What other forums do you read?

Thank god this place has stuck around all these years, but as someone who doesn’t do any social media (unless you count forums/Reddit) I feel like I’m pretty limited in what I read. Are there any other forums you still read/post on in 2023?

Not a one any more, unless you count Bluesky, which I just joined (but don't anticipate using). I used to comment on Disqus, but that's a losing game.

I only really spend time in discords, and patreon ones at that, so namedropping them would be pointless.

ILX is the only generalized discussion forum I participate in or read. My only other regular forums are specialized around the discussion of hiking and backpacking.

i read the hoffman forums for music shit and that's about it (outside of bluesky which replaced twitter for me). I only occasionally look at reddit, I hate those little avatars that make me think everyone posting there is some smug little shit or faux naif moron.

Disqus is really designed for teenagers who want to IM each other in class

I don’t post there but the gay-oriented Datalounge can be hilarious and informative. It’s much less moderated than ILX so beware.

DataLounge is a transphobic shithole. They also think every male celebrity who died in the 80’s/90’s was secretly closeted and had HIV. Incredibly misogynistic, too

I’m barely even on ilx any more, but it’s still my favorite forum online, and by far.

Miss y’all.

Funny to get this question as the likes of Reddit and twitter are facing oblivion.

This place is the Uriah Heep of message boards - never really went away, just kept chugging along on the edge of the radar. The only thing that's missing is being popular in Russia.

i'm betting there's a big overlap between ILX and metafilter, although i understand the latter is rather draconian about moderation and non-tolerant of people who don't use proper capitalization and punctuation

I post on The Gear Page. It's a shit message board about guitar equipment with a sizeable population of rockist, boomer assholes, but there are some cool people there too. I started posting there just to be trolly, but occasionally chime in on a discussion. When I started posting there, I played guitar, but at this point in my life it's very rare and it would take a lot of practice for me to get back up to being listenable.

I also post on the Phish.net message board pretty regularly, even though I only listen to Phish very occasionally. Again, this is a board where I originally started posting as a joke, but it just turned into regular reading. Most of my contributions are usually to off-topic (non-phish) posts.

I used to post regularly on I Love Fuzz, another guitar equipment-focused board, but with cooler people than The Gear Page. There just hasn't been much activity there in the past few years - I get the impression that many people just moved to reddit. There are still a handful of regulars soldiering on and posting there, but the site has technical issues and sometimes grinds to a halt.

Perhaps I should clarify and say half the original members are dead and half of those were shot.

Some of the Facebook public groups on dedicated interests ( eg music, LA in the 60s and 70s, overland travel on the Silk Road ) are very good if your ethics allow. And sometimes the most amazing content (especially photos) turns up that has been kept by someone in their private collection for years.

This is the only forum I read and/or post on. It’s nice! Keeps my forum reading streamlined, time-wise, and my blinders safely in place. The once a week a friend links me to something on Twxtter, and then I poke around for a minute, will quickly come across a wrong-bad opinion and feel upset for an hour

I used to post on the Guardian boards back in the day before it was sunk and people fled to various offshoot-rafts of safety. Now pretty much my entire web experience, such as it is, is tied to this place. It's one of the few (relatively) sane places left.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Tuesday, 10 October 2023 19:58 (one year ago) link

My one co-worker is a metafilter reader. I think it's good that he is, so I don't need to, but he can still update me on weird things from time to time.

I look at rpg.net from time to time, but very irregularly.

ian, Tuesday, 10 October 2023 20:38 (one year ago) link

didn’t know metafilter was still chugging away… it seems like the old school web 1.5 version of Reddit

brimstead, Tuesday, 10 October 2023 20:48 (one year ago) link

that's why i stick around the old places, all of the ones that aren't technologically obsolete have been honed to expertly keep their users in a ruminative spiral

For film discussion, I occasionally still read/post on criterionforum dot org. It's largely whittled down to an insular group of long-time regulars though -- not very welcoming to new posters and not much interesting discussion anymore either. I also ran afoul of them for making fun of Woody Allen once.

Is BCO still a thing?

My college radio station has a board where alums of a certain vintage all gripe about life and talk about music. There's a couple of posters here who post there too.
