I see that the Gavin Bryars track The Sinking of the Titanic was mentioned, The mention of the ausio system continually restarting the intro tape playing Celine Dion had had me thinking of that already. I think the Bryars track is based around the idea of the band on the ship playing Nearer My God To Thee as the situation became progressively worse. So pictured somebody doing something similar with the Celine Dion tune. Event may just become a footnote of a footnote though.

Good question. I can't pretend to understand precisely what that is, but the company has "salvor-in-possession rights" to the wreck. I suppose it means they can pick up stuff if they promise to take appropriate care of it. See https://www.noaa.gov/gc-international-section/rms-titanic-international-agreement(Wich refers to court cases with cool names like "R.M.S. TITANIC, INC. v. The WRECKED AND ABANDONED VESSEL, Its Engines, Tackle, Apparel, Appurtenances, Cargo, etc.").
― Nabozo, Sunday, 25 June 2023 13:24 (one year ago)
My understanding is that if insurance money was paid out, the insurance company owns it.
― nickn, Monday, 26 June 2023 03:18 (one year ago)
the company that owns the rights to the shipwreck
this phrase is so much, wow
maritime laws regarding shipwrecks and salvage rights have been developing for many centuries and ownership of salvage rights is as much a form of property as, say, title to land or copyright.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 26 June 2023 03:39 (one year ago)
Doesn't the idea of insurance come from shipping. Which could suggest that once goods had been paid out for a check that they had actually met the fate described would follow. & payment meted out meaning some agency over what had been paid for.Or something along those lines. Trying to find a way of saying insurance company or other sponsor who has paid for lost goods thereafter holding ownership over goods paid for which would make some kind of sense. Goods or the vehicle containing them which may be a slightly different thing but is still an insured variable.
Or does totally written off just mean totally written off, which would seem contrary to this but would save paperwork.
― Stevo, Monday, 26 June 2023 10:29 (one year ago)
presumably salvage rights must tie in with ownership rights.

the pressure from the implosion will have made the oxygen ignite, they will have been instantly disintegrated rather than crushed, is how I understand it
A former nuclear submarine officer posted this several years ago on Quora:
"When a submarine hull collapses, it moves inward at about 1,500 miles per hour - that’s 2,200 feet per second. A modern nuclear submarine’s hull radius is about 20 feet. So the time required for complete collapse is 20 / 2,200 seconds = about 1 millisecond.
"A human brain responds instinctually to stimulus at about 25 milliseconds. Human rational response (sense→reason→act) is at best 150 milliseconds.
"The air inside a sub has a fairly high concentration of hydrocarbon vapors. When the hull collapses it behaves like a very large piston on a very large Diesel engine. The air auto-ignites and an explosion follows the initial rapid implosion. Large blobs of fat (that would be humans) incinerate and are turned to ash and dust quicker than you can blink your eye.
"Sounds gruesome but as a submariner I always wished for a quick hull-collapse death over a lengthy one like some of the crew on Kursk endured."
Not sure if it's applicable to the Titan, but he adds "There are several sources of hydrocarbons inside a sub. Hydraulic oil, diesel oil from the auxiliary Diesel engine, kitchen oils, grease, rubber, plastics, etc. This stuff sublimes to make its way into the sub’s atmosphere. It permeates the crew’s clothing."
― birdistheword, Wednesday, 5 July 2023 18:51 (one year ago)
just read a quote from an engineer hypothesising that a likely end scenario for the sub and the passengers would be first a major power failure, which would mean no propulsion/no buoyancy any more. I know that chump said there were multiple safety systems... yadda yadda ... about as likely to be functional as any other part of the sub. So then the sub went into a rapid uncontrolled plunge to the bottom in total darkness, with all passengers awkwardly cramped together in the front of the sub as it goes nose down into oblivion. He reckons this would have lasted about for 48 seconds of absolute terror until the rapid pressure change would have been far more than the dodgy af carbon fiber hull could withstand.
I probably need to stop wasting time with bad youtubers and forget about this ridiculous sub, but I can't get it out of my head what a horror show that scenario would be.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 13 July 2023 13:19 (one year ago)
still can't get over the "we have an early warning system" which really gave them like ten seconds to react
― linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Thursday, 13 July 2023 13:21 (one year ago)
like early warning systems are supposed to detect faults when they're relatively minor and before they become catastrophic, not to tell you "lol this whole thing is gonna blow, thought we'd let you know" when you have little reaction time to fix it

― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 13 July 2023 13:26 (one year ago)
another thing is some are commenting that the titanium rings of the sub that have been recovered - they are totally clean with no carbon fiber fragments still stuck to them. And from the Oceangate videos of them glueing the rings to the hull it was all done wrong. This is supposed to be done in a sterile temperature controlled environment. In the vid you see a guy running one of his bare hands over it, polishing it with a filthy looking window-cleaners rag with the other, just before the adhesive is applied!

wow
― linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Thursday, 13 July 2023 13:51 (one year ago)
not sure the propulsion was linked to the buoyancy: the submersible was designed to be naturally buoyant thanks to the carbon fibre* -- what took it down was heavy ballast plus the landing frame and what brought it back up was dropping the ballast (which was a bunch of old pipes and bars resting on a ledge, jettisoned i believe by the crew rocking the craft from within until everything slid off and into the deep)
propulsion could speed the dive and the surfacing but -- for safety! -- it wasn't needed
*and presumably also the air it contained until it didn't
