hey it's the summer hols and I was bored

I used the dog latin top50 albums rules - i.e. pretended I had no access to the internet, no looking stuff up on letterboxd, no looking at my collection (which is elsewhere anyway) and to the greatest extent I could I tried to ignore any "gotta touch on every aspect of my taste" impulses, though obv they always sneak in

Some excellent stuff and a few to look up but this?

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring (Jackson, 2001)

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 11:05 (eleven months ago)

I grew up a Tolkien kid, it absolutely blew me away when I saw it, the magic still works on me. I don't have much of a theoretical defense of it as a Great Film (though as a po faced epic I'd argue it's better than many a Lean), but you gotta be honest.

ivy., Tuesday, 3 September 2024 11:16 (eleven months ago)

Fun list, my instinctive choice would be Harakiri or Oldboy but I'll mull it over before I vote for Oldboy

Yuwen Hu's army (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 11:40 (eleven months ago)

Oh I missed Late Spring now I'm really torn

Yuwen Hu's army (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 11:41 (eleven months ago)

I see Ozu, I vote Ozu.

glumdalclitch, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 11:49 (eleven months ago)

The Good The Bad & The Ugly

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 12:04 (eleven months ago)

A number of films I respect and find interesting, none that I really love.
It's Solaris over Pierrot le fou and , although I Vitelloni and The Leopard probably hold together better as coherent works.

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 14:19 (eleven months ago)

Matinee is super underrated, great to see it here

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 14:26 (eleven months ago)

the maltese falcon ahead of once upon a time in the west ahead of rio bravo but this is a really good list

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 14:30 (eleven months ago)

For me it’s between Singing in the Rain and Rio Bravo. I’ll probably vote Rio Bravo because I watched it more recently.

o. nate, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 14:51 (eleven months ago)

Singin' In The Rain... possibly.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 14:51 (eleven months ago)

wasn't gonna vote lotr but now i am

hott ogo (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 14:55 (eleven months ago)

I thought I was the only person on here who loved Comfort and Joy, so that gets my vote.

clemenza, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 14:59 (eleven months ago)

The Naked Gun 2 1/2 would comfortably sit betwixt Satantango and Pickpocket on my list ftr.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:00 (eleven months ago)

Went with Once Upon a Time in the West because it was already first on this list.

Got my hopes up for a real anti-choice with Confessions...of a Congressman.

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:09 (eleven months ago)

I’m not voting cos I haven’t seen enough to give an honest vote but Fellowship of the Ring is really good, best of the trilogy & also I have lots of recommendations based on the overlap in stuff we like

Going for.

Harakiri (Kobayashi, 1962)

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:16 (eleven months ago)

In these polls I vote for what I'd watch now or later today, so it's The Big City (Ray, 1963) or The Maltese Falcon (Huston, 1941).

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:16 (eleven months ago)

would happily have voted #1 for either also

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:34 (eleven months ago)

Hellzapoppin is 10/10

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 15:38 (eleven months ago)

I've thought about Pickpocket most days since I saw it (hyperbole, but not by much), but I think I'll go to Penda's Fen.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Tuesday, 3 September 2024 16:31 (eleven months ago)

Very tempted by Gremlins 2 as it is my perfect hangover film, but voting for Penda's Fen.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 3 September 2024 16:54 (eleven months ago)

Matinee is super underrated, great to see it here

A surprising amount of guests on Joe Dante's podcast bring it up to him, which is nice.

Went with Once Upon a Time in the West because it was already first on this list.

These are actually in order of preference so I agree!

also I have lots of recommendations based on the overlap in stuff we like

Fire away!

Singing' in the Rain also has the funniest line in history ("I don't have time to find out")

glumdalclitch, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 13:20 (eleven months ago)

"BBC psyop to make xyzz care about LOTR"

Its a v well made programme.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 13:49 (eleven months ago)

One more big Matinee fan here, although my favorite is either The Band Wagon or Singin’ in the Rain. Might throw the former a vote since the latter will obviously do well.

Pierre Moerlen’s Falun Gong (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 4 September 2024 13:59 (eleven months ago)

Singing' in the Rain also has the funniest line in history ("I don't have time to find out")

I thought you were gonna say my personal favourite, "ok, you're a cab".

Its a v well made programme.

Posted it especially because of Tolkien's contention that LOTR is about death and then busting out that Simone de Beauvoir snippet he kept in his wallet.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 15:54 (eleven months ago)

Ikiru for me. Towers above the rest

octobeard, Wednesday, 4 September 2024 16:14 (eleven months ago)

Instantly voted G2, had to laugh b/cit is also my second favorite movie.
Cool to see the love for Matinee (also my second favorite Joe Dante movie, when are we gonna have a Dante geekout session??)

Deflatormouse, Friday, 6 September 2024 04:03 (eleven months ago)

one month passes...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 8 October 2024 00:01 (ten months ago)

Maybe it's me, but the new season of Secrets of the Mogwai sucks a lot less than the first one.

Deflatormouse, Tuesday, 8 October 2024 01:44 (ten months ago)

Hmmm, I'm tempted. No Dante involvement except for signing off, right?

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 8 October 2024 09:01 (ten months ago)

System, Wednesday, 9 October 2024 00:01 (ten months ago)

Yeah basically.
My expectations are a lot lower this time, that could be it.
But at least one gremlin was randomly crushed by a falling anvil.

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 9 October 2024 00:25 (ten months ago)

unexpecteted winner!

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 9 October 2024 09:15 (ten months ago)

Pleasing victory

Yuwen Hu's army (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 October 2024 09:44 (ten months ago)

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 9 October 2024 09:46 (ten months ago)

Matinee is something else, yeah, it fits in with the Burton stuff going on at the time, imo.
