electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 21 November 2002 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah it's the very best juice there is. You should see if yr dairies sell it or something, it's way common here

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 21 November 2002 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Bloody Marys are good, though I've only ever had two

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 21 November 2002 04:07 (twenty-three years ago)

and you can mix it with vodka, it just gets better

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Thursday, 21 November 2002 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

my stepmom used to make this concoction of half tomato juice, half beer

ron (ron), Thursday, 21 November 2002 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

the tomato juice and beer combination sounds meh (see, even I'm using my initials as a pejorative term now). Bloody Marys are, however, bloody grate.

Tomato juice is wonderful, but I hate washing up the glass afterwards. I think one of the constituent parts of tomato juice must be glue.

C J (C J), Thursday, 21 November 2002 09:48 (twenty-three years ago)

it's the devil's own seed. bleeurrgh.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 21 November 2002 10:01 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pilgrim Fathers thought the same.

  • locally, the phenomenon of drizzling tomato juice into a glass of draught beer so it settles nebulously at the bottom is called "uglies". the beer is then downed in one gulp.
  • i have been drinking v8 juice (tomato based juice with seven other pureed vegetables in it) every morning this week. it's a sipping kind of juice, but very lovely in the morning. prior to this week i hadn't had v8 in about ten to fifteen years.
  • like many ilx'ers, i often find myself with a terrible hangover, but still wind up in the pub at five or six o'clock anyway. the waitress could see i was in some distress and gave me a bloody mary, claiming it would soothe my hangover and get me drunk at the same time. it was lovely -- and it was served with a couple of pickled green beans for garnish.

  • Bullet 3 does indeed sound lovely. Bullets 1 & 2 do not.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 21 November 2002 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Bloody Mary made with Zubrowka (or however you spell it, bison grass, you know the stuff) is excellent.

And don't forget, five Bloody Marys = your five portions of fruit/veg for the day!

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 21 November 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Just Make sure your getting Tomato and Not Calmato=Clam + Tomato Juice Yuk!! I had a wonderfull Bloody Mary in NYC a lime twist..

    brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

A shot of dry red wine in a bloody mary is very good.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 21 November 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay! Nice to see some T-juice lovers on ILE! In my experience, all it ever gets is a bad rep (except amongst music-lovers I tend to find, spookily). Bloody Mary's are ace but I can never make them like they do in the bars.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 21 November 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Mens Health magazines always recommend a V8 or Bloody Mary as the best hangover remedy.

David Gunnip, Friday, 22 November 2002 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i REALLY love those mini-tomatos. tomato juice? nevah drink the schtuff. not even mixed with wodka.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 22 November 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

For some reason, drinking a Bloody Mary gives me a don't-mess-with-this-bitch type of confidence, in the same way as stilettos and red nail varnish. It did the trick at my school reunion.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 22 November 2002 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apple juice and orange juice are better.

    man, Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:48 (twenty-three years ago)

    five years pass...

apple juice always grossed me out! tomato juice on the plane is very perfect, often. with a TWIST OF LIME

Surmounter, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

and pretzels i kind of want to be on a plane now. but i don't want to be at the airport.

Surmounter, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

I always drink tomato juice on the plane, literally never any other time. Why is this?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

    i'm telling you it's a thing

Surmounter, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

one explanation: it's a little more substantive than other drinx

Surmounter, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

    I always have ginger ale.

Tomato juice is food of the gods, obv.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

Toast, tomato juice, one egg, coffee: perfect breakfast.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

used to hate tomato juice until i made myself start liking bloody marys

why do you speak such truth?

Surmounter, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

I like a bloody mary with tequila instead of vodka (not a fan of the clear likkers); I believe this is a bloody maria.

quincie, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

have become addicted to it as of late

dell, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

A bloody mary with gin is very good, too.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 7 August 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

Good if spicy/salty. On a plane recently I was offered "spicy tomato juice" in addition to regular, and when I asked for it I received a can of Bloody Mary mix. (It was tiny, relatively delicious, and contained about 50% of the daily allowance of sodium.)

nabisco, Thursday, 7 August 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

Quality is also highly dependent on temperature, more than almost any drink I can think of

nabisco, Thursday, 7 August 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

SPICY is like i almost can't take it, that's how good

Surmounter, Thursday, 7 August 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

and yes i need me some cold tomato juice

Surmounter, Thursday, 7 August 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

    I always have ginger ale.

On planes, me too! I really can't think why.

I am considering moving to New Orleans and a friend down there keeps telling me about this awesome tomato juice I'm gonna have to try when I get there.

Still, all these theories don’t explain how ginger ale and tomato juice came to be served on airplanes in the first place. That's what brings us to the definitive “civilized gentlemen" theory.
This theory holds that in-flight culture is a relic of the 1950s, when commercial air travel came into its own. While everything on the ground has changed, those cabins of compressed air have also compressed time, hearkening back to an era when most of the people who flew were white, wealthy and male. And so these gentlemen, who might be found frequenting places like the Yale Club, brought the trappings of their clubby life aboard with them. The staples of smoky, wood-paneled bars became the staples of smoky, plastic-paneled airplanes.
That would include mixers like tonic and ginger ale. Drinks like the Bloody Mary, or its virgin cousin, tomato juice. And, of course, peanuts.

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 7 August 2008 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

I always drink Bloody Mary Mix on airplanes. If not, ginger ale, but I always drink ginger ale. For those keeping score:

    Seagrams>>>>>>>Schweppes>>Canada Dry

    Seagrams is the most dry.

dan selzer, Thursday, 7 August 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

caesers are killer. drink more clam!

rent, Thursday, 7 August 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

I would consider that more "self-evident" than a "theory," wanko -- it's been a staple forever to treat air travel as a sort of club experience; and they still make loads of money off of pay drinks on long flights, and need the mixers; though I'd suggest the ginger ale presence these days probably also doubles as a stomach-soother for anyone upset by travel

nabisco, Thursday, 7 August 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

    two years pass...

have become addicted to it as of late
