As a kid the show I always dreamt of being on was Nick Arcade. I thought I'd be so good at it. I always felt bad for the contestants though since that VR/green screen final challenge never seemed to work right. The kids would lose out on a trip to Universal Studios because it glitched. Anyway, Neil Cicierega's Computer Fighters movie has a pretty good reproduction of what it was like:

I remember the Double Dares, Finders Keepers, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Remote Control, Lip Service, Singled Out, and Idiot Savants. Double Dare is the most obvious classic and memorable of the Nick shows. I've probably watched that the most out of all of these. I'd imagine Singled Out must have been the most popular from MTV?

I'm going to throw in my vote for Lip Service though. I probably only saw a few episodes of that, but it was a pretty fun lip-sync show.

Remote Control is the right answer, but voting Finders Keepers for indulging the fantasy of tearing rooms fucking apart

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Friday, 19 May 2023 13:25 (two years ago)

wait a second what about MTV's Next? or did that come on a bit too late? I remember watching it in middle school, so it must've been on around 2000-2002 or so. looking at clips of it on YouTube it's way funnier and more ridiculous than I remember, just pure brilliance

loved a whole lot of these. double dare and hidden temple seemed like the most fun. figure it out was great too, when they would guess absurd hidden "talents." one kid had the world's longest rattail ponytail

voted Nick Arcade because it was one of those things you knew was ground-breaking at the time and would look hilariously antiquated later on.

also Phil Moore was a delightfully goofy host.

I auditioned for Legend of the Hidden Temple, but failed the physical parts of it. at least 3 of my 8th grade classmates were on either that or Guts in middle school.

I was a faithful Remote Control watcher. I especially loved the Colin Quinn karaoke segments where you had to guess what he was tunelessly bellowing.

it's forever lodged in my brain that the before & after category on Idiot Savants was called Harry S. Truman Capote

soup of magpies (geoffreyess), Friday, 19 May 2023 16:20 (two years ago)

The Blame Game was a blight on humanity. basically a game where a recently broken up couple campaigned for the audience determine who was at fault for the breakup, and it included several rounds of activities, including singing a karaoke song related to the breakup. also each candidate would have a 'lawyer' to argue their side.

it seemed phony as hell and probably was but it also tried way too hard to be funny

I've never been clear on Nickelodeon's slime motif -- did they just appropriate it from YCDTV and decree 80% of shows must have slime or was it the other way around?

Pretty sure the slime originated with YCDTOT
