it is true!

i've read the book so i sort of know what's going on

only seen the first one so far and it was nice what they did with the credits but tim robbins is creepy enough, you needn't telegraph it

rashida jones deserves an award for Utterly Dominating One Episode

mookieproof, Monday, 10 July 2023 04:26 (two years ago)

also pete postlethwaite's son is there!

mookieproof, Monday, 10 July 2023 04:36 (two years ago)

Thought the biggest flaw was falling victim to Prestige TVitis and making it a 10-hour movie, the first 2/3 dragged pretty hard and hit the same points (our protagonist is grieving, something is up with this silo business y'all) over and over without forward momentum.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 10 July 2023 05:36 (two years ago)

yeh agree i liked it overall but couldve easily been 6-8 episodes

nobody respects the chair (Spottie), Monday, 10 July 2023 05:38 (two years ago)

at the end of e01 the cops were like 'it took us a whole day to get down here' which was not appropriately sold and possibly cannot be

mookieproof, Monday, 10 July 2023 05:55 (two years ago)

You climb 140 flights of stairs in a day!

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 10 July 2023 05:58 (two years ago)

I know The Pact Forbids It and all but every scene set on the center stairwell I was thinking "some chains and pulleys would be awfully useful here."

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 10 July 2023 06:00 (two years ago)

anyway mostly relating to this because i absolutely should want to go outside . . . but i don't

mookieproof, Monday, 10 July 2023 06:02 (two years ago)

they had chutes for freedom day! but yet

mookieproof, Monday, 10 July 2023 06:03 (two years ago)

Started the show blind (besides hearing some praise), two episodes in. Seems solid if a little too TV-y so far. My biggest concern is that like a lot of loosely similar shows it will keep answering questions with more questions to sustain or stretch the story until there are so many questions there can't be any good answers. (And that's not even taking into account the perpetual threat of cancellation.)

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 July 2023 21:06 (two years ago)

You climb 140 flights of stairs in a day!

it would be exhausting for sure but even with lotss of rest stops it would not take a day, especially going down.

i also watched this blind and did enjoy it and would watch more but there are so many plot holes, or at least major plot lines that seem non-sensical.

stirmonster, Saturday, 22 July 2023 21:40 (two years ago)

If mook has deemed this show thread-worthy I guess I should watch it

calstars, Saturday, 22 July 2023 21:56 (two years ago)

lol i cannot actually recommend that logic

mookieproof, Saturday, 22 July 2023 23:42 (two years ago)

this show was consistently ok and I’ll watch S2 but I’m not sure I’d recommend it to anyone

craziest thing was why there was no keep-left system like in every other civilisation where lots of people go up and down stairs - does the Pact prescribe that people keep running into each other

TWELVE Michelob stars?!? (seandalai), Saturday, 22 July 2023 23:58 (two years ago)

I have 4 1/2 seasons of Miami vice on deck so don’t hold your breath lol

calstars, Sunday, 23 July 2023 00:04 (two years ago)

I just finished episode 3. I'd say it's a hair better than consistently OK, at least so far, but that may be why the little ways it falls short stick out a bit more than they otherwise might have, imo. But at its best it kind of captures "Battlestar Galactica" vibes.

I do suspect something is up with this silo, y'all.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 23 July 2023 00:36 (two years ago)

There was! It was specifically called out in one ep by someone - Billings maybe? - and someone was told off for not keeping right or left or whichever it was.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 23 July 2023 00:37 (two years ago)

I will also rep for the show being enjoyable and it had some moments of great tension/suspense, but if you're sharp you'll work out the plot reasonably early on, and towards the end it started to be a slog, and def needs a Season 2 (I ended up reading the novel plots and yeah this only covered one book).

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 23 July 2023 00:40 (two years ago)

Episode 5 was the first kind of real boilerplate slog of this for me. Doesn't help that I don't find Common or Tim Robbins the least bit compelling (the latter clearly did all his scenes before he had his coffee). Then again, I find the whole neo-noir/procedural aspect of this show kind of not compelling compared to the bigger mystery of why they are all there and why/how no one knows why. I do like the idea of a society of cardio masters who all must have lungs of steel, though. So many stairs, so much walking and running ...

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 23 July 2023 17:59 (two years ago)

Speaking of which, what are the odds Common did his own wardrobe?

Wardrobe: We were thinking your character, would wear a ...
Common: I'm going to dress like Shaft.
Wardrobe: ... OK.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 23 July 2023 19:25 (two years ago)

I dropped out after about 3 episodes - something about the box on a string annoyed me; everything felt a bit linear-procedural. I also kept getting distracted by Ferguson - the rest of the cast looked authentically grubby-shabby-tired in a re-use/recycle world (special mention to Rashida) - but imo she's got too much physical glow for this to work. Shame, because I usually enjoy her.

woof, Sunday, 23 July 2023 20:37 (two years ago)

Every actor in this show seems very much like an actor acting, that's one thing I meant about it being very TV-y. Brightly lit (despite the location), line readings one at a time, kind of soapy delivery, at times very expensive looking but other times very uncanny valley cheap. Despite the imposed grit and implied lived-in-ness, it's still very artificial and stage-y. But hey, these are mostly distractions, I guess. Like Ferguson, who is working really hard to not look like Ingrid Bergman. But that's not her fault. The bigger issue is the pacing, the constant portent but lack of, I dunno, compelling drama. I'm still going to finish the season, but then I suspect I've off to wikipedia to see how the story ends.

Oh, I guess Common really likes turtlenecks.

Makes me miss Andor, whose production aesthetic had an extremely believable lived-in quality.

Seems to be perking up a bit around episode 7, escaping the gravitational pull of the season's saggy middle, even if it's gone pretty standard issue paranoid dystopia. At least it's stopped short (so far) of introducing a prophecy or some shit.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 23 July 2023 22:23 (two years ago)

if you're sharp you'll work out the plot reasonably early on

I don't know about plot, as such, but the villain is telegraphed so blatantly that I almost thought it was misdirection. And then I groaned when they did the reveal. Or should I say, "reveal," because there was no real revelation.

Also, I know these dystopian stories have to hit certain beats, but for once I wish they wouldn't lean on literally jackbooted black-uniformed fascist secret police thugs as the baddies. It just feels so lazy. Fellow Apple TV show "Severance" showed you can make mundane authoritarians plenty menacing.

Anyway, frustrating show. I finished it, and it had a good final reveal, in a predictable sort of way, but as the kids say, a lot of it was kinda mid.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 July 2023 02:16 (two years ago)

three weeks pass...

watching this liking it fine, mostly just trusting that my guy graham yost will eventually turn it into something special.

finished the first seven eps. i am enjoying ferguson's steeliness and robbins' smarm, but it might have been a misstep to start the season with two very distinctive performances and then cut them out of the show entirely.

might be getting a divorce soon because i can't stop myself from singing "in the siiiiiiii-lo" like lady gaga and/or bradley cooper every few minutes

one year passes...

probably best to choose the one (of dozens?) silo that looks most inviting? E.g. the one tunnel from (the only one with a semi-accessible hatch way, maybe?) which it appears that hundreds, or thousands, of people have fled. That one promises to be the least hostile inside. Of all the potentially inhabited silos about the premises.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Saturday, 16 November 2024 17:22 (nine months ago)

anybody feeling this new (good) tape ? any of y'all wanna go outside? come onnnnn, let's TALK

Lowell N. Behold'n, Friday, 22 November 2024 22:16 (nine months ago)

I've just started s2. enjoyed s1 despite the TV-ness.

kinder, Saturday, 30 November 2024 21:13 (eight months ago)

S1 only covered the first half of the first book. Hoping S2 can cover a lot more and keep this series from needing to be 5 seasons long to cover everything, but it really did make sense to end S1 when they did from a dramatic, TV series perspective, I guess. I just worry that this is such a big budget show, it could be canceled any season, and that would really suck.

For those who read the books, I'm very curious how they'll navigate the 2nd one in the show

octobeard, Saturday, 30 November 2024 22:14 (eight months ago)

I’m pretty sure the show is very successful by Apple’s standards so I don’t think it’s in danger of being canceled

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 30 November 2024 22:23 (eight months ago)

i'm wicked sorry for crop dusting this thread with spoilers

Lowell N. Behold'n, Sunday, 1 December 2024 00:53 (eight months ago)

i've enjoyed this season a lot. looking forward to more ferguson and zahn, they are great together.

Apple has renewed this to its conclusion apparently. Two more seasons.

groovypanda, Monday, 23 December 2024 13:50 (eight months ago)

That's a lot of walking up and down the stairs

Grape Fired At Czar From Crack Battery (President Keyes), Monday, 23 December 2024 14:47 (eight months ago)

Hope those actors are fit.

I watch TV very often of an evening and yet there is something specific to Silo that has made me fall deeply asleep when watching it, for the past 4 or so episodes. Perhaps it's because there's no daylight or because they talk in the same tones all the time.

kinder, Monday, 23 December 2024 14:51 (eight months ago)

It’s definitely gotten a bit monotonous. I need to rewatch or at least skip through the last few because they weren’t really holding my attention.

Same.

I liked (not loved) the first season. So far I’m finding the new season a lot more tedious. Hoping it turns a corner if/when Juliet ever gets to interact with more than one other character. None of the other characters in the silo are as compelling so it’s hard to justify nerfing your protagonist for the whole season.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Monday, 23 December 2024 15:18 (eight months ago)

also struggling with this season. takes me hours to watch an episode as i keep getting distracted / bored and checking out youtube etc. going to persevere a bit longer as Steve Zahn always rules.

stirmonster, Monday, 23 December 2024 19:45 (eight months ago)

Read the books - they've added a lot of filler/drama for the show that didn't necessarily need to be there. They could have had the story arcs of the first book in a single season or two shorter series (like 6 eps each) that hit all of the beats and would have made for a much more engaging series.

They'll have to pick up the pace compressing the next two books into 2 seasons though. Good luck to them, I hope they take some risks to actually present things fairly authentically from the books but I'm not betting on it.

octobeard, Monday, 23 December 2024 19:53 (eight months ago)

Adding to the second season pile-on here. Choosing to make two poorly acted charisma vacuums (Knox and Shirley) the effective co-leads of the show in lieu of Rebecca Ferguson’s absence is an utterly baffling decision. Every time the show cuts to their storyline (which is frequently) my gf and I groan.

Only two episodes left now so I'll stick with it but god is it pedestrian

groovypanda, Sunday, 5 January 2025 12:15 (seven months ago)

No idea how they made this so repetitive and turgid, the books were very economical IIRC.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 5 January 2025 12:22 (seven months ago)

Yeah. Also did the kids turn up this late in the book? I didn't think so but might be misremembering

groovypanda, Sunday, 5 January 2025 16:07 (seven months ago)

really struggled to finish season 1 so i dont think im gonna continue on.
