I would watch that if that were recut as a horror trailer which I guess on some level it already is?

Aside from everything else I don't think I can handle JLD being sincere (much less maudlin).

Her going full Veep on a creepy death bird would be great! Maybe the trailer is a fake-out?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 17:12 (one year ago)

she's also in the marvel thunderbolts movie, which also seems like a bad fit. though a marvel movie in 2025 is probably a bad fit for everyone.

She’s already been in about 5 marvel projects

A So-Called Pulitzer price winner (President Keyes), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 17:20 (one year ago)

how did that go

This looks like a version of something that could work in the right hands, but those hands would have figured out a way to avoid the shitty CGI.

What will it take for directors to realize that CGI is almost always terrible, just tell me what it will take and I will do it

Send them a death bird with the message

i think she could be good in the right oscar-bait dirty fingernails role. she wasn't great in that nicole holofcener dramedy that i watched. not the one with tony soprano. the other one. david cross was in it.

scott seward, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 18:32 (one year ago)

don't get me wrong: as far as television goes, there are few people as talented in that medium as JL-D. she can make funny out of thin air.

scott seward, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 18:34 (one year ago)

This was the deathbird that I was picturing before watching the trailer, would have been an improvement (iykyk)

it just looks really fucking sad to me

I liked both of these movies. But I'm a writer whose spouse does not read his books, so I was the perfect audience for the most recent one (You Hurt My Feelings — JLD plays an author who overhears her husband shit-talking her new book and spirals).

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 18:48 (one year ago)

yeah I agree with unperson, You Hurt My Feelings was really good.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 19:25 (one year ago)

eight months pass...

I took the hit for the team and watched Tuesday last night.

If, say, imperial phase Studio Ghibli had filmed the exact same screenplay, we would probably be talking about Tuesday as some kind of bonkers, extraordinary masterpiece. I wished the film leaned more into its odd magical-realism. I mean if you're going to swing hard, just really just go for it. There are zombie cows, a talking dog head, JL-D's cancer daughter & the bird vaping it up and singing along to Ice Cube, miniature rat bishops, even a scene where JL-D bludgeons, burns, and then eats the physical incarnation of Death, but all the connective tissue to keep all that together is a total misfire. The bird is fine, but relationships between the humans grate hard.

I was reminded of a deep discussion I had in the wake of Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence. I had similar issues: all over the place tonally, trying too hard to be profound, characters sermonizing instead of talking. My friend who loved it stopped me right there: "you'll never connect with it because you've never lost a child." IMDB/Letterboxd reviews for Tuesday break similarly - one group emotionally wrecked by a weirdly beautiful allegory, another who think it's the worst movie they've ever seen. I can't recommend it but fwiw I did go the distance. Don't assume that is a tacit recommedation.
