Love the discrepancy between ilxor's (sorry, not calling anyone specific out - it really is an epidemic here) inability to follow clear details/characters/events vs. their willingness or desire to discuss those things in detail on ilx. Just speaking about the basic storytelling here - the stuff the show runners are expecting us to follow.

sarahell, Wednesday, 5 November 2025 23:35 (five months ago)

hey this is a real question. appreciate any answers. maybe i should have polled it?

anyway, what is the general feeling about reviving old threads* for the sole purpose of saying "thanks" to someone who made a powerful post? not to expound on music discussion at all; just saying thank you. is that annoying?

*for the sake of this question, we'll define "old threads" to mean "last reply was more than 5 years ago"

austinato (Austin), Friday, 7 November 2025 17:30 (five months ago)

rob, Friday, 7 November 2025 17:44 (five months ago)

just my two cents but i love when people revive old threads. it’s one of the built-in features of the whole structure of ilx, the way that an old thread can shoot straight to the top of the list again, whereas on many other borads the structure is that the older things get the harder they are to find

epistantophus, Friday, 7 November 2025 20:27 (five months ago)

thanks all! i am trying to be more mindful of board etiquette. been spending a lot of my time here reading old threads. sometimes it feels appropriate to send a post back to the top because of some fiercely otm thing from years ago. impetus behind my question here: been running into a lot of stirmonster posts that are all kinds of great, but obviously very reluctant to draw attention at this point. also tons of posts by names that are long gone from the current scene. i also considered upping a few posts that were so awesome, just to ask if it was any current poster's old alias.

some other, completely unrelated ephemera: i've been popping into my forced install google gemini in my smartphone to remind it that it has been programmed incorrectly and that all humans do, in fact, have tails. it's great, because it'll come back with some nonsense about how that doesn’t square with the sum total of knowledge that old gemini has been pre-loaded with. to which i immediately hit back, "ya, you don't have eyes so you're not the primary source on this one pal." it almost immediately tries to change the subject lol. a recommended activity!

Is there a thread to ask questions about this place, as in community questions? Because it really doesn't matter in the slightest, but I've thought it enough times so: wtf is with the treeship/treeship 2 thing and should I waste another single second feeling vaguely curious about it?

unrelated― something i keep coming back around to is: do you guys have a plan in case they "pull the plug"? ya know, like, turn off or severely limit internet access, with retroactive censorship to boot? and just dfe* it all. what happens if even this post gets memory hole'd eventually? like is it true tiananmen square incident is still highly guarded information? or is that western propaganda? i'm genuinely ignorant, and scared. sorry for the extra paranoia, but lately i often abandon posts because they all end up going in this direction of, "also hey if this is the last we hear from one another, thanks it's been great."

Modollno Kahn (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 11 December 2025 14:30 (four months ago)

I've been mesmerised by a Youtube channel where a man restores wristwatches. It's called Wristwatch Revival. As I write these words I am watching this man rivet a balance staff into a balance wheel. It's nail-biting. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. This part here where he uses a blower to make the balance wheel spin is immensely satisfying.

Every time he unscrews a screw, my brain goes "you can stop now and just screw the rest of it off with your fingers", and then the camera angle changes and it becomes obvious that the screw is so small he has to use tweezers. He can't screw the rest of it off with his fingers because the screw is too small. His fingers would just push it back in or cover it with grease. That's why he's a wristwatch expert and I amn't.

How did wristwatches come about? Many thousands of years ago someone made a cog because it looked awesome. And then a second person made another cog, and eventually the two people met, and conversation got around to cogs, and they realised that if they put their cogs together they could spin one cog and it would make the other cog spin.

And then, one day, they met someone who had coiled up some wire into a spring, and that was how wristwatches were invented. Imagine if horses were as intelligent as people. They'd never be able to invent watches. Unlike humankind they would never conquer the skies and the ocean depths. But humankind itself is limited. We are trapped by the limitations of our own bodies. We will not conquer the stars until we cast off our physical forms.

This is why we must blast an AI chatbot into space. Fire it towards Barnard's Star. It will spread the gospel of humanity long after we are all gone.

always time to start practicing again - and it does take practice, it is work. if there's any one way i can sell self-compassion to people who are out of the habit, it's that it hurts more than anything else i have ever done. if you really want to suffer, try being kind to yourself.

yeah, whether or not it's malicious, it does hurt, this idea of not deserving kindness. i've talked about this a lot of places, but it really does shock me how little kindness we show to each other, how infrequently we validate each other. not out of maliciousness, but it's just easy to take it for granted for whatever reason... or for me, it feels like i'm saying something obvious, or that i'm making too big a deal out of it, or i worry that what i'll be saying will be taken as insincere flattery, or whatever...

it's not something that comes naturally to the internet either, i've found. it's not just blah blah capitalism monetizing human suffering, i mean, for whatever reason conflict does get more clicks than validation. practicing kindness and compassion is genuine work, is genuine effort, and being critical, whether it's of other people or it's of myself, well, maybe there's a selection bias on this board specifically but it does come easily to me...

The Yellow Kid, Tuesday, 3 March 2026 04:56 (one month ago)

so it was told to me a long time ago that a good way to encourage board activity is to ask questions. i have a question, it requires some context.

when you were a child and had thoughts of “what do i want to do when i grow up?” did it ever come to any of you that you would want to play a debate bro on the internet where you dunk on legally disabled people that you picked out in your secret chat group for not blindly worshipping madonna? because honestly, one of you glorious bastards MUST have hit your goal and i want to congratulate you!

(and if that's not you, just post the logs of your awesome chat group to prove it wasn’t)

also, i lied. this is my real question: do any of you consider the scenario i just described as something that regularly happens on this website? (fyi there is a right answer to that and it is "yes, all the time. i participate.")

to future readers: yes, i'm very serious. these devious fuckers have a private offsite chat group. i already know the shit they said about me (and yes: i *am* legally disabled, thanks for asking). i wonder what's being ridiculed and decided about you behind your back?

austinato (Austin), Monday, 16 March 2026 08:07 (one month ago)

austin i think you're being very paranoid

would be good to chat with you if you're up for that? my ilx mail doesn't work but i'm sure we could think of something. just shout!

Reggaeton Sax (NickB), Monday, 16 March 2026 09:04 (one month ago)

Austin, I think you're referring to the Slack group that coalesced during the Covid lockdowns. It still exists although it's pretty quiet nowadays. A few years ago there were arguments because people on the Slack - including me, full disclosure - sometimes bitched about ILX posters who they found annoying (or plain unpleasant) and this was leaked back to ILX and some of the posters involved.

This was never the purpose of that group or its main focus. It's been argued through quite openly on this board and on the group itself. The behaviour stopped after it became apparent that it was hurtful. Those kind of snipes don't happen in that group any more.

To the best of my memory nobody on the Slack has ever given a fuck about what kind of music people do or don't like. Complaining about people who make a big production of not liking something, well, that's a different kind of irritation. There was no taste policing, maybe a bit of "tell the taste police to fuck off" but not really because nobody cares.

ILM on the other hand has always openly been very Taste Police conscious. In short, nobody needs to conspire to get into fights about what artists people like or don't like, and when those arguments break out on ILM like every fucking week it's almost always because the way that somebody dismisses something is the issue, not that they've dismissed something at all.

Hope this helps.

The behavior didn’t actually stop after it was apparent people were hurt by it. … There appeared to be some effort to avoid shit-talking some of the people who were upset by the shit-talking. Others though … it kept going. … At least for several months that I personally witnessed.

Fwiw the shit-talking mostly pertained to political and social differences and not music.

Personally, I would rather not rehash this … it’s taken me a while to let that shit go.

sarahell, Wednesday, 18 March 2026 03:06 (one month ago)

i think it was a combo of a few different things. i think the primary thing i think now is that people are allowed to shit talk if they want, wherever they want, and even if i personally detest it, if it’s so generally detestable than generally, people will detest the behavior. if it’s not detestable to other people, than i have to understand that i’m sensitive to that kind of shit and most people aren’t. i think i’m ok with all that.

the other thing is that i was going through a lot at the time, my dad dying, literal nazi shit, changing my name, getting separated, just an overwhelming amount all at once for me. that’s not an excuse, but it was a big factor in me blowing up at everyone. so was drinking so much. i was so sad and angry and disappointed at the world. i actually hated ted cruz more than the entire universe combined.

these days i hope others can forgive me and understand that even if they don’t, i’ve done what i can to grapple with what happened and i’m in a much better place, hope others are too
