Alacaraz and now Djoko out. This is a good opportunity for er, Sinner.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 31 August 2024 05:35 (eight months ago)

For some reason, I occasionally wake up during the night session in New York, at crucial moments. It's usually been Federer (double mp down to Monfils in 2014 qf, the late period losses to Millman and Dimitrov). This morning I was awake at 4:35am, just in time for the Popyrin double-break in set 4. Squinting at a score app in the dark (is that 30 or 40? Am I actually awake?), it's a great way to start the day.

Last time we had a year without a Big Three Slam win: 2002. Johansson, Costa, Hewitt, Sampras. A lifetime ago.

My concern about that side of the draw: Zverev. (And Etcheverry really could've beaten him last night).

Michael Jones, Saturday, 31 August 2024 09:44 (eight months ago)

Zverev is just the kind of player that would've had no chance when the Big Three were ruling, and it would've been delicious.

When was the last time a male player did three straight bagels in a Slam? De Minaur looking to buy a stake in Iga's bakery.

I'm not sure I can call any of the men's qf. There are obviously favourites based on seeding, but counterbalanced by other factors.
I don't love having the billionaire kids still in the women's draw. Surprised this is Badosa's 2nd ever GS qf, and she only has four career titles. She's a former #2! It's my failing for not following WTA tour as closely as the ATP, but sometimes I wonder if the maths works differently over there :)

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 09:48 (eight months ago)

good Q. close last year US Open, medvedev beat atilla balazs 1-1-0. likely would have to be over two matches cuz its reasonably likely if you've been double bageled you may retire before the next bagel completes

for billionaire kids, navarro and pegula seem to be abt as grounded ppl as possible, i dont count their privilege against them

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 13:29 (eight months ago)

not sure if this is most recent but
1993 french open rd 2

S Bruguera 6 6 6
T Champion 0 0 0

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 13:35 (eight months ago)

xp Badosa's had a similar career arc to Svitolina: Solid week-in, week-out player, but with an underwhelming record in the slams. Svitolina eventually started playing deeper into the majors on a more consistent basis, but Badosa's had some unfortunate injuries and has never gotten that same momentum. Maybe this turns in thag direction for her.

Agree that Navarro and especially Pegula seem as grounded as could be expected of someone with their privileges. They're both a far sight from Coco Vandeweghe, who was just heinous on and off court.

Sabalenka's looking ferocious this summer. Among the women remaining, I have a hard time picking against her.

Weirdly finding myself rooting for Meddy on the men's side, though "anyone but Zverev" among those left is also fine. I didn't think Alcaraz would win the title based on form, but I'm still shocked he went out as early as r2. Sinner doesn't seem to have let the doping story get into his head the way I thought it might.

jon_oh, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:30 (eight months ago)

this match vs navarro is badosa in a nutshell.. she is such a confidence player.. looks strong when playing well, sulks when playing bad

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 17:24 (eight months ago)

from 5-1 up in set 2, badosa won 5 more pts the rest of the match

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 17:28 (eight months ago)

goodbye you skarsgard-looking bastard!

hott ogo (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 21:22 (eight months ago)

so a finalist will be one of

grigor
tiafoe

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 21:23 (eight months ago)

Great stuff!

wait whaaaaaaaat omg

laughter is the best weapon (DJP), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 21:29 (eight months ago)

Tiafoe is looking sharp right now. It's fun to see him be this consistent, he's always been capable of good-to-great play, just not reliably enough.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 4 September 2024 01:56 (eight months ago)

Looks like Zheng was the latest victim of shitty scheduling at slams, though its hard to see how anyone beats Saba until she meets Swiatek in the final.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 09:03 (eight months ago)

Did laugh at this from Tiafoe. Its an excellent opportunity as Sinner or Med could be beatable on their day:

"“It’s only a matter of time,” Tiafoe said. “You put yourself in positions, it’s only a matter of time, and the game is open. It’s not like it once was where you make quarter-finals, you play Rafa, and you’re looking at flights. That’s just the reality"

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 09:05 (eight months ago)

muchova cruising

her skirt kinda looks like a trash bag tho

mookieproof, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 16:46 (eight months ago)

Muchova isn't even 100℅ fit, apparently

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 17:39 (eight months ago)

Draper into the semis, Raducanuing it so far.

Thoughts turn to... Kyle Edmund, AO semifinalist 2018. And Edmund (#452) gets a rematch with Cilic (#1082) tomorrow in a Challenger in Cassis.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 20:16 (eight months ago)

i guess pegula had no choice about being a nepo baby, and despite her advantages, it takes a lot to become a top-ten player in the world

still not rooting for her tho. go muchova

mookieproof, Thursday, 5 September 2024 01:34 (eight months ago)

I like Pegula partly because her mom (who had the stroke) is my age and grew up outside Rochester like me. Maybe we were in Model U.N. together, who knows. Also, go Bills. (But OK, there is the fracking, yes.)

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 5 September 2024 02:42 (eight months ago)

No big issues with nepo babies in tennis. You are not going to become much of a player, nevermind win a slam, unless you are really really good.

But I almost always back Czech players. Love them.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 5 September 2024 08:17 (eight months ago)

You are not going to become much of a player, nevermind win a slam, unless you are really really good.

True of course, but it's about opportunities and being allowed to develop. Pegula didn't crack the top 100 until she was 25. Most players can barely make a living playing WTA125 and below, but she had that cushion and could stick around, and work with great coaches. I guess the flipside of that is: why bother to improve if you don't need the money? It wouldn't be surprising to see the rich kids just drift around the 300s and then go do something else. So, yeah, there's definitely something special there with these two, to achieve what they have.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 5 September 2024 09:37 (eight months ago)

Yeah there are real country club origins to tennis so I am sure plwnty of rich kids try it out.

Kinda feel that if you show some talent players in all four grand slam holding countries (plus another 20 or so around the world) there is an infrastructure set-up that will pick up and invest in talent for a while. Tennis, like most sports, needs sone level of infrastructure to refine what a player shows.

But I haven't read enough on player journeys (sounds like a mixture of talent, sacrifice, luck, pushy families).

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 5 September 2024 09:59 (eight months ago)

impressive by navarro to make that match as close as it was; equally impressive by sabalenka for controlling the entire match and not cracking from 5-6 down second set

johnny crunch, Friday, 6 September 2024 01:07 (eight months ago)

Pegula on quite a roll after getting demolished in the first set.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Friday, 6 September 2024 02:57 (eight months ago)

dislike

mookieproof, Friday, 6 September 2024 02:59 (eight months ago)

She is playing like a demon, though

laughter is the best weapon (DJP), Friday, 6 September 2024 03:01 (eight months ago)

boo

mookieproof, Friday, 6 September 2024 03:24 (eight months ago)

That was an impressive win, but she seems like a long shot against Sabalenka.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Friday, 6 September 2024 03:33 (eight months ago)

Quite a test for Saba as the crowd can get to her at times, I think...that is Pegula's chance

xyzzzz__, Friday, 6 September 2024 10:14 (eight months ago)

Saw last night’s matches in person, my first US Open. Sabalenka looked incredible. Would have to favor her in the final. Pegula was hard to get a read on - I thought Muchová made more astounding plays but Pergula seemed to wear her down in some way.

Josefa, Friday, 6 September 2024 21:25 (eight months ago)

johnny crunch, Saturday, 7 September 2024 21:18 (eight months ago)

props to sabalenka, she didnt serve very well today, pegula pushed her p hard

johnny crunch, Saturday, 7 September 2024 22:12 (eight months ago)

And Edmund (#452) gets a rematch with Cilic (#1082) tomorrow in a Challenger in Cassis.

gasquet has taken the cassis title!

meanwhile in queens, sinner never looked bothered, not even when down for a bit in the 3rd. onto indoors!

andrew m., Monday, 9 September 2024 14:41 (eight months ago)

So the year ends with 2 majors each for Sinner (age 23) and Alcaraz (age 21). Squarely into a new mens' era here.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Monday, 9 September 2024 15:07 (eight months ago)

Here’s hoping Djokovic never wins another Slam

laughter is the best weapon (DJP), Monday, 9 September 2024 15:13 (eight months ago)

Djoko might get to a final next year but that's pretty much it for that lot xp

xyzzzz__, Monday, 9 September 2024 15:15 (eight months ago)

need that sinner vs. alcaraz major final expeditiously (hoping wimbledon, but any will do)

hott ogo (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 September 2024 15:36 (eight months ago)

djokovic has been talking about retiring, and while i don't believe him, if he has a successful aussie run, he might want to go out on top

hott ogo (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 September 2024 15:37 (eight months ago)

So the year ends with 2 majors each for Sinner (age 23) and Alcaraz (age 21). Squarely into a new mens' era here.

First year since 2002 that Roger, Rafa or Djokovic didn’t win at least one major, which is basically Sinner and Carlos’ entire lives.

mizzell, Monday, 9 September 2024 16:41 (eight months ago)

Current entirely fictitious and repulsive talking anti-immigrant point being circulated by people including Elon and Jim Jordan is that Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, are eating good honest white Americans' pet cats and dogs.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Monday, 9 September 2024 16:57 (eight months ago)

lol wrong thread!

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Monday, 9 September 2024 16:57 (eight months ago)

lol, it was fun reading that sentence and clinging to the assumption that it was going to come around to relevance somehow, i must say.

alpine static, Monday, 9 September 2024 17:37 (eight months ago)

Yeah I was like “did someone interview Coco Vandeweghe”

laughter is the best weapon (DJP), Monday, 9 September 2024 19:16 (eight months ago)

lol well Springfield’s only 80 miles from Cincinnati, somebody could’ve snuck up for a snack during the tourney.
