For example:

turkey nap
eating too much and having to unbutton yr pants
horrible family meltdowns over the gravy boat
leftovers (which are not good in their second life and which are better?)

I'm looking for more universal experiences, but feel free to share any funny stories you may have.

football (American)
McDonald's for lunch (since it's the only thing open)
the only time I ever eat stuffing

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

and I should say 'watching' football on TV

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The Macy's Parade, which about ten minutes into watching I ask myself why. Its basically turned into a 2 hour commercial.

Dave Beckhouse (Dave Beckhouse), Thursday, 21 November 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

we spend it at different relatives' houses, but i remember my dad's side best:

little kids running around and parents trying to subdue them for dinner
everyone screaming for apple pie seconds

you know i don't even remember what we usually talk about at the table. it's nice though to have everyone there.

Mingled charcoal smoke and turkey grease (my aunt and uncle cook the bird on the grill)
Unserious spats on vegetarianism (my sister) versus carnivorism (me)
Key lime pie (I am probably the only member of my extended family who doesn't like it)

I read the header as "(sorry Yanks)" and the lead-in still worked, bitterly painting a portrait of American gluttony, sloth and dysfunctionality!

bitterly painting a portrait of American gluttony, sloth and dysfunctionality!

Not inaccurate.

The one time of year I'll actually watch a Detroit Lions game.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 21 November 2002 04:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Er, why? Even if I were inclined to like football, watching the Lions probably isn't the way to go.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 21 November 2002 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps it is a form of cleansing torture for him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 November 2002 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

JEEZUS - are you people even American?!!! (I know Ned lives in California but still... :^P ) The Lions and the Cowboys always play on Thanksgiving, you're stuck with your family, meaning after twenty minutes you (and the rest of your family) are desperate for a diversion from having to talk to your family, hence you watch the Lions. Plus, for a good stretch there they had Barry Sanders, the greatest player to play until Michael Vick (aka "Barry Sanders with an arm") so there was more than a sick thrill to be had. Plus this year we get to figure out who the 'coward' is.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 21 November 2002 07:22 (twenty-three years ago)

the "kids" table

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 21 November 2002 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rah! And yeah, why those two teams anyway?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 November 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

what's fuunny (or not) is that growing up in Michigan I could never watch the Lions on thanksgiving because the games were BLACKED OUT.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlie Browns thanksgiving special which is on tonight by the way! And getting drunk the night before at a bar in town.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I got into a massive row with my father over Patch Adams one Thanksgiving.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope you took the anti-Adams side.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Brother-in-law's epic dinner table prayers. "The light [of the gospel] has almost gone out in Europe. . ." This is partly why I stopped celebrating Thanksgiving.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlie Browns thanksgiving special which is on tonight by the way!

Rah! A must-watch.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I DID take the anti-Adams side. The funny thing is that neither myself nor my father had actually seen Patch Adams by that point, and it was a screaming match that resulted in me storming off calling him a motherfucker, and then my mom hid in the garage. 2 years later, he finally saw Patch Adams and apologized to me. "It really WAS bad!"

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 21 November 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard Chris V is using Patch Adams to quit smoking.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 21 November 2002 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

My first Thanksgiving = me, my brother and my mum (my father absent on some business trip, as usual) not knowing what the hell to make of this strange foreign holiday, so off we went to the movies. We had to go to three movie theatres to find one that was open, and when we did, we were the only people in it. Yay for being able to put your feet up on the seats! And then my mother did doughnuts in the carpark. It was great.

kate, Thursday, 21 November 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I admit to happy memories from the distant past. The kids table, yes.

Have some more mashed potatoes.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 21 November 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanksgiving...

Eating entirely too much (and I don't even eat any of the meat).

Hearing my dad and his brothers argue about politics and sometimes, if we're lucky, religion.

Having to sit at the kid's table even though I'm 25.

Pies Pies Pies. Everyone contributes lots of pies. We each get to pick which kind we'd like and whether we'd like it a la mode or with whipped cream or both and everybody gets seconds and thirds. I like to mix it up - at least one slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream and one berry pie with ice cream. Served with coffee of course.

Sweet potato casserole.

Oh! I'll miss all the food this year since I'll be on my trip, but PARIS... I mean, COME ON!
