No Roses For Harry

I just discovered my darling puppy chewing on a small semicircle of unidentifiable plastic (the other half of the circle has been swallowed). Is this dangerous? He's my first puppy and I never know what I should do when he does stuff like this. Will he "pass" it? Must I look?

small compared to his innards or small compared to yr kitchen table?

it will probably be ok

It was about the size of a lifesaver (what bitter irony if this had turned out badly).

He is currently snoozing on a soft pillow. I wish you could all see him: he is such a bad, good boy. When he wakes up I shall ply him with treats.

Then I will dangle him over a balcony, endangering him further.

Then I will post again, expressing remorse. I will say I made 'a terrible mistake'.

b-but it wouldn't endanger a puppy, you can drop them four floors w/o risk, cz of the ratio of volume to surface area

please please don't try to verify this

Mark S is very, very wrong.

I know.

It's so small that I think it should be fine but blockages can happen so I'd discourage him from eating plastic if possible in future (bones can be bad for this too). I wouldn't bother looking (ew), just if he stops eating and starts looking sorry for himself then get him to a vet.

But I am not a vet and indeed I go a strange shade of green at the mere mention of innards and I have never owned a dog so my advice is gleaned solely from *mumbles embarrassedly* watching the likes of Rolf's Animal Hospital. Somebody give me a job and a room near a pub so I have better things to do on my weekday evenings! Oh, and somebody who knows more - anything - about dogs and digestive tracts to thread too.

Fear not, kind isadora. I am far more likely to peel him a grape than dangle him off a balcony.

mark s, thank-you very much for the physics lesson, even though it apparently might be wrong.

estela, Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it probably is wrong

i wz thinking of diatoms

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

if yr diatom swallows a lifesaver-sized piece of plastic yr in trouble

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Now I'm frite.

estela, Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

a diatom

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

call the vet and ask, you don't have to take him up yet

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 21 November 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That diatom looks like some kind of mysterious seed pod crossed with a virus and nothing at all like my puppy, so no mix-ups are anticipated (unless Mr Magoo comes around for afternoon tea, which he never has yet).

This physic lesson keeps getting better and better.

estela, Thursday, 21 November 2002 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I just called the vet and I'm taking him in. I fear there will be no treats given but rather an emetic, poor puppy.

estela, Thursday, 21 November 2002 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Estela..first of all, hi..

second of all..how big is this puppy?? Anything dime sized will most likely pass, unless it's a weensy Chihuahua..anything that could possibly exPAND in the intestine is not good..we had a poodle eat peat moss once, and had to take her in. Had a Golden Retriever eat an entire Hefty garbage bag, and had to literally pull pieces...uh...assist..you know what I mean..help extract said pieces of bag during elimination sessions.

Things to remember, unless it's a very small puppy, regular poop is bigger than dime sized, and gets passed just fine. Yes, you'll have to look.

Hi Cynthia

I've taken him into the surgery and they've given him a shot to make him throw up. They're going to keep him for a few hours. The vet was very serious about it and now I have diatomic remorse.

estela, Thursday, 21 November 2002 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, poor baby dog and poor you!! We've had dozens of dogs in the past, many of whom have eaten things they never should have, and we never lost one..I'm sure he'll be alright, sweetie.

Could you possibly post and let me know if the little guy ejects anything useful from any orifice, so I can sleep tonight?

It's a mother thing...

Cynthia
