We Saved Cinema: The ILX Film Poll (for 2022 viewings) Voting Thread - Ballots Due Sunday December 3rd

Just like Tom Cruise Sr, we have held this poll back until it will have the most impact, and the first week's takings are all that really counts.

Voting is NOW OPEN for the ILX 2022 film poll: things that came out somewhere, in some format, for the first time, are eligible. If they only came out in your cul-de-sac in 2022, and everywhere else some other time, you will probably want to make your case to the elctorate, though.

Send ballots to i l x polls ter [at] g ma il [dot] c o m by December 3rd, by which time I expect to have remembered or recovered the password.

MAXIMUM 35 votes
MINIMUM 7 votes

Votes are weighted. Please send your lists with your TOP choice at the TOP, but do not number your choices. (It's very annoying for formatting.)

If you're voting for a non-English-speaking film that has a commonly-accepted English title, by all means include the original title in brackets, but please type the English title first. (This is also to help with tallying, and does not otherwise reflect the poll's stylebook.)

Questions and campaigning are both welcome ITT. Feel free to spread this thread or the voting instructions to friends and strangers.

Remaining movies I haven't seen that look to be worth checking out:

Saint Omer
The Eight Mountains
Godland
The Novelist's Film

Trying to remember what TV and TV-adjacent things are likely to find their way into ballots this time around

Went with Jafar Panahi's No Bears as my #1, which is available to rent on Amazon. Criterion also just released a Blu-ray edition under its new Janus Contemporaries imprint, but you can stream it on their channel as well. A friend of mine said watching it made every American film of the past year seem empty in comparison and I'd have to agree.

Terence Davies's Benediction was runner-up, another great film that's sadly Davies's last. I didn't get the impression they had a huge marketing budget for it, and it's not even available on Blu-ray which seems unusual for a new prestige title, but you can stream it on Kanopy. (Also available on iTunes and Amazon for rental.)

Benediction will be tough to beat for my #1 too

I haven’t seen BENEDICTION, but wasn’t that released 2 years ago?

k3vin k., Monday, 27 November 2023 22:52 (one year ago)

Technically yes, but I don't think it made any ripples at all on that year's poll

Benediction played at TIFF in September 2021, I *think* before it had a distributor. (Probably was there to find one, like so many other films.) It didn't premiere theatrically in the UK or the US until May or June 2022.

birdistheword, Monday, 27 November 2023 23:13 (one year ago)

Ah, Wikipedia:

Benediction had its world premiere as a Special Presentation at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival on 12 September. That same month, the film's UK and Ireland distribution rights were acquired by Vertigo Films. In October 2021, Roadside Attractions acquired North American distribution rights to the film. It was released in United Kingdom on 20 May 2022 and United States on 3 June 2022.

No Bears would be high on my 2023 list, though I guess I should include it here. Similar deal with Cette Maison and The People's Joker.

Do placings have more weight if the ballot is smaller? That is, do all ballots have a total of X points spread among them, or do all #1s have the same value, all #2s have the same value, all #3s, etc? If it's the former, I'll delete the back end of my ballot. If it's the latter, I might as well throw it all in.

All #1s have the same value.

on a skim of the ballots received so far, looks like a surprise shutout for a Spanish director whose feature showed at eight zillion film festivals in 2021 and went wide in English-speaking markets in 2022

Will submit a ballot later today. I want full Benediction force in effect

Parallel Mothers? Saw that just in time for last year's poll, wish I'd thought of it again
