no tolerance for Intolerance

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 28 July 2023 20:06 (two years ago)

But will there be a crowd for The Crowd?

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Friday, 28 July 2023 20:10 (two years ago)

Harlan County, though I've only seen it once. Please, no: Crash.

clemenza, Friday, 28 July 2023 20:21 (two years ago)

Crash, tho I've only seen it a bunch of times. Please, no: Star Wars.

Voting Harlan County like a good socialist - but also it's fascinating and heartbreaking and scary and occasionally funny, just a major work.

I've only seen 6 of these tho, haven't even caught the King Hu or the Brazilian film.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 28 July 2023 20:33 (two years ago)

Please, no: Star Wars. That too, of course--and Raiders--but they won't win; Crash conceivably could.

clemenza, Friday, 28 July 2023 22:19 (two years ago)

I do, in fairness, sometimes wonder what it would be like to swerve the car into oncoming traffic, but that goes back to Annie Hall, not Crash.

I often think of The Green Ray as my single favourite film

jmm, Friday, 28 July 2023 22:54 (two years ago)

Happy Together has become my favorite Wong film, so probably that. Just rewatched Harlan County recently, so great.

Crash is really great lol. It would be a fine winner.

Went for King Hu. It's a brilliant, one of a kind film I think?

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 29 July 2023 10:59 (two years ago)

Intolerance impressed me when I saw it a college film class; I'm not sure I could watch anything but shorter Griffith films these days.

Finalists:

The Crowd
Europa '51
Je, Tu, Il, Elle
The Green Ray
Harlan County
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

I haven't watched A Touch of Zen, guess I should.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 29 July 2023 13:49 (two years ago)

most of King Hu's movies are absolute faves of mine but the 70s run in particular

i double checked cos i thought Touch of Zen was 71 and that's what i'm seeing

Let's talk about local tomatoes (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 29 July 2023 14:43 (two years ago)

I watched Born in Flames in a class and felt like it was congratulating itself for its low-budget incompetence. I don't dislike cinema with revolutionary aims - Ice is one of my all time favourites. The Jarman and Ackerman films, by contrast, show how much world-building a filmmaker can accomplish with the most minimal of resources.

Melancholia was enough of a disappointment that I haven't watched a Von Trier film since. I like Bergman's films of the mid-to-late 60s but Cries and Whispers feels manipulative by comparison, and the start of a decline. I think I remember one shot apiece from Le Rayon Vert, The Crowd and A Touch of Zen, and not much more from Napoléon (although a full restoration of this is apparently due this year). Fire Walk With Me is 1/3 of a great film. I liked Star Wars at 5 and Raiders at 9.

I don't remember any strong feelings about the Rossellini film so Crash it is.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 31 July 2023 02:45 (two years ago)

Melancholia is a pretty WTF choice. Not just a middling-to-bad movie but shouldn't von Trier be canceled for his sexual harassment by now?

Born in Flames is hardly incompetent at a technical or textural level, but it has gained - or re-gained - a power to astound because of the Twin Towers ending.

Ward Fowler, Monday, 31 July 2023 09:28 (two years ago)

A Touch Of Zen over The Crowd - was such a great experience seeing the restoration alongside A Touch Of Sin at a film festival six or seven years ago.

etc, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 00:01 (two years ago)

have actually seen fewer of these than I expected… my uneducated vote is for star wars…

k3vin k., Tuesday, 1 August 2023 00:11 (two years ago)

I don't have a clear favorite this time. Looks like it'll be Je, tu, il, elle unless I really like Crash when I watch it tonight.

Cherish, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 17:06 (two years ago)

Born in Flames is hardly incompetent at a technical or textural level, but it has gained - or re-gained - a power to astound because of the Twin Towers ending.

I think that just underscores what a silly, privileged fantasy it is.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 17:18 (two years ago)

among this group it’s definitely Blue for me.

I liked Je, Tu, Il, Elle, Cries and Whispers, Happy Together, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Crash

Still haven’t seen Harlan County, will watch it soon. The Green Ray is another one of those films that is not really available, and I haven't watched it. I don’t know about cancellation, but I think Melancholia is a pretty great film

Dan S, Friday, 11 August 2023 00:27 (one year ago)

Not much hesitation going with Cries and Whispers, but Europa ‘51 and The Green Ray are strong seconds.

Josefa, Friday, 11 August 2023 00:40 (one year ago)

Crash just edged out the Ackerman for me. Sorry Clemenza!

I've now watched 36 films for these polls.
