Best TV shows for each year of my life

I was procrastinating and redid my list of the best show that debuted in each year I've been alive. This is for the total run of each show, not just its first season. While there's a lot of options here I'm guessing there's 4 or 5 that are likely to dominate.

I went with Golden Girls

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 12 January 2024 19:42 (one year ago)

Note that as of this writing I haven't seen The Curse finale, so sorry if they completely blew it.

Chris L, Friday, 12 January 2024 19:44 (one year ago)

Of the ones I've seen, Breaking Bad.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 12 January 2024 19:45 (one year ago)

I should’ve gone with Atlanta! (But I’m sure other people will vote for that)

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 12 January 2024 19:45 (one year ago)

what year is friday night lights

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Friday, 12 January 2024 19:47 (one year ago)

Or the Wire

Some great shows on this list

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 12 January 2024 19:47 (one year ago)

anyway, the wire

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Friday, 12 January 2024 19:47 (one year ago)

Judging on a per-hour basis I would go with SCTV, though David Letterman has to win by sheer quantity of hilariousness

Josefa, Friday, 12 January 2024 19:57 (one year ago)

Gotta go with The Simpsons even if it's been crap for the last 25 years

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 12 January 2024 20:08 (one year ago)

I almost voted for the Sopranos. It's held up remarkably well.

twin peaks original, blackadder, or the wire.

oscar bravo, Friday, 12 January 2024 20:23 (one year ago)

voted Sopranos just to irritate everyone who was very wrong on this thread The Sopranos Vs. The Wire

famous instagram dog (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 12 January 2024 20:28 (one year ago)

(even tho the real answer is probably the Larry Sanders Show)

famous instagram dog (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 12 January 2024 20:29 (one year ago)

King of the Hill is the high point of American art imo

craning to be leather (Noodle Vague), Friday, 12 January 2024 20:36 (one year ago)

1. Mad Men
2. The Sopranos or The Larry Sanders Show

I think of Berlin Alexanderplatz as a movie--how I've experienced it--but realize it started on TV.

clemenza, Friday, 12 January 2024 20:55 (one year ago)

I watched it "as a movie" too, i.e. on the big screen in one sitting, but the fact that there were credits and the same theme every 50min or so left me in no doubt that I was watching tv.

Very difficult choice for me here between Space Ghost and Deadwood. Hoping the latter gets plenty votes, it's the best HBO show of its era, but think I'll support my good friend Zorak instead.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 12 January 2024 22:04 (one year ago)

The Deadwood movie doesca surprisingly great job of tying things up long after anyone could've hoped for it, too - absolutely killer final line.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 12 January 2024 22:06 (one year ago)

Hardest poll ever. Lots of top-shelf choices here. And it's overall close enough to my own theoretical list to spur me to finally check out some of these that I still haven't seen. Kudos on the inclusion of very worthy deep cut Enlightened.

Also: Shakey!!!

Great-Tasting Burger Perceptions (Old Lunch), Friday, 12 January 2024 23:38 (one year ago)

Voted Pee-wee's Playhouse, a pop culture icon that was like nothing else on the air.

then the wire i guess

adam t. (abanana), Friday, 12 January 2024 23:47 (one year ago)

When I saw the other options for 1980 I was very happy to count Alexanderplatz.

Chris L, Friday, 12 January 2024 23:55 (one year ago)

Pee-wee's Playhouse, a pop culture icon that was like nothing else on the air

God, I loathed that show.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 12 January 2024 23:56 (one year ago)

I think Twin Peaks: The Return is the most hooked on a series I've ever been in my life.

I think Twin Peaks: The Return is the most hooked on a series I've ever been in my life.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Saturday, 13 January 2024 00:10 (one year ago)

I think....ah, whatever.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Saturday, 13 January 2024 00:11 (one year ago)

its happening again

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 13 January 2024 00:15 (one year ago)

I don't know everything here. Mad Men.

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Saturday, 13 January 2024 02:21 (one year ago)

voted Homicide bc it is truly excellent

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 13 January 2024 03:34 (one year ago)

No way will the winner of this poll get more than 10% of the votes cast. I won't vote because I have far too little familiarity with the bulk of this list. It's just how things fell out in my life.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Saturday, 13 January 2024 03:39 (one year ago)

good list, im your same age

voted sopranos

johnny crunch, Saturday, 13 January 2024 03:40 (one year ago)

Dear god that run from Jeopardy through Twin Peaks (excepting my not being a Trekkie). It’s a coin toss between Golden Girls and MST3K and I’m just voting for the one I expect to get fewer votes

Wack Snyder (Eric H.), Saturday, 13 January 2024 13:39 (one year ago)

Stopped at TNG, felt no need to go further.

Jeff, Saturday, 13 January 2024 14:13 (one year ago)

remember guys

tactical voting is the most awful sin on this earth

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 13 January 2024 14:28 (one year ago)

It's unreal to me that Always Sunny launched all the way back in 2005

Wack Snyder (Eric H.), Saturday, 13 January 2024 14:30 (one year ago)

Pleased that there’s a lot of diversity in people’s faves so far!

Chris L, Saturday, 13 January 2024 21:24 (one year ago)

voted Larry Sanders even though it was highly influential on that shit on there that I won't even name.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Saturday, 13 January 2024 21:36 (one year ago)

i voted "space ghost coast to coast" because i'm one of those people who hasn't engaged with popular culture since i was in college

Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 14 January 2024 16:30 (one year ago)

Going with 30 Rock - pretty consistently funny from start to end for a show with that many seasons, with only a few drops in quality along the way.

nashwan, Sunday, 14 January 2024 19:48 (one year ago)

Plus part of the enjoyment was reading the thread after viewing at the time for quotes and missed gags and references. Perhaps only Sunny can really rival it for that.

nashwan, Sunday, 14 January 2024 20:04 (one year ago)

It’s freaky that Space Ghost Coast to Coast was longer ago than the ‘60s cartoon it was based on was from it.

Josefa, Sunday, 14 January 2024 20:21 (one year ago)

Note that as of this writing I haven't seen The Curse finale, so sorry if they completely blew it.

For the record, they definitely did not.

Chris L, Monday, 15 January 2024 16:27 (one year ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 18 January 2024 00:01 (one year ago)

I like a lot of these, but wasn't as drawn in by any of them as much as I was by Twin Peaks: The Return. Deadwood is second for me, an amazing series. I also really liked Enlightened

Dan S, Thursday, 18 January 2024 00:59 (one year ago)

I think I'm going with Mad Men here because I loved it from beginning to end. Twin Peaks: The Return is close but I want more of it. The Wire and Mr. Show also under consideration.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 18 January 2024 02:28 (one year ago)

2018: Lodge 49

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 18 January 2024 02:30 (one year ago)

This is a great list, and damn - hard to choose.

Short list: Golden Girls, The Simpsons, Liquid Television, The Wire, and Breaking Bad

Love that Sportscenter is here... it's utter trash now but from the late 80's through the 90's it was pretty amazing and introduced the sports media world to some incredible talent and unique style.

octobeard, Thursday, 18 January 2024 04:57 (one year ago)

1984: Miami Vuce

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 18 January 2024 09:07 (one year ago)

*Vice

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 18 January 2024 09:07 (one year ago)

I wanted to make a joke about the most classic era of SportsCenter being circa 1980 when Tom Mees was the main anchor, but then I read on Wikipedia that he died very young and tragically (drowned in a pool). But the show was fun to watch at that time - it was before they had any technology.

Josefa, Thursday, 18 January 2024 14:08 (one year ago)

I feel like 30 Rock is actually underrated these days, it was mercilessly tight & funny. So many memes were ripped off from 30 Rock joke constructions, which now have filtered into so many tv shows that are much worse.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 18 January 2024 15:39 (one year ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 19 January 2024 00:01 (one year ago)

Very surprising result!

Chris L, Friday, 19 January 2024 12:41 (one year ago)

Great 1-2. (Mine reversed.) Surprised The Sopranos is so low. Can't read to much into board polls as representative of anything out there (I don't think), but I thought it was Mad Men that's fallen out of favour more than The Sopranos.

clemenza, Friday, 19 January 2024 13:50 (one year ago)

I cant fault that top 5 but I am surprised Larry Sanders is at the top

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 19 January 2024 13:53 (one year ago)

xp I don't think either have fallen out of favor really, especially if the number of still-ongoing memes are a barometer (and I think they are).

Chris L, Friday, 19 January 2024 14:01 (one year ago)

Somehow I forgot to vote, so add one for SCTV. It looks wrong sitting there at the bottom of the poll.

Josefa, Friday, 19 January 2024 14:09 (one year ago)

Look, I like On Cinema well enough, but if that deserved 2 votes and SCTV, Late Night with David Letterman, Jeopardy and The Daily Show all nothing, then I say two of you are wrong.

badpee pooper (Eric H.), Friday, 19 January 2024 14:14 (one year ago)

Lodge 49 mentioned above is a blind spot for me, as are the following I noticed while looking up shows from each year:

The Comeback (2005)
Terriers (2010)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995 -- have seen 2 episodes)

Chris L, Friday, 19 January 2024 14:38 (one year ago)

just a really high quality list tbf

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Friday, 19 January 2024 14:38 (one year ago)

Also, the toughest choice was between MST3K and Kids in the Hall for 1988.

Chris L, Friday, 19 January 2024 14:40 (one year ago)
