It's not really a "grim" film, but it's funny how the end credits to Married To The Mob play over a full-on Freed Unit At MGM homage.

Its not the actual end of the movie, but in the climax of the otherwise terrible 2000s action movie Gamer the film stops cold for the villain to do a full length song & dance production number to "I've Got You Under My Skin" with henchmen dancers and everything

Scrooged

the end credits to Married To The Mob play over a full-on Freed Unit At MGM homage.

Had to check this, and it's not really full-on, and there's just a few dance steps, and it's the beginning of the deleted scenes montage that the credits actually play against...but the vibe is there.

is slumdog millionaire grim enough?

invalid handel (voodoo chili), Monday, 18 November 2024 21:13 (one month ago) link

Does Inland Empire count as grim? I can't make any sense of it, but I think it ends with a dance.

clemenza, Monday, 18 November 2024 21:16 (one month ago) link

Mentioned in OP. I think you could fairly call it fairly grim

Sorry, missed that.

clemenza, Monday, 18 November 2024 21:19 (one month ago) link

Simón del desierto - not grim imo but it doesn't seem to matter

Zatōichi (2003) - def not grim but best dancing

Pennies from Heaven

Would been even grimmer if they hadn't cut the part where they actually hang Steve Martin.

I got to see a screening of this around 2000 with Steve Martin and Jessica Harper in attendance. They said it was the first time they'd seen the movie with an audience that liked it.

Salo was supposed to end with a big dance party as the credits rolled but Pasolini decided it didn't work. There's a YouTube video with photos from the set.

Although as it stands, it does end with a dance scene.

I have no memory of Inland Empire ending with a dance sequence, only that I had friends over to watch it and I don't think they've ever quite forgiven me. Maybe we didn't make it to the finish line?

Jancsó also, though the dance usually climaxes in a massacre before the end of the film.

Rachel Getting Married certainly got the grim arms: girl braces herself, goes to family wedding, gets eyes like, "You got some nerve, evil skank"--no matter how much rehab, it's the shit you can't take back (my basic def ov noir) However, eventually, even as bad stuff goes on, incl. from black sheep girl, who still has a mouth on her, the music, amazing music, of the improvising wedding band---they're a band now---*also* pushes back--'til I feel like there must be dancing, the music is dancing, the people and the mouths are moving.

TV series rather than a movie, but Giri/Haji, just before its conclusion, has the main cast suddenly do an interpretive dance of the plot up to that point.

I don't really remember if it's grim or ends with a dance sequence, but I was trying to remember the name of Holy Motors for days. Then I watched Furiosa on a plane and they used the phrase "holy motors" and eureka.
