the app still exists, so I assume the network does (I think I wound up deleting it, but I would occasionaly open it up as recently as a year ago and see just random images). Confusingly Ello is also now the name of a more high profile reading app that has nothing to do with old Ello.

TBH I was only familiar with his standup before he ever did Whose Line, back in the early 90's. He was exceptionally funny back then.

Yeah, it was the second screenshot there that I saw (which was a reply to the "just say you hate trans kids") - but yeah the guy's just dumb. Whatever you think of Nate Silver, I'd guess he at least has some idea of what the Democratic Party's platform was - even if he ascribes it no moral weight, he can distinguish it from BLM.

the fake cybersecurity expert having a total meltdown and proclaiming the world needs a pax americana and then pretending their car was in for repairs and not just towed is proving online meltdowns are back

Crack's Addition (Boring, Maryland), Sunday, 23 March 2025 21:27 (two months ago)

Usually find a thing like that on LinkedIn

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 23 March 2025 21:31 (two months ago)

I couldn't tell if the fake cybersecurity guard meltdown was a legit meltdown or some kind of bit to tank the account because they want out from doing it. I blame social media in 2025 for poisoning me enough cognitively that I spent way too much time thinking about that difference.

CVE-2019-15006 is still a funny story though: https://www.theregister.com/2019/12/05/atlassian_zero_day_bug/

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 23 March 2025 21:46 (two months ago)

The other recent thing he’d posted was about trying to start his car which was at a “repair yard” or some similar wording with just his phone, but his model only remotely turned on the a/c via phone. Pretty sure if your car is being repaired, someone hands you your keys when you pay up. However, if your car is towed, they do not have the keys.

Combined with references to heavy drinking, I feel he may be having a Bad Time and probably needs a respite

Blue checks coming:
https://bsky.app/profile/bsky.app/post/3lndjyecwcs2a

jaymc, Monday, 21 April 2025 16:12 (one month ago)

https://bsky.social/about/blog/04-21-2025-verification

jaymc, Monday, 21 April 2025 16:24 (one month ago)

This is interesting:

Blue checks issued by platforms are just one form of trust. But trust doesn’t come only from the top down; it emerges from relationships, communities, and shared context.

So, we’re also enabling trusted verifiers: organizations that can directly issue blue checks. Trusted verifiers are marked by scalloped blue checks, as shown below.

For example, the New York Times can now issue blue checks to its journalists directly in the app. Bluesky’s moderation team reviews each verification to ensure authenticity.

When you tap on a verified account's blue check, you’ll see which organizations have granted verification.

jaymc, Monday, 21 April 2025 16:25 (one month ago)

seems reasonable

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 21 April 2025 17:25 (one month ago)

Not at all interested in "verification" on Bluesky, or anywhere else. Go ahead, pretend to be me. See where it gets you.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Monday, 21 April 2025 17:31 (one month ago)

I’m very aware of what isn’t relevant to you or your interests because you spend a lot of time making that clear! A sort of self-verification, if you will

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 21 April 2025 17:47 (one month ago)

glad they're going to be issuing their own blue checks. some things should be centralized. the trusted verifier thing is cool but wouldn't be enough.

rainbow calx (lukas), Monday, 21 April 2025 17:56 (one month ago)

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 21 April 2025 19:03 (one month ago)

seems stupid imo

budo jeru, Monday, 21 April 2025 19:06 (one month ago)

i see no issue with verification, it worked fine on twitter until Musk came along.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 21 April 2025 19:08 (one month ago)

I get why people seem to think it sets up a hierarchy or social order but that's dumb. If someone's posting as my local public library, it's nice to see that it's actually them. It only got really stupid on twitter because there was no governance and people assigned clout. I'm sorry, there are reasons to verify someone other than recognizing clout.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 21 April 2025 19:28 (one month ago)

Yep generally i approve if done reasonably well

Theodor W. Adorbso (Hunt3r), Monday, 21 April 2025 19:32 (one month ago)

exactly, Twitter still has a lot of that old-school internet mentality where people will just randomly name themselves "Karl Malone" and you'd just inherently know that was a shitposter and not the real thing, so when the real thing did show up it was very useful to convey that hey, this is the real guy

does anyone know how to get links/URLs for the videos that people post on bsky? It seems to be in-app only?

sleeve, Thursday, 8 May 2025 20:29 (two weeks ago)

specifically I want a link to this video clip

https://bsky.app/profile/levisatyrane.bsky.social/post/3looevjuz5226

sleeve, Thursday, 8 May 2025 20:30 (two weeks ago)

this probably won't work but https://meadow.us-east.host.bsky.network/xrpc/com.atproto.sync.getBlob?did=did%3Aplc%3Aadywzg7ar6r6jd3ngkc7y7ln&cid=bafkreiacfhi66hgixjc572pycgrovxwjileof2qu644kuur2evwdoo3ala

you can download it with yt-dlp, and if you pass the verbose option it'll print the url of the format being downloaded

chihuahuau, Thursday, 8 May 2025 20:58 (two weeks ago)

haha I understand about half of that, but thank you!

sleeve, Thursday, 8 May 2025 20:58 (two weeks ago)

yt-dlp is a commandline program for downloading video or audio from pretty much any popular website

there are probably graphical UIs for it but the terminal version is simple enough to use imo

yt-dlp -v https://bsky.app/profile/levisatyrane.bsky.social/post/3looevjuz5226
is all it took to get the link+video, -v being the verbose option that makes it print the url

chihuahuau, Thursday, 8 May 2025 21:08 (two weeks ago)

I really appreciate that! I am scared of messing around with terminal commands on my Mac, but I feel like that is within my knowledge level and may try it.

sleeve, Thursday, 8 May 2025 21:15 (two weeks ago)

there's almost certainly a decent GUI wrapper for it, i just don't know of any to recommend since i use the terminal version

also my example ain't that great because it will not only print a load of other irrelevant info text, it'll also download the video file to computer.

the clean way to get a link to the clip and nothing else is
yt-dlp --print urls https://bsky.app/profile/levisatyrane.bsky.social/post/3looevjuz5226

chihuahuau, Thursday, 8 May 2025 21:33 (two weeks ago)

This is like the web itself. Early on, we had AOL, and accessing the internet happened through AOL. If the AOL web portal wasn’t showing you something, it would be a lot harder to find. Then more browsers came along, and these linked you out to the broader internet. Now anyone can put up a blog and host their own views online.

Sleeve:

Your Bluesky link contains a streaming video, the link for which is this:

https://video.bsky.app/watch/did%3Aplc%3Aadywzg7ar6r6jd3ngkc7y7ln/bafkreiacfhi66hgixjc572pycgrovxwjileof2qu644kuur2evwdoo3ala/360p/video.m3u8

(I found this easily using the console in Firefox to examine the network activity when loading the bluesky link.)

The stream can can be viewed using VLC player using the "Open Network Stream" option (other media players can probably do the same). VLC player has an option to convert the stream if I wanted to save the video as a single movie file.

As the video is a stream, it's not as simple as having, say, an mp4 file to link to.
