Headline from the often quite Republican-friendly Politico this morning:

"Trump and his allies had a plan for how to hit Harris. Then he opened his mouth."

The one upside to Trump’s racist tirades: the response from grassroots donors. As of this hour $23,961,076 has been raised through ActBlue today, the largest fundraising day in the past week. Donations began spiking immediately following Trump’s NABJ interview.

Granted but that’s for a position that itself will be voted on in November; the current guy will oversee things then.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 August 2024 14:03 (one year ago)

Otm I always tell my friends that if you can get 20 people to show up at a meeting with a coherent message — and avoid just yelling and calling people idiots (however tempting it may be) — you can have more impact than you’d think. Not that getting 20 people to do anything is easy.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 1 August 2024 14:04 (one year ago)

Separately, from the NYT about that book the Heritage/Project 2025 guy that Vance wrote the foreword for:

But in recent weeks, Mr. Roberts’s publisher, Broadside Books, a conservative imprint of Harper Collins, pulled offline a digital advance copy of the book that had been available for download for book reviewers and booksellers, and the book’s publication may be delayed.

Broadside has also dropped the original subtitle, “Burning Down Washington to Save America,” and cover art featuring a charred match, and has toned down similarly incendiary promotional language for the book.

Ms. Bonham said the changes were made at Heritage’s request after the attempted assassination of Mr. Trump on July 13, though they had been discussed earlier.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 August 2024 14:07 (one year ago)

Wow, that wouldn’t have been a provocative book cover at all

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 1 August 2024 14:13 (one year ago)

JD Vance was the first VP nominee to have a negative net favorability coming out of his party's convention... It's only gotten worse for him.

Given how Vance has dominated news cycles, it is, at this point, the worst VP pick since Eagleton in 1972... pic.twitter.com/GVanVIyHO6

Wild that Trump and supporters are doubling down on the race stuff, trying to "prove" that Harris has claimed Indian heritage in the past, as though she is somehow now trying to cover it up. Weird stuff!

jaymc, Thursday, 1 August 2024 15:04 (one year ago)

its their fucked-up racist version of calling people "weird".

scott seward, Thursday, 1 August 2024 15:09 (one year ago)

also this post should be seen from the other thread in case people missed it because its really really true:

They know at some level that performing a hostile takeover of someone’s identity is the quintessential act of domination by the slaver. Denying a person of their name , their social status, their kinship ties — these are signature moves of the Virginia plantation owner, and went hand-in-hand with ownership, droit de seigneur, the whole nine. The fact that a certain version of this tactic has been deployed against the occasional white individual (e.g., E Warren) doesn’t contradict this : tactics that have been perfected in the plantation can be deployed elsewhere: on the reservation, in the prisons, at the border, and so on. But that’s what I see, beneath the crude political calculations: a will to dominate that is unquenchable.

re KOSA, sounds like a combination of tech companies and ACLU getting organized to fight and persuading some conservative groups that it could be used against them too (e.g. to censor anti-vax content as harmful to children).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 August 2024 16:02 (one year ago)

people really shouldnt be giving money to presidential campaigns

in this era of ActBlue and crowdfunding of campaigns, a few small donations are OK. it lets the party understand how valuable it is to deliver policies that are broadly popular with voters, as opposed to concentrating all their efforts courting investment bankers and CEOs. but we give almost exclusively to local candidates and issues. nothing to Harris, yet, since she's raking it in so fast already.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 1 August 2024 16:08 (one year ago)

What's really galling about the NYT on KOSA is I did a quick search of their editorials and can't find that they've even mentioned it, despite it obviously being a vehicle for censorship. The kind of thing the press is supposed to be against as a first principle. (Not that I expect great things from the NYT opinion department, but that oughta be a no-brainer.)

Hours before the rally, Trump sent supporters a fundraising email promising “an EARTH-SHATTERING announcement that blows this race wide open”.

“It’ll strike FEAR into the hearts of our DEEP STATE ENEMIES. It’ll force the Fake News Media to kick their propaganda machine into OVERDRIVE. It’ll send Comrade Kamala begging for massive checks from the liberal billionaire class,” he promised.

jaymc, Saturday, 31 August 2024 04:08 (eleven months ago)

i read the thread and i’m afraid i have to disagree; it’s yet another case where he is annoying. dana bash’s questions were honestly fine. asking “how would you respond to [thing republicans have been saying about you]?” is fair. after all that’s who they’re running against. voters at town halls have a reputation for asking dumb questions, not thoughtful substantive policy questions. and even if someone did ask them about policy details, it’s pretty clear harris and walz would give evasive and vague answers, cause they largely don’t have a policy plan.. and they don’t really have to—which is good for them in terms of electability, most policies are pretty divisive and taking a side turns the haters against you—because republicans are themselves completely vacuous morons on policy and have completely ceded the topic. dr vox wants the media to be the opposition he wishes republicans were, or that a dem primary wouldve provided. but that’s not the game. there’s no reason to have a one sided dialogue where one team wonks out on policy while the other side spouts complete gibberish, imo they’re smart not to fall into that trap

That Soriano piece is overall very otm, except it overlooks the fact that the armed services draw their ranks from the same society that gave Trump more than 74 million votes in the 2020 election, so that rage at & disgust with Trump is not quite as universal among them as he would like to think. There's a noteworthy segment of the military that would love an authoritarian strongman as president and see Trump as their best chance of getting one, even if he is something of an idiot.
