BNP wins another Council seat - does anyone care anymore?

I remember when they won a by-election in the Isle of Dogs in the 80s or 90s. Huge outcry, winning BNP Councillor effectively shunned at meetings, concerted campaign to win back the seat next time, efforts made to improve race relations in the area, etc. Are we too blasé about this today? Or do we perhaps even accept now that the BNP is representative of a section of the population?

I think there are efforts being made to get rid of the 3 sitting ones and to improve race relations in the area. That said I don't think the problem's going to go away - in fact it'll get worse before it gets better if the rest of Europe is any guide. The question of "Who gets to be European?" is the really major issue of the next 20-30 years, with climatic and political instability creating a continued refugee flow. The success of the far right is a localised reaction to these big regional changes.

"the problem" in my post meaning "BNP success" not immigration!

Don't they get Channel 4 in Blackburn? Didn't they see the Young, British... doc a couple of weeks ago? I was wondering why the rest of the Council hadn't walked out when I heard this story. Time was they'd refuse to sit at the same table as a BNP member.

If ever you wondered why you should vote, the majority of 16 gives you a pretty good answer.

Knowing first hand about how they worm their way into these areas and their recruitment techniques it doesn't surprise me. Recent events have opened my eyes to the number of closet sympathisers they have - publicly denouncing them and privately praising them, it'd shock the hell outta you.

These successes are very invidious because the chances are they'll probably be perfectly competent councillors (which isn't saying much).

Then before you know it people will be thinking 'well the councillors are ok, how bad can a constituency MP be'....you can guess the consequences.

one year passes...
I thought we'd seen the last of this in London. Alas, no.

What with this and the success of UKIP in the June Euro elections, it seems that New Labour is taking Britain to a strange plsce. Is it time for a resurgence in overt anti-fascism in the culture generally, a la Rock Against Racism etc?
