Watching the 2024 Emmy Awards and I don't know most of the shows.

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 September 2024 01:10 (eight months ago)

Seems like the white actors win the most this year so far in categories where there are some poc nominated .

I am done withoiiu...The Official Netflix Baby Reindeer Thread (with tons of spoilers - beware)

So Baby Reindeer has a thread of its own and I just saw the writer accept an award for the show. Maybe I should check it out. Sounds a bit weird

Good John Leguizamo speech

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 September 2024 02:03 (eight months ago)

I do care! -- I listen to Vanity Fair's Little Gold Men podcast, which has been covering the Emmys for months -- but I don't have ABC and was too lazy to see if I could finagle another free trial from Fubo TV or whatever.

Now catching up via the NYT live blog. Liza Colon-Zayas over Meryl Streep feels like an upset, but people do love The Bear.

jaymc, Monday, 16 September 2024 02:34 (eight months ago)

Lamorne Morris is a little surprising, too, but that category was always kind of up in the air. Some people though it would be Downey Jr., but nobody watched The Sympathizer.

Richard Gadd wins a couple awards for Baby Reindeer.

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 September 2024 02:38 (eight months ago)

If not for Little Gold Men, I'd have had no idea that Baby Reindeer was as big of a hit as it was. Same with Shogun, tbh.

jaymc, Monday, 16 September 2024 02:41 (eight months ago)

It was a surprise that Richard Gadd won over both Andrew Scott and Matt Bomer, and that Baby Reindeer won best limited series. Great performance and great show though

I don't remember Liza Colon-Zayas that much from Season 2 of The Bear (which the award was for), but she gave the most memorable performance in Season 3, maybe that was on voters' minds

Dan S, Monday, 16 September 2024 02:48 (eight months ago)

She has a memorable nightclub scene.

Cast of The Bear is uniformly strong, of course, but c’mon, even the hosts felt the need to do a “The Bear is not a comedy” joke right up front.

cryptosicko, Monday, 16 September 2024 02:53 (eight months ago)

She got a terrific S2 showcase in that episode where she went to culinary school.

It's weird talking about all these Bear noms/wins because they're honoring S2 way after everyone has absorbed and responded to S3.

...said showcase featuring also said nightclub scene.

not surprising that Shogun won the drama awards

The Emmy calendar is June 1-May 31, so a lot of shows naturally schedule their new seasons for the spring, so they'll be fresh in Emmy voters' minds. But The Bear has always aired in June, so a new season airs before the Emmys that the previous season was eligible for. And because last year's Emmys were delayed by the strikes, The Bear Season 1 won its Emmys a full 19 months after it aired.

Because of this, the show's strong Season 2 arguably helped its Season 1 awards chances. Similarly, there was speculation that the weaker Season 3 could *hurt* its Season 2 awards chances, though that doesn't seem to have happened tonight.

jaymc, Monday, 16 September 2024 03:09 (eight months ago)

Hannah Einbinder was incredible in Season 3 of Hacks. I didn't think it would win best comedy, but it was deserving

Dan S, Monday, 16 September 2024 03:11 (eight months ago)

I stand corrected! Maybe Season 3 airing during Emmy voting *did* hurt The Bear. Glad that Hacks won.

jaymc, Monday, 16 September 2024 03:15 (eight months ago)

the only Bear who should’ve won was Bear from Reservation Dogs imo

Hacks has been consistently outstanding, very glad for the awards it received

DJP, Monday, 16 September 2024 12:17 (eight months ago)

OK so talk me through this because I LOVED Hacks S1, watched all of S2 despite it not being as good and quit S3 after one ep because it seemed even worse, more Lifetime drama than comedy. So if I thought S2 was way worse than S1 am I right that I won't like S3? Or does it turn around and regain some of the heights of S1?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 16 September 2024 15:38 (eight months ago)

Eh, you probably won’t like S3 (which, to be clear, ruled)

DJP, Monday, 16 September 2024 15:47 (eight months ago)

Yeah, maybe I shouldn't even say "worse," more like, S1 was exactly what I wanted this show to be and S2 was about half what I wanted to be and half another kind of show and I got the sense that S3 is really mostly that other thing

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 16 September 2024 15:48 (eight months ago)

I feel like this is recapitulating the moment when I jumped in to say how much I hated the line "what is grief but love persevering" and thought it kind of killed the show and DJP loved it, I have come to see that this is less a better/worse thing and more a "what do you want this show to be" kind of thing

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 16 September 2024 15:50 (eight months ago)

Is it weird that I remember that

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 16 September 2024 15:50 (eight months ago)

s3 has a few maudlin moments--the scene where Deborah meets with some college students to discuss some of her "problematic" material felt groan-worthy to me--but I think the show has generally maintained its quality, so I dunno. If the show stopped working for you at a certain point, I can't really see it picking up again.

cryptosicko, Monday, 16 September 2024 16:18 (eight months ago)

xp: haha no, I remember that too and I think the framing is 100% OTM

DJP, Monday, 16 September 2024 16:41 (eight months ago)

IIRC Hacks season 3 dropped two episodes at a time, I was planning to only watch one per setting, I felt very uncertain after s3e1 so went ahead with e2 and by the end of it was like "oh right, of course, this series rules"

"Lunch" is self-explanatory (bernard snowy), Monday, 16 September 2024 16:46 (eight months ago)

OK so maybe I try one more

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 16 September 2024 17:23 (eight months ago)

S3 had a great ending!

Dan S, Monday, 16 September 2024 17:44 (eight months ago)

Reservation Dogs got some nominations but no awards I think.
