But if you just knew them as names on Baseball Reference, I could see where you might: they were both Cubs in the '70s, both had numerous .300+ seasons (Madlock 11, Buckner 8), both won batting titles, both cleared 2,000 hits (2,700 for Buckner, just over 2,000 for Madlock), neither was much of a HR hitter (10-15 a season), nor much with the glove, and their careers overlapped (Buckner started four years earlier and lasted three years longer). Madlock was the far superior player, and he didn't spend his life living down one play. At a distance, though--and if you didn't know Madlock was Black and Buckner white--their names and resumes aren't all that dissimilar.
