In other animal-related good news, I read today that the four pet hippos left abandoned in Pablo Escobar's compound have spawned a herd of 170, and are now beginning to munch their way through the Columbian countryside. Good news for the hippos, in any event.
― henry s, Sunday, 19 November 2023 19:15 (one year ago) link
oh dip that is lovely hippo news, leaving aside the ecological and social implications
i am imagining people trying to shoo hippos out of their vegetable gardens: go on, git, ye varmints, and the hippos are all like it's not our fault that destiny has united us with your delicious tomatoes, munch munch

I like that after more than half a century of deep sea ROVs and submersibles dropping into and witnessing, scanning and filming the mysteries of The Deep - with powerful 4k cameras these days, how this still really hasn't managed to make the abyssal realm that much less mysterious and terrifying, yet.

California has reintroduced beavers into the wild for the first time in nearly 75 years, in cooperation with the Mountain Maidu tribe of Plumas County, to revitalize the local ecosystem and to act as a buffer during wildfires.
The state Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) said Wednesday it released a family of seven beavers last month at a location in the northwest part of the county known to the tribal community as Tásmam Koyóm, formerly called Humbug Valley by Euromerican settlers.

They're reintroducing them in the UK. Love beavers. Have you seen the video where the lady rescues one who becomes a house beave and then proceeds to steal everything he can from around the house to build a dam with? It's too much.

They were reintroduced in Scotland a while ago. I think they've just started reintroducing them in England. Even then they have to reintroduce them in controlled numbers and locations because they can cause so much damage to their surroundings.

I think they've just started reintroducing them in England
Yes, they've reintroduced them at FORTY HALL, the country park in Enfield where I used to do an inter-house school cross-country run every November. Which means they may have dammed Turkey Brook, which we used to have to run through. What the implications are for the run now, assuming it still happens, I'm not too sure.
...and the beavers had a baby in September. Aww.
