Thiem beats Bublik 6-3 6-2 6-4
Thiem is overjoyed with the win, he’s beaten Bublik in style. After all his problems, the 2020 winner is delighted. “It was amazing. I haven’t won a slam match since Australia 2021 and that’s a long time. I couldn’t have asked for a better place than this with all the memories.”

dammit gasquet

andrew m., Monday, 28 August 2023 18:32 (two years ago)

Jack Sock, the most unfortunately-named person in professional tennis, announced his retirement after this year’s US Open

Word on the street is that he’s going to switch to pickleball, so I guess the sounds-dirty-but-isn’t train still has a few more miles of track before it

the new drip king (DJP), Monday, 28 August 2023 18:50 (two years ago)

Isner retiring also after the Open, tho not demeaning himself via the pickleball route

johnny crunch, Monday, 28 August 2023 19:27 (two years ago)

holger rune out on court 5 (which he sniped about), out of the tourney to carballes baena

johnny crunch, Monday, 28 August 2023 19:28 (two years ago)

Rune out.

I’ve only just realised that Prime no longer have the rights for this (and are basically ditching ATP/WTA coverage at the end of the year). So…back to following this on the radio / score app.

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 August 2023 19:30 (two years ago)

I did my usual thing of re-upping my Sling subscription for a month to watch ESPN.

I’m not too clear on the Pickle vs Padel differences but I do know that two of the four tennis courts at my local sports centre have been converted to padel. For weeks I never saw anyone in there but now it seems they’re in use. The padellers seem to be having fun, the regular court users swing and shank/frame/sky and spend 70% of the time retrieving balls. (Full size) tennis is frustrating and unrewarding if you’re no good at it, I know this. So I get the appeal of something on a smaller scale, where the enclosure is part of the court too.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 29 August 2023 10:31 (two years ago)

farewell john isner

in another dimension he's still out there playing that fifth set at wimbledon

mookieproof, Thursday, 31 August 2023 22:42 (two years ago)

out in dubs too, damn

ill miss him

johnny crunch, Thursday, 31 August 2023 23:26 (two years ago)

Fun player but his Trumpiness is obnoxious.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 31 August 2023 23:27 (two years ago)

Good he never looked like winning a slam.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 1 September 2023 12:35 (two years ago)

I was quite pleased when he took Roddick out at the USO, what... 14 years ago? But I can't think of a single other time I've rooted for the guy. Maybe vs Nadal at the French, just cos it was a novelty to see Rafa stretched that much. I was definitely Team Mahut during the three days of The Epic, and was glad Anderson outlasted him in The Minor Epic a few years later.

Good luck to him and all that. I don't suppose being 6-10 is much fun in later, civilian life.

Michael Jones, Friday, 1 September 2023 13:29 (two years ago)

Sigh @ djoko coming from two sets down

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 2 September 2023 10:24 (two years ago)

Ostapenko, more like Osta-spank-o

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 4 September 2023 03:52 (two years ago)

Three US men in the quarters!

xyzzzz__, Monday, 4 September 2023 07:03 (two years ago)

Last time we had an American champ I remember complaining bitterly in here that the USTA were pulling every scheduling trick in the book to engineer a Roddick-Agassi final out of the weather chaos of that event. (Ferrero and Nalbandian still did their best to try and spoil that).

This year, I say do whatever it takes to get Shelton or Tiafoe into the final!

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 September 2023 07:36 (two years ago)

Now that Djoko got beaten at Wimbledon I am hoping other young players will see that and keep on chipping away.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 4 September 2023 10:10 (two years ago)

Otherwise I am pleased that Ostapenko got her win. If she is firing on all cylinders she will take some stopping.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 4 September 2023 10:11 (two years ago)

In 1975-78 the opening three rounds of the men's singles were best-of-three at the USO. If only, eh?

I think of the various BO3 defeats Djokovic has suffered recently - Zverev, Auger Aliassime, Evans, Rublev, Bautista Agut, Davidovich Fokina, Vesely, Rune, Sonego, Musetti et al (from a list I keep in my head to cheer me up) - he probably wins them all in five.

It's a shame the elite players who are actually in form (Medvedev, Sinner, Zverev, Rublev) are mostly in Alcaraz's half, and the ones for whom the wheels have come off lately (Tsitsipas, Rune, Ruud, FAA) were in Novak's.

Gauff-Ostapenko! Almost worth the PPV fee. Except that it'll be in the middle of the night.

novak/fritz scheduled for midafternoon

johnny crunch, Monday, 4 September 2023 21:06 (two years ago)

Rooting for Tiafoe but it's not looking good against Shelton right now

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 04:21 (two years ago)

Yeah I was pulling for Tiafoe too, but gotta say, Shelton is strong. He's a little wild, but he already does a lot of things well.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 6 September 2023 04:40 (two years ago)

Never thought I'd root for an American but anything to get rid of Djokovic

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 6 September 2023 10:30 (two years ago)

Was good to see Coco win, but dang Keys looks even better so far — 4-0 in the first set against Sabalenka. Wonder if she can keep it up.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 8 September 2023 02:49 (two years ago)

Spoiler: No, she couldn't.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Friday, 8 September 2023 04:01 (two years ago)

Looks like a crazy match, that one.

Gauff's comments on the protest were sound.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 8 September 2023 07:43 (two years ago)

man shelton has a pretty limited game huh

k3vin k., Friday, 8 September 2023 21:02 (two years ago)

It's just power, but he breaks Djoko to get us to a 3rd set tie break

xyzzzz__, Friday, 8 September 2023 21:48 (two years ago)

Comedy smash into the net from Djoko, but expect his vast experience to see him through

xyzzzz__, Friday, 8 September 2023 21:48 (two years ago)

Shelton has actually been pretty good from the back of the court.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 8 September 2023 21:53 (two years ago)

5-1 but has won the next two big rallies. 5-3

xyzzzz__, Friday, 8 September 2023 21:54 (two years ago)

6-4. MP

xyzzzz__, Friday, 8 September 2023 21:56 (two years ago)

Does it

xyzzzz__, Friday, 8 September 2023 21:57 (two years ago)

damn djokovic does the phone thing after match point

k3vin k., Friday, 8 September 2023 21:59 (two years ago)

Lol @ djoko's celebration, mimicking Shelton's phone hangup.

The man cannot miss an opportunity to rub his nose in shit. For once I was ok with it. He's 19 and cocky so gotta take him down a bit xp

xyzzzz__, Friday, 8 September 2023 22:00 (two years ago)

alcaraz holds serve SO easily vs medvedev, its almost comical

johnny crunch, Friday, 8 September 2023 23:53 (two years ago)

Save this rally for posterity. Alcaraz defense after defense on the net. He lost the point but my god incredible reactions. Even Medvedev was waving the racket

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:13 (two years ago)

TB

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:13 (two years ago)

Medvedev 3 SPs

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:18 (two years ago)

And he takes it.

Alcaraz...it doesn't look like his fhs are firing rn.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:20 (two years ago)

Error after error now from Alcaraz, bp

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:29 (two years ago)

The drop shot hasn't worked, predictably enough. Game's gone.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:30 (two years ago)

Alcaraz unraveling just a bit here

sknybrg, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:31 (two years ago)

It's Medvedev doing the drop shots now!

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:32 (two years ago)

Medvedev has two more bps. Alcaraz hangs on

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:41 (two years ago)

johnny crunch, Saturday, 9 September 2023 00:45 (two years ago)

sknybrg, Saturday, 9 September 2023 22:25 (two years ago)

What a play for the CP!!

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 September 2023 22:25 (two years ago)

Belated congrats to Gauff, I was away yesterday and couldn't watch the match. She has been a fun player to watch on the rise, would seem well positioned to be a top contender for some years to come — but of course, experience shows you can't take that for granted.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 10 September 2023 19:13 (two years ago)

Gauff with a nice comeback and sweet post match comments re her Dad, family, and others .

Hoping Medvedev will win today

curmudgeon, Sunday, 10 September 2023 19:44 (two years ago)

Yeah I feel like Medvedev could solidify a move from player-crowds-love-to-hate to crowd favorite if he beats Djoko.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 10 September 2023 19:54 (two years ago)

Not happening so far. Medvedev is playing just a bit too loose rn.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:03 (two years ago)

Brutal rally for 2 SPs d

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:06 (two years ago)

Too many DFs from Med, not enough consistency. Shame really

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:18 (two years ago)

Another deuce on a Med serve...

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:28 (two years ago)

Has the looks of a 3-setter so far, but Med could always find a higher gear.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:32 (two years ago)

Serving gets him through it but something has to improve.

Djoko hasn't lost a point on his serve in this set so far

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:35 (two years ago)

0-30..

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:36 (two years ago)

Did great, on serve - but how to break novak

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:37 (two years ago)

Just a machine. 3-3, but yeah Medvedev has spent way more time serving.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:42 (two years ago)

Great drop shot dtl. 0-15

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:43 (two years ago)

Now to the 1st BP..

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:46 (two years ago)

Amazing game. Medvedev just had the upper hand in the last couple of rallies..but still a game to save

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:50 (two years ago)

3rd deuce, epic

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:51 (two years ago)

Awesome save. Very long rallies, Med getting through...could be a key moment in the match.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 21:52 (two years ago)

Amazing game from Djoko, it looks like he is fatigued.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:00 (two years ago)

Another deuce

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:01 (two years ago)

BP med

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:04 (two years ago)

What a save from Novak, Jesus.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:05 (two years ago)

Follows it up with another point at the net. GP

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:06 (two years ago)

Fantastic passage of play.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:07 (two years ago)

Love service hold. It's shifting...you feel can Med can break him...but Novak is such a good tactician too.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:11 (two years ago)

Every time we have a rally of 7+ shots Djoko loses but he is shortening points and gets through that masterfully. 5-5

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:20 (two years ago)

What a fucking rally. Djoko should've lost that but poor smash from Med. Deuce

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:24 (two years ago)

Hold.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:25 (two years ago)

Come on Med...if he can wring this set out from this cunt he should win the match.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:26 (two years ago)

Two DFS, deuce..

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:31 (two years ago)

SP after a great rally

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:33 (two years ago)

Great serve and volley should've gone dtl aargh

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:34 (two years ago)

Epic service game..

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:38 (two years ago)

this whole second set hs been a grind

johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:38 (two years ago)

Tactical masterclass from Djoko, should he win this. Lots of serve and volleying to get him through, no adjustment from Med.

TB

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:40 (two years ago)

Med, 3-1. But then weak. 3-3.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:45 (two years ago)

Another timid smash from Med leading to insanity. Med wins that point tho'.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:49 (two years ago)

So...sp Djoko.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:51 (two years ago)

Just lost this in the most stupid way. I am off!

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:52 (two years ago)

what a set

sknybrg, Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:52 (two years ago)

Total blown chance.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 10 September 2023 22:56 (two years ago)

1h 45m set
novak really dug deep

johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 September 2023 23:02 (two years ago)

well done nole

johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 September 2023 23:43 (two years ago)

Djoko is a great player who I will never like

curmudgeon, Monday, 11 September 2023 04:43 (two years ago)

A dozen Slams in his 20s, two years in decline, and now a dozen Slams in his 30s. Let’s just fast forward to him getting the gold medal in Paris so we can wave goodbye.

Michael Jones, Monday, 11 September 2023 07:55 (two years ago)

Djokovic and Margaret Court. What a combination.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Monday, 11 September 2023 17:28 (two years ago)

Has anyone used "Coco" and "Djoko" in a headline together, because they should.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 11 September 2023 18:46 (two years ago)

Doubt we'll ever see a player get 20+ slams again. This is as good as it gonna get xp
