Aw so glad you like I Like Movies, Whiney! ivy yours is the first recommendation I’ve heard for Longlegs and I’m taking it very seriously
I’ve been watching Gena Rowlands and Shelley Duvall movies and haven’t seen anything “top 3” this year except Challengers but I liked Thelma and I’m glad The Substance exists and that I saw it

Raayan - My Indian action film of the year so far. Great stoic hero, great tragic plotline.
Merry Christmas - Superior mystery period piece set amongst Mumbai's christian population (lots of portuguese names I noticed). Wonderful romantic comedy chemistry between Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif.
Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In - The last man standing of Hong Kong action cinema with an elegiac ode to the city's past.

Release date is when you were able to see it first, otherwise everything's always a year behind and you never get to vote for anything. Unless you saw it at a festival before it was on general release I guess.

Things I've enjoyed that don't seem to have been mentioned yet...
THE PROMISED LAND (they should have released it under the Danish title - THE BASTARD) - Mads Mikkelson having a ball as hard-boiled retired soldier trying to cultivate potatoes in 18th century Jutland. The best western of 2024.
CHUCK CHUCK BABY - quite corny but nonetheless enjoyable queer love story set in a north Wales chicken factory. Features an excellent singalong montage set to the sound of "Northern Lights" by Renaissance, for any prog-pop fans.
THE ORIGIN OF EVIL - part Knives Out/part Highsmith extended universe inheritance caper starring the very good Laure Calamy out of Call My Agent.
SLOW - if you only see one Estonian drama about the dawning relationship between a choreographer and an asexual sign language interpreter, make it this one.
HOARD - maybe my favourite BritFlick of the year? Young girl leaving school is triggered into a sudden flashback about her birthmum's hoarding. Excellent use of Baby D's "Let Me Be Your Fantasy".
MY FAVOURITE CAKE - lovely late-life romance between an Iranian widow and a lonely cab driver she picks up - like Before Sunrise for the over-70s.

Man, Hundreds of Beavers. Definitely too long, but what an indulgence! Bugs Bunny meets Buster Keaton meets Jackie Chan meets Nintendo.

It didn't work for me. On paper, given the various ingredients, it should have been my favourite film ever but... I dunno. The pacing was weird, the gags were repetitive and outstayed their welcome, it dragged and it didn't really make me laugh. I wish I'd enjoyed it more though - I appreciated the effort!

The only bit that raised a laugh for me was the woodpecker being summoned every time he whistled. I couldn't really get much further than the parts after he receives his trapper gear

― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 19 December 2024 14:10 (two weeks ago) link
My daughter and I, we saw how much time was remaining and were perplexed, but I think they filled the duration well enough. We have a friend with a son in film school right now, and apparently the son thought the movie was the most inspiring " I want to make something like that" thing ever. Tbh, I hope he is an outlier, lol.

― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 19 December 2024 22:04 (two weeks ago) link
It's very charming in that homemade movie way. The pace can be drag a bit at times but the final madcap chase reminded me of Wallace and Gromits The Wrong Trousers[show hidden text]

Just a thought but I wonder if it rated better with US audiences for whatever reason?
― Sade of the Del Amitri (dog latin), Thursday, 19 December 2024 23:08 (two weeks ago) link
My daughter said it reminded her of Wallace & Gromit, too. With, you know, poo and pee and stripper jokes.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 19 December 2024 23:46 (two weeks ago) link
It's a small cult film, I don't think anything like that can be inferred?
As I said, worked like gangbusters with the London audience I saw it with.
― a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 20 December 2024 11:01 (two weeks ago) link
It's also just a thing where it's tough for a modern audience to get into the right mindset for it. Obviously it's nowhere near Keaton/Chaplin level but even with those guys most ppl these days mostly consume them through shorts and highlight reels.
― a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 20 December 2024 11:03 (two weeks ago) link
My colleagues in our circle loved it; I too could only stand about a half hour. But it's a cool movie to embrace and I understand its aims.
― the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 December 2024 13:38 (two weeks ago) link
I think one reason my friend's kid in film school found it so inspiring is that it really shows that whatever your ridiculous idea, if there is a will there is a way. This movie cost, what, $150,000 and was made over the course of a few years, with breaks in between, in the dead of winter in rural Wisconsin and Michigan? Sheer creativity and ingenuity and originality and willpower, regardless of how much one likes the results. I saw a bit of an interview with the filmmakers and I think they said one of their goals was just to make a movie completely at odds with what's expected from a lot of indie film, slapstick and silly. I suppose in that sense it has some in common with the Daniels guys, just embrace the independence and do whatever the fuck you want. I can't imagine watching their films a second time, either, but I'm as glad they were made as I hope no one tries to make movies like them.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 December 2024 15:09 (two weeks ago) link

― bookmarkflaglink (Darin), Friday, 20 December 2024 16:57 (two weeks ago) link
i think maybe since we don't really get capital-C comedies anymore and no one goes to theaters anymore, we've forgotten the contagious joy of seeing a funny movie in the theater with other people. i would have enjoyed HOB in any environment but it really benefited from seeing it with an audience. it is admittedly a little exhausting even with that but i loved that someone made a mostly-silent, slapstick comedy that only cares about getting laughs (though i am tempted to write my essay on how Hundreds of Beavers is actually about trauma)

This month, the LA Times named All of Us Strangers as the best film of 2023
