In which we discuss the other movie happening this season, which is low key really good.

Love the cast and REALLY loved how the truck mounted corkscrews turned into their own special version of chekhov’s gun at the very very end.

Also weather nerds are the best kind of nerds, fight me
― trm (tombotomod), Monday, 29 July 2024 02:33 (nine months ago)
Watched the original for the first time this afternoon, 99% dope 1% score that sounds like the national beef commercial from the ‘90s.

Aaron Copland's greatest legacy
― jaymc, Monday, 29 July 2024 03:08 (nine months ago)
this movie was completely hilarious and i loved it
― Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 29 July 2024 03:11 (nine months ago)
I like how chaste the new one is
― Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 29 July 2024 03:20 (nine months ago)
They should've smooched at least.
― jaymc, Monday, 29 July 2024 03:24 (nine months ago)
this is kind of a niche thing but i like how the lead character's name is "kate" and people are always yelling "KATE" at her and every time i would react like they were yelling my name, which they were, because my name is Kate
i don't think i've ever had that experience seeing a movie in the theater before
-
they shouldn't have smooched but the guy should have taken his shirt off. when you have a movie with a plot like that the guy needs to take his shirt off.
― Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 29 July 2024 03:26 (nine months ago)
He doesn't take his shirt off? I thought Glenn Powell was contractually obligated to remove his shirt.
― the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 29 July 2024 09:25 (nine months ago)
he does wear a tight white t-shirt in a rainstorm tbf
― jaymc, Monday, 29 July 2024 14:10 (nine months ago)
That takes care of that
(I find Glenn Powell as hot as a frozen pizza)
― the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 29 July 2024 14:13 (nine months ago)
I liked it. I liked the original! Wish both Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton had a longer list of top-billed roles

I saw the lack of kiss as an homage to classic ending of Big Trouble in Little China where Jack Burton declines to kiss Gracie Law

Also weather nerds are the best kind of nerds
Especially in the first movie, which also has rival evil weather nerds in black trucks getting their comeuppance.
― Hideous Lump, Monday, 29 July 2024 17:21 (nine months ago)
from the vulture article: “The advice I was given that really swayed me was our editor, Terry, telling me, ‘It’s better to leave an audience wanting than to leave them overfilled,’”
yeah, you don't want the audience for TWISTER PART 2: MORE & BIGGER TWISTERS thinking you went over-the-top or anything

― Hideous Lump
i haven't seen the first movie but this movie has a (incredibly obvious) hallmark movie twist on that plot
i don't find glenn powell hot specifically, it's just about the context, the context just seems to cry out for it
there's one character in the film i'd characterize as a "weather nerd", the rest of them are just weather witches and wizards pretending like they're doing science
which for the record i am totally cool with. it's a fantasy romance film about tornadoes.
― Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 29 July 2024 18:27 (nine months ago)
so dumb so charming so fun
felt like this nailed exactly where it was aiming
so LOUD

― tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 30 July 2024 23:09 (nine months ago)
but pls these are not reasons to not go and watch and enjoy this movie
nb properly proper main female lead role and no need to make a show of it, our two guys left helping out at the theatre
also im pretty sure every guy with more than five lines fell completely in love with her which was nice, i mean this movie has everyone behave _normally_ around the two incredibly goodlooking main stars which i felt was intentionally
nbb irish actor in this (the whisked away boyfriend) is gonna be huge
― tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 30 July 2024 23:12 (nine months ago)
I am so glad you enjoyed this

sound design was so crucial and they nailed it, i felt crushed into my seat for about half the running time

jami getz tho yowza
― tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Friday, 2 August 2024 20:26 (nine months ago)
Exhausting, of course, but basically okay. Really liked the lead actress, who I've never seen before. Major sin: wasting two people from two of my favourite works of art this century (Kiernan Shipka from Mad Men, Sasha Lane from American Honey). "Really--you're going to kill me off in the first 15 minutes? Don't you know I'm Sally Draper?" A couple of unintentional laughs, e.g. the first time Glen Powell gets serious and starts talking science.
― clemenza, Friday, 6 September 2024 20:00 (eight months ago)
all the laughs in this are intentional
― moral ziosk (geoffreyess), Friday, 6 September 2024 22:34 (eight months ago)
id agree with that
― tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Friday, 6 September 2024 22:43 (eight months ago)
Powell's swagger? Suited the character, but I didn't actually laugh--not a fan. I did like a couple of the songs, none of which I knew.
