FAP West Coast Xmas : SoCal, Bay Area, and... Carson City?

So, here is my tentative plan for late December. I'm driving down to see my folks for a coupla days in Los Angeles, the 23rd, the 24th, and probably the 25th.

Since I dread taking the same way back from a long distance place that I took to get there initially, and since I've never explored the inner California, northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe area, I want to slightly detour over that way on my way down. Any recommendations? Carson City, Reno, Fresno, Chico, Yosemite, etc?

So, I'll be in LA or Orange County or maybe San Diego most of the week of Xmas, and then plan to be in the Bay Area by the weekend.. 27th - 29th. And I finally want to catch you guys this time. So, will you be around? Can this be a go?

And of course, anybody in Portland, Olympia, Eugene, on the 20th, 21st.. or alternately the 30th or 31st?

Reno roolz! It's got this old, seedy quality to it that nu-Vegas can't even come close to.

DB, try and swing by to see me in Carmel on the way to the Bay Area if possible, I'll be there during the stretch you're in SoCal and won't be heading back until the 28th. Reno is worth a stop through and the area around Tahoe is truly beautiful, but check ahead on traffic conditions (assuming there's actually some snow...).

I wanted to do a coastal thing on the way up anyway... as in Hwy 1, weather permitting. And I was planning on stopping by in Carmel, but I wasn't sure when you'd be there. But now I know!

Darn, I'm going to back to CT/NY/MA/RI from the 22nd till New Year's Day. I'm disappointed.

Anyway, I'd second Geeta's recommendation of Reno. I wish I'd explored it a bit more the one time I was there. And go to Yosemite! I'm surprised you've never been there, I thought everyone who grew up in Southern California had been there at least once. It's one of the most beautiful places on earth. I've always wanted to visit over the holidays, too. You might need chains for your tires, though.

Fresno has big thrift shops.

Geeta's SOOOOOO OTM. Reno's a TOTAL skanky dive, it's EXACTLY what you imagine it should be like (not all Disneyland-y like Vegas)!

I missed this completely a few days ago. I'm not sure about Christmas plans (could be NYC or overseas - who knows). But I'll be around ilxor until then, so...
