this is such a sad story but i'm going to tell it. i came home one day and my dad had been home alone and i asked him what he had eaten and he said a peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwich and i gagged a little and thought he was starting to lose it and was afraid people would find out that he was surviving on scraps when he wasn't with us but then he did it again weeks later and apparently he has been eating them since the 30s when they were supposedly some sort of depression-era staple and i had never heard of such a thing and i am so glad that he didn't raise me eating them. i googled and apparently there is a wacky online resurgence of this sandwich and i guess i can kinda see it but yuck for some reason.

scott seward, Monday, 29 January 2024 03:37 (one year ago)

peanut butter bcz the original is still the best. kudos to G.W. Carver; maybe he didn't invent it, but he popularized it.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 29 January 2024 03:42 (one year ago)

Write-in for sunbutter, my preferred addition for oatmeal.

Kim Kimberly, Monday, 29 January 2024 03:44 (one year ago)

Almond but I don’t really eat any of them.

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 29 January 2024 03:47 (one year ago)

Of these options i have only tried peanut and cashew, peanut butter is amazing and very versatile and great in all kinds of recipes and i had a favorite parlor trick which involved covering my forearm in it and letting my dog lick it off.

I had a cocktail with peanut butter in it once! it was called Elvis is Dead and it was actually good.

I did not enjoy cashew butter.

Have heard macadamia nut butter is amazing.

Went through a phase of eating raw coconut butter a lot but it honestly pales next to peanut butter.

Deflatormouse, Monday, 29 January 2024 03:56 (one year ago)

Yeah peanut butter is awesome and cheap... I eat some every day.

Kim Kimberly, Monday, 29 January 2024 04:00 (one year ago)

awesome and cheap

this really gets to the heart of the matter, i feel.

Macadamia and hazelnut butter sound unspeakably luxurious (and expensive, I assume).

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 29 January 2024 15:57 (one year ago)

Chunky or smooth peanut butter? Chunky, say I.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 29 January 2024 15:59 (one year ago)

I rationed a tiny thimble sized jar of lilikoi macadamia nut butter for over two years.
But hazelnut butter is super cheap if you can somehow extract the chocolate from nutella, which I do by eating it.

Philip Nunez, Monday, 29 January 2024 16:02 (one year ago)

macadamia nut butter isn't that much at my organic grocery store, like 6.99 for .. i don't know how many ounces, maybe a little less in volume than your medium size container of skippy. not bad for a little shot of luxury in the morning smoothie for 10 days or so.

i'm noticing that 'good' peanut butter is not significantly cheaper than almond butter. i would like to try walnut butter and pistachio butter. i hope pistachio butter is green.

ꙮ (map), Monday, 29 January 2024 16:05 (one year ago)

Fundamentally if you have any kind of blender, you can grind your own, and they'll probably taste much fresher, though if you're not into chunky, you might be blending for a while...

Philip Nunez, Monday, 29 January 2024 16:26 (one year ago)

The PB and Mayo would also sometimes include pickles. I never liked them but my mom would eat them. I know the pB and pickle was one my grand dad used to make as they were sandwiches they could take in the field in the summer that would not go bad.

The Artist formerly known as Earlnash, Monday, 29 January 2024 19:02 (one year ago)

i saw a recipe for PB & M and it was just peanut butter, mayo, and cheese on top!

scott seward, Monday, 29 January 2024 19:28 (one year ago)

and then just add bacon and banana and you are elvis.

I'll take this opportunity to suggest everyone try the peanut butter/pickles/Sriracha sandwich. Probably good with other butters too!

Is hazelnut butter distinct from Nutella?

the new drip king (DJP), Monday, 29 January 2024 21:32 (one year ago)

i'm guessing its less sweet since nutella is probably half sugar. but probably depends on the brand.

scott seward, Monday, 29 January 2024 22:42 (one year ago)

Yep

The main ingredients of Nutella are sugar and palm oil (greater than 50%). It also contains hazelnut at 13%

Kim Kimberly, Monday, 29 January 2024 22:46 (one year ago)

And cocoa and milk. Always thought of Nutella more as a chocolate spread with a little hazelnut tbh

Deflatormouse, Monday, 29 January 2024 23:00 (one year ago)

'acorn butter'? is this a commercially available product?

I had the mandatory california elementary school thing where we attempted to render acorns edible, and while it's possible and people have obv done it for thousands of years, it's kind of a hassle

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 00:06 (one year ago)

peanut butter 4 life

almond butter is nice but too spendy & not nearly as comforting

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 30 January 2024 00:13 (one year ago)

I voted for macadamia (aspirationally, I've never had it) because it sounds like it'd be great. I like almond more than peanut, and I think I've had cashew but don't remember.

nickn, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 00:28 (one year ago)

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 00:41 (one year ago)

Peanut. Crunchy. The kind with peanuts & salt as the only ingredients.

ian, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 01:10 (one year ago)

pb is pretty unfuckwithable but i voted cashew, in honor of a tiny jar i was gifted once which tasted amazing. then i splurged and bought one for myself and it was very ew, not very cash. close comparison of the respective jars proved that the one that tasted good had sugar in it, go figure!

when i have too many nuts on hand, in conjunction with too much time and ambition, i'll whip up a nut butter in my teensy tiny food processor and it always takes a thousand years to reach a sufficiently buttery state, but the results can be dope as hell. i have a little coconut almond butter left from last time which is, imho, a+++++ (comprising blanched & toasted almonds, unsweetened coconut flakes, bit of virgin coconut oil, bit of date molasses, and a dash of salt)

i've made a reasonable nutella too, w/ skinned & toasted hazelnuts, dark cocoa powder, date molasses again, some oil i can't remember?, vanilla, & salt

nuts are so good

(the date molasses is for my guy who can't with processed sugar. it's just goo, made from dates)

what followed the axes was just the beginning (cat), Tuesday, 30 January 2024 04:23 (one year ago)

i use dates straight up as a sweetener in smoothies.

visiting, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 04:35 (one year ago)

straight up dates usually leave me with date bits (due to weak sad cheap low energy blending tech)

It kinda makes me sad that i had to send my kids w sunflower butter sandwiches instead of peanut butter through their childhood on account of possible classmate allergies.

Certainly I get that peanut allergies can be for real, but also sad that I had to substitute for something so inferior.

fajita seas, Friday, 2 February 2024 01:41 (one year ago)

I don’t think a food has gone from “oh what an interesting flavor” to “GOD I HATE IT” faster for me than sunflower butter

the new drip king (DJP), Friday, 2 February 2024 13:43 (one year ago)

Mr Price started getting meridian products in cheap last year so got to try a few of their alternatives. Definitely almond, one darker brown or something mixed with cocoa that may come to me later. Also really enjoyed their mincemeat pie filling as a spread with peanut butter.

Also Lidl started selling cashew nut butter which i really enjoyed.

Stevo, Friday, 2 February 2024 14:01 (one year ago)

nut butter with cocoa was hazelnut, so a healthier nutella roughly. I like those meridian lines so shame they stopped being around so cheap.

Stevo, Friday, 2 February 2024 17:49 (one year ago)

Write-in for sunbutter, my preferred addition for oatmeal.

If this is the same as sunflower seed butter, I'll second this. (Also, it's fun to bake with because it'll turn green without any taste weirdness.)

awesome and cheap

Thirded. Plain old PB is just great, I've been on a PB kick since it's so much more affordable than the alternatives.

Such as almond butter, which is amazing with its rich smoky flavor. The biggest downside, of course, is that it's so expensive.

Temple of Selune Gomez (Leee), Friday, 2 February 2024 20:35 (one year ago)

you can stretch out almond butter by mixing with PB. and maybe chocolate chips and toffee chips. and caramel chunks. and whole candy bars.

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 3 February 2024 02:10 (one year ago)

For several years on most days after school I'd come home, make a piece of toast and slather it with peanut butter. I only stopped when my older brother started teasing me mercilessly in front of his friends as "peanut butter brother".

Yeah, your "arm". Sure. I knew a kid in high school...

Sometimes when I'm not hungry I'll just have one of those little snack-sized cups of peanut butter (creamy Jif) and a Cosmic Crisp apple (the absolute best apple in the universe; crunchy and not too sweet and incredibly juicy, like fill-your-whole-mouth-with-juice-with-one-bite) for dinner.

Tahuti Watches L&O:SVU Reruns Without His Ape (unperson), Saturday, 3 February 2024 02:47 (one year ago)

Tahini is made from sesame seeds, not sunflower seeds.

nickn, Saturday, 3 February 2024 03:36 (one year ago)

I know! sorry for being unclear, my point was "seed butter"

dead precedents (sleeve), Saturday, 3 February 2024 03:57 (one year ago)

There is a nut butter vendor at my farmers' market and I can vouch for pistachio, walnut, and pecan butter (all $$ but pistachio most $$$).

I make the world's most bougie PB&J: pistachio butter with this amazing vanilla nectarine jam on charcoal sourdough. It is so fucking good.

Pistachio butter is not, alas, green.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 3 February 2024 04:08 (one year ago)

Tahini is super versatile, especially for vegan substitions, and if you've had hummus, you've had tahini. I've even used it as a spread in lieu of nut butter, and despite a slight bitterness, it works well.

Dismissing sunflower seed butter is idk kinda weird, because it tastes like a less stellar almond butter.

Temple of Selune Gomez (Leee), Saturday, 3 February 2024 04:45 (one year ago)

nut better

Sassy Boutonnière (ledriver), Saturday, 3 February 2024 08:09 (one year ago)

i bought some peanut butter sans salt and it was -- if i may be so graphic -- disgusting. i had to salt everything i put it on because without salt, ground peanuts taste like cement. i can live without sugar but absolutely not without salt.

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Saturday, 3 February 2024 15:45 (one year ago)

Note to self, almond butter tastes like death; thanks for the heads up

the new drip king (DJP), Sunday, 4 February 2024 18:25 (one year ago)

Tahini is delicious on toasted wheat or other whole-grain bread, just fwiw. You can't sub it for peanut butter just willy-nilly, but it's pretty versatile.
