all I know is that I had never heard of a backslash before encountering it when I cut my eye teeth on DOS at age 32 and that first encounter was the \ character, so that's my basis.

It occurs to me that something marked XXX might indicate you are about to read some hot forward slash/backslash slash fic.

Forward slash is the one that’s leaning forward. It’s also the only slash used as punctuation in the English language. The backslash is just the other one, largely useless outside of a few specialized circles, defined only by its opposition to the forward slash. There was once a time, before the advent of the gauche backslash, when the forward slash had the simple and noble name of slash. I weep for those days.

Both slashes have an end that is "back" (meaning, in this context, left) and an end that is "forward" (meaning, in this context, right).

Obviously the top can't be back unless the bottom is forward, and vic versa. So, theoretically, the answer is both.

This is one of those places where language fails us.

I have a friend who despises the language we use about keys. "'Turn the key to the right'? The top moves right and the bottom moves left, and both are salient." She is correct.

There is no up without down, no forward without backward, no right without left.

And I assure you, wins, I am being utterly serious.

xp to ye mad puffin, if you visualise the slashes as standing on their ends - more natural than hanging by their heads- then one is leaning forward (in the direction of reading) and one is leaning back.

and the part of your hand you can see when you turn a key 'to the right' moves to the right.

Windows uses \ for folders because DOS used / as a parameter starter. This was when everything could fit on floppies and directories were less important.

In html and unicode, / is solidus or slash. \ is backward/reverse solidus.
