i was quite offended when the person on holloway road gave me a flyer for them

gareth (gareth), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

who or what is d4?

H (Heruy), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

New Zealand bunch who are either bogan music, a bad Blink 182, good modern garage rock or a combination of the above.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, I got fucking SPAMMED by them the other day. Jesus christ. You ask for the "new rock'n'roll" and you get retro shit spam. Fan-fucking-tastic. The last newsletter had this totally incoherant and ill-formed and TOTALLY IGNORANT rant about bubblegum pop and Madonna that made me so angry I nearly spat back a 100k rant at them, but hey, you know, I was in a web cafe, and I wasn't going to rant at someone.

Sometimes I hate the overly-defensive chartpop (ironic or not) appreciation on IL*, but then I go back into the garagerock world for even a second, and I go running out again. Man, I love the JAMC and the Troggs as much as the next dirty dronerock girl, but when people try to tell me that Madonna was the birth of sex and plastic in pop music, I want to scream and break Elvis records over their heads. Grrrrr.

Anyway...

kate, Friday, 22 November 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

d4 = bullshit retro rock.

Gareth, you have had your haircut recently - obviously it was not done short enough !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

d4, proved by science to be only a third as good as d12...

(frankly i think that's being generous, i was dragged to see them by mrs carsmile and they were poo on a stick, the sort of thing one expects to see first on at the bull and gate on a rainy tuesday...)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 22 November 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, come on, flyerers have a tedious job to do and they'll try to give them to anyone, regardless.

alix (alix), Friday, 22 November 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep getting people trying to give me leaflets about learning English (hey I was an award-winning critic and editor, albeit in a tiny pond) or basic computer skills (I have a 1st in Computer Science) = these things are not that carefully aimed.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 22 November 2002 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

d4 are they a sum 41 tribute band?

Is Still Waiting going to be number one this week? It's probably my fave single of this year, it's even better than Sk8er Boi!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 22 November 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a very discriminating flyerer. I won't just give mine to anyone. Fuck, they cost me money. Usually.

kate, Friday, 22 November 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

please do not judge new zealand music on the d4 and the datsuns.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 23 November 2002 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

haha the d4 are the only noo-garage band that I halfway like - I saw them waaay back in thee dayz @ orbitz in dunedin (the whole datuns/d4 randomly stumbling into ukhype deserves better thought that I've given it) ; & they have the bestest bass-mantis evah! props to their gritty nz social realism with "north shore bitch"! & so on! & dion! & jimmy!

(nb they haven't had a single as good as "in too deep" though) (& they've been around for years, & they're on flying nun - pretty apposite cover of thee Bored Games' "Joe 90" on the Under The Influence comp)

ps : ned i'm gonna send you some d4 now! "bad blink 182" indeed!

pps nu-message alert : please do not judge nz music on the dead c either, mind.

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

please do not judge new zealand music on the d4 and the datsuns

yes we must judge it on crowded house and russell crowe's band

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:04 (twenty-three years ago)

alien overlords: do not judge earth by chaki's devillock

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki those are australian bands.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

or was that the joke. sorry i am literal.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

literally

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i think you could judge everything about new zealand pretty accurately by russell crowe

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

wanna fight?

donald duck (doorag), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

tim and neil finn are from new zealand right?

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 23 November 2002 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

right

the grebtest man evah!, Saturday, 23 November 2002 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, can everyone get around to judging our music based on Nesian Mystik?

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 23 November 2002 07:06 (twenty-three years ago)

wait the REAL d4 are mPLS punXors Dillinger Four:

gabriel (gabe), Saturday, 23 November 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

esskay you speak my language.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 25 November 2002 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

At least the D4 are better then the Datsuns, yuck yuck yuck
I didn't like that Nesian Mystik video, it was like a cellphone ad or something.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

comparing the d4 and the datsuns is like choosing what to eat on fear factor: the congealed blood balls wrapped in pig intestine, or the buffalo testicles.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha! i missed you, di!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes it sounds like we're discussing cancers or something, they are just bands, after all... I'll take the d4 over the Datsuns too; Nothing at All were ok, so Dion gets points for that though the main talent (I think) died. "North Shore Bitch" was a cover but they didn't credit on the 7" I saw, so sadly it wasn't really a diss of the Ak housing project region. Oooh PXT mobiles, swish. Great gimmick guys, was Techrat involved?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 25 November 2002 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

but we ARE discussing cancer - those bands will give you BRAIN TUMOURS. (i haven't heard nothing at all).

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 25 November 2002 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

THE NEW NESIAN MYSTIK ALBUM IS THE BEST THING EVER.

(like, OMG the intro track LOL LOL!) (without (much!) irony!!!)

(haha di what do you think of GOLDENHORSE? They write, like, PROPER SONGS which are CLEVER & FEY & COMPLEX! How thee fuxx0r did they manage the market penetration required to get their singles in the Warehouse?)

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 25 November 2002 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

they played on good morning

calum, Monday, 25 November 2002 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

but not as clever and fey and complex as the Brunettes who are not as clever and fey and complex as VOOM.

gazza, Monday, 25 November 2002 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, the quality of New Zealand music should be judged on the basis of MiSex

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 25 November 2002 07:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't like goldenhorse. i saw them play at refuel with sola monday and it was watery. then they had that horrible fake reggae song. i don't like voom or the brunettes either. i like misex.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i like misex better than yoursex.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

but i like that song "i want yoursex"

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

That faux-ska song was an absolutely fucking DISMAL choice for a single. Someone at Goldenhorse HQ is way too stupid/stoned. Though maybe they have no better songs, I don't know, I loved Bressa Creeting Cake but Mr. Joel from GH was always the second songwriter... at least they didn't get rid of the BEST MEMBER like the Brunettes did.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I assumed this thread would be about Dillinger Four, and even though I am not punX0r I cannot imagine being offended by being handed a D4 flyer.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard that they're very nice guys.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

hey, voom have a song about king kong & in the video they have monkeysuit boy-on-boy action - a narrow pass! (haha i like marystaple's "new dog", too - d'ath vox!). & yeah, apalling first single (& THE STUPID VIDEO) for thee 'horse. their second video is hilarious if you fast forward (y'know, the bit with just her & the light shining behind her & the mariah carey vibe).

taking sides: misex vs dragon vs hello sailor!

skay, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 01:51 (twenty-three years ago)

misex. please!

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

no hello sailor!
