A really vicious gangster in a 1970s Italian poliziotteschi film
Joaquin Phoenix playing Peter Butterworth in a new film about the Carry On franchise.
A guy you’d see hanging around around Camden Lock in 1995
Robin Williams cosplaying Wolverine.
One of those mods who has misunderstood it and also collects trainers.
Lead actor in an ai-generated poster for a British 70s cop show.
A character on a Canadian sketch comedy show from the 2000s that did too many topical Canadian jokes to cross over to the U.S. market.

He looks like Tim from The Office in the inevitable 'where are they now?' show filmed in 2035.

I think he looks a little like Lee Brilleaux from Dr. Feelgood, if Brilleaux had made it another 10 years.

I have to believe that Argentinians' election of this guy is a measure of their desperation.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 22:06 (one year ago)

I was speaking to the Argentinian guy I work with today and he was saying this guy was potentially worse than either Trump and Bolsanoro because unlike them, and despite appearances to the contrary, he is not an actual moron.

The First Time Ever I Saw Gervais (Tom D.), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 22:19 (one year ago)

He's both an economist and a cosplayer. An anarcho-syndicalist and a right-wing authoritarian. He seems like someone who cherrypicked their ideology out of whatever hat did that to his hair.

It is a disgusting... (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 22:23 (one year ago)

Whether these types of populists are morons or not, they're kind of like the game managing quarterback archetype.

They're just lighting the match and throwing it on the already existing fire and trusting that their dutiful voters will do the legwork they're unable to do, so they can mildly condemn it in public but privately rejoice.

Before DeSantis started his anti-drag measures, conservatives in Florida outright didn't give a shit about drag. Lots of them went to drag shows! The "ok groomer" shouts only appeared after he told them to. Now the LGBT Center in town is regularly spray painted and defaced.

Which isn't to say a politician who is more savvy isn't more dangerous, but I don't think they need to be to wreak havoc. Idiots don't even pay attention to risk assessment and do things that hurt them but severely hurt civilians that a savvier person might have sidestepped (aka Jan 6th)

This guy regardless severely sucks ass and it's a bummer that Argentinians have to deal with him now

a very very unfair (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 22:32 (one year ago)

xp sorry but he's definitely not an anarcho-syndicalist

budo jeru, Wednesday, 22 November 2023 22:35 (one year ago)

I remember the last time I worked with an Argentinian, about 20 years ago, was when inflation was something like 200% and the banks had just collapsed. It's rarely dull in Argentina.

In South Florida I was getting tired of picking on Argentines for their infamous high-handedness (they make Cubans look like chimney sweeps).

Argentina obv has a very sordid past with actual fascism as well

Fortunately it seems like this guy's party is pretty fringe, he'll have a tough time building an effective coalition to do anything

The new guy and his party are trying to argue that the numbers of disappeared have been exaggerated.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 22 November 2023 23:04 (one year ago)

I know little about Argentina's system other than what I read in the papers, but I hope they have a better time of it than we did with a fringe candidate in January 2017.
