The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 7 September 2023 09:18 (one year ago)

I thought about going with movies generally yo opted for “new” movies to focus the conversation. I went with “no” - it’s more about the trailer and what people close to me are feeling.

Critics matter less to me now for new movies, but I need to think out through why that is beyond just “I can’t pick up the Baltimore City Paper and read their reviews anymore.@

It has influenced me to check out tv series that I wasn't really aware of.
Currently working through From which I'd only come across while channel hopping before

I'd say yes, but only in the sense that a score below 70 or so will give me pause. (Above 70 suggests it is probably somewhat worthwhile, so I don't really make distinctions between an 80 and a 95.) But I think I'm more likely now to pay attention to the critics I follow on Letterboxd first and foremost.

jaymc, Thursday, 7 September 2023 13:41 (one year ago)

not in the slightest. ilxor.com does, though

budo jeru, Thursday, 7 September 2023 16:21 (one year ago)

Ive never used Rotten Tomatoes. There are critics I trust on Letterboxd though.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 7 September 2023 16:36 (one year ago)

I use it mostly to filter out bad kids' movies.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 7 September 2023 16:37 (one year ago)

Which has become much less pressing as I have only one minor child left. :(

gods no

School of RAAC (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 7 September 2023 17:18 (one year ago)

sometimes, but I love a lot of things that have a shitty RT aggregate score, and I regularly think films with very high agg scores are shit.

sometimes it helps me make a decision between a few movies but I usually always looka t the reviews themselves to see what it is that sucks about it. after all, that shitty Sound of Freedom movie got good reviews but every positive review came from a complete fucking braindead idiot and I also knew the subject matter was bogus

in conclusion, I'm stupid and shouldn't be trusted, wimps and posers leave the all thank u

I do sometimes look at RT, but only to find reviews from people I trust or find interesting. The cumulative score doesn't mean anything to me except maybe confirmation bias, like, "Yeah, I thought that looked bad."

No, but my Letterboxd mutuals often do

fair but so uncool beliefs here (Eric H.), Thursday, 7 September 2023 17:48 (one year ago)

I think Metacritic does a better job as far as that kind of aggregation goes, because their pool is smaller and more weighted toward established critics and also because they attempt to give a number score to each review so it's not just "positive" or "negative."

If the RT/MC scores are good enough, if can increase my interest in a flick I wouldn’t otherwise know about

But enough friends and trusted podcast sources repeatedly going, “Dude, you gotta see this flick!” still holds priority.

i do not check rt or metacritic, both of which have been net bad for criticism imo

i will see any horror movie that comes out, period. no self-respecting critic i know of reviews horror with any interest or positivity

ivy., Monday, 11 September 2023 00:09 (one year ago)

letterboxd is a much better compass

ivy., Monday, 11 September 2023 00:10 (one year ago)

My wife relies almost exclusively on her Letterboxd feed, I tend to hear about things on ilx or (decreasingly) Twitter. When we're both separately hearing interesting things about the same movie, it'll definitely encourage us to check it out.

It stopped working unless I disabled my adblocker and it's not a site worth the energy of doing that.

Not sure abt 'self-respecting', but Kim Newman still reviews most new horror films for Empire and Sight and Sound, and often has positive or interesting things to say about them. Am not a fan, but The Observer's film critic (until very recently), Mark Kermode, was also a genre-friendly critic who generally gave positive and informed reviews to horror films. Here's a 4 star review for Talk to Me: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/jul/30/talk-to-me-review-danny-and-michael-philippou-an-evil-dead-for-the-snapchat-generation-danny-michael-philippou

Ward Fowler, Monday, 11 September 2023 13:53 (one year ago)

Yeah, I never even visit rotten tomatoes, letterboxd score I might glance at but what my mutuals on there think matters much more.

Horror has easily the best infrastructure of fandom/criticism, there are more fan sites, podcasts, academic articles about it than any other genre. I suppose broadsheet generalist critics might not cover it much but I can't imagine having difficulties finding reviews of horror films.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 11 September 2023 14:26 (one year ago)

it's not about the difficulty of finding reviews but uh finding the right kind of review. was unaware of kim newman, ward, so thank you!!!!

ivy., Monday, 11 September 2023 14:52 (one year ago)

My pleasure ivy. His Video Dungeon book is a good collection of obscure and (sometimes) underrated horror films etc from the last twenty or so years, well worth seeking out.
