Although I am not even sure it started life with that title.

To bring it full circle, thinking about The Jud Strunk Show, which turns out to have been a summer replacement for The Dean Martin Comedy World. I have no recollection of it apart from the extended media blitz before its launch filled with a lot of ads with people saying "Who's Jud Strunk?" and him singing "Daisy A Day" week after week.

S: Fernwood 2 Night

Oh, really, it was? Hadn’t remembered.

We discussed The Manhattan Transfer show on another thread once, so I won’t rehash.

Fernwood 2 Night was the summer replacement for Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, which upon its return was known as Forever Fernwood.

?: Shields and Yarnell. Watched it, can’t remember how good it was.

SCTV Network 90 (the NBC version of SCTV) was basically one of these when it first appeared, replacing The Midnight Special, although the latter never returned.

Heh. I vaguely remember watching it and enjoying it somewhat. More than it’s time slot rival Laverne & Shirley, which I never really cottoned to.

Hated this show, in particular his signature song, “Spiders and Snakes,” although in later life I’ve come to grudgingly appreciate Jim’s pickin’ and a-grinnin’ prowess.

The Starland Vocal Band Show, from the same summer as Shields and Yarnell (1977). Dave Lettterman wrote for it and appeared on it. Pretty confident that I never watched this.

Was trying to bring that one up to the surface. I definitely watched it, think I had a crush on one of the band members, but it was pretty terrible, maybe more terrible than the terrible in a different way but occuping similar brain space Pink Lady and Jeff.

S (maybe): The Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour

A summer replacement series hosted by muppet Rowlf the Hound. Show regulars were the singing Doodletown Pipers plus the comedy team of Jack Burns and Avery Schreiber

There was a certainly recycling ecosystem at work here, similar to the one in which the same actresses appeared on Star Trek:TOS, Mannix and Hawaii Five-0, as Josefa can attest, in which the same actors would appear in different summer replacements series, perhaps as a warm-up for their own such series, like Jud Strunk on The Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour.

IMDB says John Belushi stole Avery Schreiber's Second City Samurai routine.

There out to be a sub-category for shows that lasted about as long as a summer replacement series, such as Pink Lady and Jeff, or the Paul Sorvino vehicle We'll Get By.

Heh, Teresa Graves was on some of these shows as part of the road that eventually led to Get Christie Love!

Was this even a phenomenon after say the early ‘80s? Can’t readily think of later examples.

Ah, The Golddiggers had their own summer replacement show for The Dean Martin Show for three seasons.

There is definitely some kind of La Jetée time-dilation in effect here, what with some of these summer replacement series seemingly running for an eternity in memory.

There would be different original series that would air in the summer, but -- between the rise of Reality TV and Fox blurring the lines of when proper TV could premiere by debuting a teaser run of The OC in summer of 2003 -- that went away.

Marty Feldman was on The Golddiggers show since it was shot in London to save a few bucks, which ultimately led to his own short-run show The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine, which was not quite a summer replacement.

Could have sworn Helen Reddy's show lasted longer.

I must have heard "Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)" dozens of times during those eight episodes that summer.

Was trying to recall The Hudson Brothers, had forgotten about their timeslot switcheroo.

I was a big fan of the Hudson Brothers at age 6 but only of their Saturday morning “Razzle Dazzle” incarnation.

Almost sure I watched the Tony Orlando and Dawn one.

Joey and Dad sounds amazing. Unfortunately missed that one.

Tony Orlando and Dawn became a "real" show and ran for three seasons I think.

Sort of remember Joey and Dad. Would like to think Morbs would have remembered it. I still laugh to myself about something he once said about Joey.

Doodletown Pipers wiki page mentions that they also appeared on a Carpenters summer replacement show called Make Your Own Kind of Music.

I have no real recollection of this show, especially the alphabet gimmick.

WOW!! Now that's the kind of lame-ass variety show I spent my late teenage years avoiding like the plague!

lol, I had no idea so many '70s AM gold one-hit wonders had their own attendant short-lived variety series. Thank you for this eye-opening journey.

It looks like it may have dropped in spring rather than summer, but I will nonetheless use this space continue my campaign to spread awareness of The Hanna Barbera Happy Hour, which is one of the most profound examples of coke psychosis I've ever seen on network television.
