Cheap, Reliable Cars

I'm gonna need one. Let's assume we're not talking about used junkers (tho that'll be the route I'll take, no doubt) - what the hell should I look for? (Emphasis on the first adjective, of course.)

A used Toyota Corrolla. That's what I have. A '95. It's great. Very easy to drive.

(No, I'm not a used car saleswoman.)

you could build one yourself....heres a model.

you need two big round stones and some wood.

Honda Civics-- they run for YEARS, and you can usually find good used ones. My sister has an old Accord (I think 11 years old at this point) that's never had any engine troubles at all; if you take care of them, Hondas just seem to run forever. :- )

lyra (lyra), Friday, 22 November 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Hondas are good (I have a Civic), but Toyotas are generally recognized as the best as far as reliability/durability. Been told this by a few different mechanics.

Aaron A., Friday, 22 November 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Would that apply to early '80s Supras? 'Cos I'm thinking of buying one myself and I want something that is reliable yet fulfills my sad immature sports car fantasies.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 23 November 2002 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

but toyotas are also overpriced and underpowered. you should get a honda spree instead.

pre GM takeover SAABs, pre Ford takeover Volvos, Old Benzes, esp W123 series. Forget everything else.

ten months pass...
Stupid question: I want to sell my used car before we move to Chicago. I still owe a fair amount of money on this car to the lender. The lender has the title of the car, because until I pay off the loan, they "own" the car. If I sell my car for less than the amount that I owe on it, how does it work? Do I have to be prepared to make up the difference right away so that I can get the title to give to the new car owner? Or will the lender automatically give the title to the new owner and I just keep making payments until the difference is paid off. I somehow suspect the former.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I would assume the former as well if its some form of HP deal and not just a bank loan.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The above car is a SAAB Sonnett!! It's a bit of a cult car. I had friends back in Greenwich whose dad owned one.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what an HP deal is. My loan is with a credit union.

What cheap, reliable car would you buy now? (UK)

djh, Wednesday, 19 April 2023 19:43 (two years ago)

I'm in the US, but my answer would be the first one given back in 2003, a Toyota Corolla. Of course, they're not all that "cheap" any more, except relative to other Toyotas and comparable brands, and the Korean manufactured cars are cheaper, but for a combination of price and reliability it's hard to beat the Corolla.

I drive a Mazda CX-5, which while not exorbitant does not, I think, qualify as cheap. It's the best car I've ever owned.

i have a 2018 kia rio, it gets great gas mileage and is certainly a 'point a to point b' kind of vehicle which is all i need. it doesn't even have power locks. a caveat though, it's now a tiktok meme to steal kias because of a fatal security flaw by the manufacturers. something like 300 were stolen in milwaukee last summer and it's happening in other cities now too

(UK)

hopefully i just have as i have just got a 2012 peugeot 107 allure with 60k on the clock.
first car i have bought for me.
i no longer have to worry re kid kaos,
my old functional/boring car that had served its time and been a briliant workhorse,
but needs to go to sleep in a few months.
i.e. £££ to keep on the road.

whereas the 107 felt like a lot of fun to drive, and i have heard good reports re the reliabilty re the engine ..

fatal security flaw

Hadn't heard of this. That is wild and I hope they don't get away with not doing a recall over it.

This video (warning: annoying) shows the basics of the hack and the cheap engineering that enabled it. This article explains what the new software fix does (totally rely on you locking the car with a fob when you get out).

Each year when we take our ancient (Y-reg) Ford Focus in for its MOT the mechanic raves about how the FF is his favourite, most reliable car. When the time comes we might try to see whether we can make do with car shares but if that doesn't work I'd deffo buy another.

Tim, Thursday, 20 April 2023 12:04 (two years ago)

I've been a bit thrown by a) having to buy a car sooner than planned and b) cars seeming to have jumped up in price so much.

I've been driving a Suzuki Swift which I've liked (but had in mind that I'd buy something different this time) but everything seems so expensive and it feels like I can afford a *less good* car this time, which feels an odd position to be in.

djh, Thursday, 20 April 2023 20:16 (two years ago)

Dacia. Absolutely don't underrate them. They're just Renaults without the bells and whistles, and half the price as a result.

Dacia Sanderos any good?

djh, Monday, 8 May 2023 10:47 (two years ago)

It's a lower spec version of a Renault Clio for 2/3 of the price. Seriously, all you're missing is some trim and interior features.

Hello I'm shitty gatsworth (aldo), Monday, 8 May 2023 12:10 (two years ago)

Thanks aldo - appreciated.

Pondering a Picanto but not very excited by that.
