How much of your posting on here is "showing off" - and who does it the most?

Whether it's intellectual wankering, musical trivia namedroppings, analytical oneupmanship or pretentious blathering on any random topic (which others can tell you know jack about) - how much of what you type on here is primed for people to get impressed and oooh and aaah at your witty wordings ? Is it conscious or unconscious ? Is it all another hunger for approval...

...and who is notorious for it ? haha i wonder who'll admit anything

V, Monday, 25 November 2002 06:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not talking about your own posting of naked/baby pics either

V, Monday, 25 November 2002 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

All of it, probably.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 25 November 2002 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, are you thinking of anyone in particular here?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 November 2002 06:14 (twenty-three years ago)

nah, no one in particular...i just envy those people who can write in a detailed manner about the most erudite of subjects and still not give off a whiff of pretense or the feeling of an eager-puppy-wanting-his-tummy-scartched-approvalness

V, Monday, 25 November 2002 06:16 (twenty-three years ago)

And you're asking US???

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 25 November 2002 06:21 (twenty-three years ago)

everything i've ever done ever is showing off

it doesn't work

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 25 November 2002 06:36 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, i think i'm lazy wr2 my posts on this board. i certainly hope that i don't come off like a show-off -- i know that I don't impress myself as far as my ILX posts go.

there are some ILXers who definitely show off, but i am going to bite my tongue for now ... i know who they are

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 25 November 2002 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

jess,

you stalk him too though... huh?

or nuhuh?

gygax!, Monday, 25 November 2002 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

uh... how did that happen... ignore the above!

kthxbye!

gygax!, Monday, 25 November 2002 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I post for advice, as well as fun--I post hoping to share anecdotes with people that may have something more to add--for my own enjoyment/education...

Ashley Andel, Monday, 25 November 2002 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

check out the thread about name droppers for some top showing off action.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 25 November 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I do, to be honest. Generally on ILM. I don't think I'm the only one, but I'm not naming any names!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 25 November 2002 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

What Tad said.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 25 November 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I try. I kinda suck at it though.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 25 November 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes I'm writing to amuse my mates, which counts a bit.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 November 2002 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it's a fine line between showing off and trying to entertain, or sincerely trying to say sensible/interesting/true things. I would love to think that I am occasionally impressing people with my cleverness or knowledge or wit or something, but in this company I can't imagine I am, and I guess I think I'm more having to sort of justify my existence here - not in some sort of Weakest Link/Big Brother deal (if we can be voted off, I missed that rule), but just making myself appear to be a worthwhile member of this exceptional community, hoping people don't think every time they see my name that they might as well skip that post.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

we know who we are. It is the biological imperative.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 25 November 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"hoping people don't think every time they see my name that they might as well skip that post"

yes, same here. sometimes posting in an unexceptional community has its merits

V, Monday, 25 November 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

i am like, so cool. check me out. alright.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Each time I move my mouse pointer over the submit button, I ask myself: will what I've written help, in any small way, to get me laid?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

So how's it working?

Sean (Sean), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Dandy, he hasn't had even so much as an intrigued glance from an ilXorette.

Graham (graham), Monday, 25 November 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I used to have this problem with self-deprecation. Then it morphed into sarcastic self-deprecation (i.e., talking about how cool I was in a droll sort of voice), which, by the time I got to ILX, was becoming such a habit that some of the sarcasm was wearing off. I'm not sure what I'm thinking when I post -- either I'm all worked up about an argument or it's part of a desperate struggle to ingratiate myself to everyone.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of the time I ask myself what my motivation is for alluding to certain cultural figures or memes (thanks, Marvin Minsky), and generally I just don't know. I don't worry about it too much. There are some high-falutin' things which I am quite clearly interested in, whether or not anyone notices. But there are also times when I might throw in a reference to some bit of culturalia that is more or less irrelevant to the subject at hand, and in those cases I suspect my motives. I do trying to avoid sounding like I know more about something than I do, generally speaking (though maybe I got into that habit while answering essy questions on tests in college).

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 25 November 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i am cursed with the irresistable urge to type things without thinking them through first, and i have nothing to show off about, so i am obliged to just live with the shyte i post sometimes and not concern myself with what everyone might think.
i have to admit though, i would be mortified if i found out people avoided threads i was on!

donna (donna), Monday, 25 November 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of my questions are about my inability to work electrical appliances, but I'm hoping there's someone out there who finds this really impressive.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

PJ, you are so dreamy, bucking the patriarch with your subversive befuddlement with technology. I would ask you to marry me but it would be a shame to starve to death because neither of us could work the microwave.

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

If you wish that post to stop making less than no sense and upgrade it to making exactly no sense then you may mentally insert a Y, but I'm sure somebody will have more fun with it as it is.

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

(That didn't make sense either. Now nobody will love me. Oh, wait, no change. Well. I can't cope with Mondays, you know. Someone else say something so I stop making quite such a spectacle of myself, eh?)

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

most of my posts are meant in good faith.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

no jel they're evil!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

bucking the patriarch

i'm sure this probably belongs on the euphemisms thread

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, this thread has gone this far without Ethan posting anonymous hate towards me? I have lost my touch :(

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm too lazy to show off.
