I just finished ep 3 & thought the monster was cool but maybe head slightly silly design until i learned it is a mix of a pangolin & a star nosed mole which is theee weirdest thing i’ve seen in a minutehttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star-nosed_mole
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 25 November 2023 06:32 (two years ago)
Yeah this is surprisingly good so far — like all of a sudden the Monarchverse starts to work a lot better as a concept. Solid ensemble cast too.
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 25 November 2023 06:38 (two years ago)
yeah i’m kind pf surprised because the movies have mostly had varying degrees of “meh” — i was bracing myself for it and pleasantly surpised. am quite enjoying what i’ve seeni figured wyatt’s brief was that he doesn’t need to do much of a Dad impression since his face pretty much sells that aspect lol

This looks okay, but the new real Godzilla movie that's opening any day now looks awesome.

xpost didn’t i say “mostly”
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 25 November 2023 16:08 (two years ago)
First two episodes of these were surprisingly good. I googled to see if the music was by Trent Reznor, but it was by Leopold Ross, brother of Atticus, Reznor's partner in soundtracks/NIN. I love the idea of Leopold effortlessly aping his brother's deal. "Oh, you think you're the only Ross that knows which buttons have that Reznor magic?"

i enjoyed the new episode this wk, still a good balance of monstery stuff & story i liked how all the scenery still looked a bit like a sound stage, so there was that touch of unreality like the old moviesidk if that was deliberate tho
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 3 December 2023 02:22 (two years ago)
Yeah, still enjoying this although my son is getting slightly frustrated by the lack of monsters.
― groovypanda, Sunday, 3 December 2023 20:45 (two years ago)
I think my son is willing this show to be a masterpiece and he will not admit that he wasn’t that in to episode that dedicated that much time to romantic back story.
― sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 3 December 2023 21:57 (two years ago)
Roffle. I did like this but I remembered thinking "Pretty bold of them to do this kind of side-episode when there's only two more after this" only to double check and realize it's a ten-episode season.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 3 December 2023 22:58 (two years ago)
Bring on in the monsters already!!!
― sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 30 December 2023 15:27 (two years ago)
agreed but am also enjoying the storyline so far. new ep quite exciting!
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 30 December 2023 17:45 (two years ago)
I'm partly watching this show through my son's eyes. This episode was more exciting than the last one but it felt mostly like buildup to the next episode--which I'm expecting will finally be the big monster payoff.
― sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 30 December 2023 19:13 (two years ago)
Oof! Finale packs quite an emotional punch
― groovypanda, Saturday, 13 January 2024 19:27 (two years ago)
totally! the whole idea of losing a parent as a small child and then reuniting with them and they look exactly the same as the only memory/photo you have of them is so beautiful & devastating also keiko & old lee reuniting was equally devastating, they both acted the hell out of that scene i didnt realize til it was over that it was the finale! i do hope another season is on the cards, really enjoyed this season
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 13 January 2024 19:41 (two years ago)
Into episode 5, really not getting the love for this. The flashback story is pretty good, the monster CGI is crap, the modern story is sub-CW.

― papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 18 January 2024 04:36 (two years ago)
I thought this was overall enjoyable and the finale solid. would watch a second season
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 21:14 (two years ago)
Yeah finally caught up with the back half of the season. Not bad, really, and even plugged in a couple of points I thought were glitches in the overall setup. A second season could work.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 28 January 2024 06:16 (two years ago)
And looks like a second season will...well maybe not work, but at least be happening:

Plus:
According to an Apple TV+ press release, the streamer has “struck a new multi-series deal with Legendary Entertainment, which includes a second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and multiple spinoff series based on the franchise.”

we're stuck on 6 not sure we can keep on. the acting is pretty rough on the current storyline. flashback crew is fine. needs more monsters.
guess we'll go til the end since the finale is getting good reviews? idk

keep watching, don’t be a quitter! it’s a really good season imo & the story pays off
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 12 April 2024 01:09 (one year ago)
The show is good overall though with a few bumps in the road, and yes it absolutely does need more monsters next season.
― sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 12 April 2024 01:39 (one year ago)
Totally forgot to finish this. Which I guess is another way of saying ... I did?

Wyatt Russell with a bit of a thing:
"Season 2 of Monarch was really interesting to be able to get to do because we had to expand on certain themes and stuff that we found in the first season to really work. I haven't been briefed on what I can tease and what I can't. I can say that the mystery deepens. There are more monsters that arrive that are really fun to explore in the story. We wanted to level it up, I guess you could say, and in the Monarch way, ratchet up the stakes of the relationships as well. I can tease that the relationships really get ratcheted up."
Bring on the more monsters, I sez.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 April 2025 14:31 (ten months ago)
I didn't realize this even got a second season greenlit!
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 18 April 2025 14:39 (ten months ago)
yay!
― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 18 April 2025 15:02 (ten months ago)
Part of me is still not *entirely* sure what Wyatt would exactly be doing in this season if only because the first season seemed to give his character's full arc in the past. Guess we'll find out!
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 April 2025 15:26 (ten months ago)
Belated but per an IG post from Sawai, season 2 finished a month back. So hopefully runs sometime next year?
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 October 2025 19:22 (four months ago)
And indeed -- February 27th. Enjoy a teaser.

― werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 13 November 2025 22:34 (three months ago)
Huh, and now there's this!
https://gizmodo.com/monsterverse-wyatt-russell-spinoff-apple-tv-2000701053
The spinoff series, which Wyatt Russell will also produce, “follows the story of Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who in 1984 went on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War.” That’s interesting because, on Monarch, Wyatt plays Shaw in the 1950s, so this will tell a story kind of in the middle of the events on that show.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 December 2025 01:05 (two months ago)
sounds like it could be good?

So in the newest trailer, there is a new monster, bigger, that people worship like a god, so Kurt Russell has to rope in Godzilla to help fight this god, which is dangerous, because he is playing god, and no man should play god. Goodness godness.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 3 February 2026 18:44 (two weeks ago)
All of which is true of course. But you forgot to actually link the trailer!
