I had a sitcom on NBC in the summer of '77 that wasn't renewed, so yes.

Real answer, no. Definitely try to watch my words a more carefully than I did even five years ago.

People have called me an asshole, and lots of other things, as a consequence of opinions I have expressed, here and elsewhere. (My current username was a gift from Brad, and probably deserved.) But to me "cancelled" means losing a job or a book contract or something real-worldish like that, so no.

While both canceled{/b] and [b]cancelled are acceptable for the past tense of cancel, the version with one L is more common in American English, while the version with two L's is more common in British English.

I'm a relative newcomer here, I've seen a few people get shouted down, often though maybe not always deservedly, and there seems to be a healthy number of (usually temporary) bans. Not sure any of that counts as "cancellation."

Feel like there was a moment in 6th grade where I went through something similar to Harriet the Spy, where all of a sudden I was untouchable and bullied and not exactly sure why

It didn't last terribly long, and I'm not scarred by it, but I remember feeling like a pile of dogshit and not knowing what I did wrong... but that might be more Lord of the Flies shit than actual cancellation

I recently got cancelled by a dental practise. Turned up for an appointment a day late and the usually friendly receptionist was looking at me with an embarrassed to be making eye contact with a non-person look, so I knew I'd fucked up before she spoke. This was the 2nd appointment you've missed this year, you low value non-paying NHS scum, goodbye.

not so much HERE per se, but there are large pockets of internet where you can be fairly eviscerated and de-platformed for complete nonsense. i.e. YA Twitter.

that and pile-ons don't always have social justice in mind. some people just enjoy finding an excuse to eviscerate someone and look for the next one to pop up.

that being said, most cancellations do happen for a reason.

the manwich horror (Neanderthal), Friday, 2 June 2023 16:45 (two years ago)

other thing is the only people cancellation ever works on = everyday people, like a struggling author, low-visibility musicians, Deacons at churches. celebrities and businesses usually wind up stronger than they were before. which isn't to say they shouldn't be 'cancelled' anyway because absolutely call those fuckers out but they never see any real consequences.

ryan adams seems to have been somewhat successfully cancelled (good, he's a true POS) but at the same time he had peaked twenty years ago so there wasn't much left to cancel.

i think it does ding celebs to an extent, even someone like aziz ansari is probably still dealing with the fallout of his possibly misguided cancellation in terms of how his career momentum just completely stalled.

the current obsession with true crime content

"current" is a fallacy here imo

Ɓr an broc a mhic (darraghmac), Monday, 24 July 2023 19:17 (two years ago)

think it's more that true crime reporting used to be more the domain of people with some semblance of investigating skills, whereas now any idiot with an internet connection can start a True Crime podcast and spread unfounded theories.

(obviously some of this happened in the olden days too, but it took longer for shit to spread back then and to reach large audiences)

of course, otoh, urban legends and shit hung around a lot longer decades ago because fact-checking and debunking wasn't a real time activity and often never gained much visibility in the general public.

how many people told you that Marilyn Manson was Paul from Wonder Years in the 90s?

linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Monday, 24 July 2023 19:24 (two years ago)

I would solve these problems by feeding the true crime podcasters to the serial killers. Win-win.

omar little, Monday, 24 July 2023 19:26 (two years ago)

I guess some fact-checking and debunking works but it doesn't stick with 90% of people and most of us just passively absorb information throughout the day

mh, Monday, 24 July 2023 19:26 (two years ago)

There's also a question of media coverage, and whether that plays a role in subconsciously amplifying the role serial killers have, and conversely making us somewhat inured to so called "mundane murders"

I am guessing that the "us" in this statement refers to people who tend to be more removed from "mundane murders"? I mean, I grew up in a small town where nothing really happened, and people were very worried about child abduction and murder by serial killers. The whole Polly Klaas thing that led to the 3 strikes laws that led to the growth of the carceral state here. Where I live now, we have several "mundane murders" a week, and I really stopped giving a fuck about serial killers and that kind of true crime stuff tbh.

sarahell, Tuesday, 25 July 2023 19:17 (two years ago)

Another example of a person’s life being dramatically fucked up and thrown into disarray because they dare to stand up for the truth and what’s right— and more evidence that it is usually the fascists doing the cancelling.

Could be, to an extent at least. If I live somewhere and there are 13 murders within a timeframe and its on tv and it all looks like and ends up being by the same person I can see that being anxiety inducing

But if the 13 murders are all by different people and none of them make the news because they’re all boring, is that better? For me thats worse.

On the other hand perhaps the former IS more shocking because it jolts people who might otherwise feel comfortable and safe. Something about it being unexpected.

linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 15:20 (two years ago)

well yes, it is worse, because someone or some authority has determined that these are "boring" murders ... I doubt the friends & families & neighbors are particularly bored?

sarahell, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 15:31 (two years ago)

but the people in power who determine what gets news coverage (and how it gets covered) ... generally are more shocked by murders of affluent white people (and/or their children) ... to bring it back to the thread topic of social justice and "deplatforming"

sarahell, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 15:37 (two years ago)

i think serial murderers have a sort of baroque, dare i say "goth" appeal that speaks to the absolute worst aspects of humanity, in the sense when one is active it does really seem like a monster has crawled from an abyss. i don't want to normalize other types of murder, i just think unfortunately americans regard most other murders to be not shocking because they're so commonplace. it goes hand in hand with how a vast segment of the population, enough to influence the policies that are helping to destroy the country, are willing to accept violence if it means more freedom.

Gunfire killed a man in Oakland on Monday night, police said.

The shooting occurred just before 11:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of East Eighth Street near 10th Avenue.

Dispatchers were told of a shooting and officers responded and located the victim there, according to police.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said. The man's name is not being released yet by police.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Police Department's homicide unit at (510) 238-3821 or its tip line at (510) 238-7950.

staggering amount of press coverage

I remember not long after I moved to Oakland I was looking at a crime map and there had been 5 murders at one location and I couldn’t find a single news article about it.

just1n3, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 22:21 (two years ago)

part of this is that there is barely any local news around here. there's the chronicle, which I do not buy (but read online while it was cheap); people instead look at sfgate which has gotten increasingly more overrun with 'content' stories and non-news stuff. the east bay barely has a newspaper. Oaklandside / cityside have an editorial policy to not cover very much crime.

treeship., Wednesday, 29 May 2024 15:14 (one year ago)

on a serious note, there's a local cookery bakery at Disney Springs that's been a crowd favorite for years, but last week or so, a cryptic Instagram account began making accusations of employee mistreatment, and started making demands. of course, the owner of the bakery responded to indicate the allegations were false, about as clumsily as owners often are in these cases, so now people are advocating boycotting the company, etc.

I pretty much always side with the worker in worker/employer debates, and have no reason to side with the owner in this case, plus I've never actually been to this place so 'boycotting it' isn't even a worry for me.

but where I have an issue is the lack of transparency surrounding the social media account making the claims, as well as some credibility issues. Nobody knows who is running it, or whether it's actually blessed by the employees. Obviously, the employees, who are haven't yet unionized, can't go on record with their names, but the owner of the account claims to be a current employee, whereas employees with knowledge of who runs the account have stated it's actually an ex-employee. The owner claims to have put the account together with the input of 36 other employees, and that outreach was made to all employees of the company, whereas a few employees have been interviewed as saying no such outreach was done, and that they did not give permission for this account to speak on their behalf. These were employees who were not necessarily refuting the claims made or defending the company, but didn't appreciate having a mouthpiece they didn't agree to.

The owner claimed a specific HR representative blurted out a racial slur in a meeting, only for two employees who attended the meeting to contact press and confirm that not only did this not happen, but the representative in question wasn't in that meeting. On top of that, the social media account made the tone deaf decision to compare working there to working on an 1800s plantation. after they got blowback for that, they temporarily turned off comments, and started deleting other comments.

On the other hand, many employees have taken to Reddit to post redacted paystubs and offer support for the cause. Others sought to distance themselves from it and commented that some of the claims were misleading or wrong. I'm definitely not defending the company because I know how when there's smoke there's fire, but...I have a problem with the idea that we shouldn't take a step back and consider that perhaps this account might not be the right mouthpiece for it, at least until these problems get cleared up. but suggesting that gets you accused of siding with the owners.

Obviously, anonymity does not invalidate a claim, because this is the type of thing that a powerless group of employees has to do anonymously, but other public campaigns against businesses from employees haven't had similar credibility issues that this one has, in that it's been clear who the leader is even if they're not named, employees have gone on record to the press validating the authority of the group, and confirmed their claims on social media and to the press. yeah, there are often dissenting voices, but not the outright red flags this account has.

my grandmother always said "where there's smoke, there's fire." i never was comfortable with that because people lie sometimes. at the same time, it is painful for accusers to be disbelieved and we have all seen how institutions at all levels of society have shielded the powerful from accountability.
