I will be a GTA this year come september. Today i got the couse i will teach. I am teaching Art Histroy 142. A survey course for the last 500 years. Aside form all the problems i have with a survey course i hate the idea since it is viewed as the course engineers use to get thier art requirement.

So any tips, any ways to make sure these Gearheads have to work ?

That sort of thing !

Ha! Good luck. I had the choice between intro to philosophy, logic, and something else for my assistantship this fall. I picked the logic because it's the most like teaching a math class, which I've already done, and there will be homework problems. Homework problems are good. They have right answers. This helps immensely with grading.

Make the gearheads visit a museum (not too hard in NYC), assign extra articles that go against the grain of the typical art history canon. Or just make them read Barthes and Geertz for 'in-class discussion'. Completed my art history degree last August--I know the score.

You could inspire them by becoming a figure of mockery, posing as the 'groooovy' TA with helmet hair, sideburns and ribbed turtleneck (think Dick Shawn in "The Producers"), and talking about how knowing art helps the squares pull. Or would that be a pose? And is trying to be a hip teacher a mistake of such painful consequence that only being a tyrant or a buffoon is the antidote?

give them an intro into art porn - send them on assignments to sex shops etc.

I think I'm in love.

I mostly taught required composition courses, so I'd be useless given yer particular requirements, Anthony. But as a general motivator, threaten to fail at least half the class and make sure you grade appropriately for the first major test. That'll wake 'em up.

Let's run away together.
