Is there an academic discipline or field dedicated to studying what makes things obvious, or Obviousness?

There's a principle in patent law that you can't patent obvious things, but beyond a few guidelines, is there actual study or theorizing behind obviousness? What makes things obvious? What are things that appear obvious but are not, and vice versa? Can you quantify obviousness on a scale? Some kind of epistemological sub-field that you can specialize in?

I mean I know you can become a Captain, but can you be a Doctor in it?

You can be a Master of it, at least.

I would bet that there's some contemporary analytic philosophy on this topic, but probably not enough to make up an entire sub-field. A search for "obviousness" on philpapers.org does turn up a number of papers in various areas where claims about what is obvious are at issue, but I didn't find any that directly concern obviousness itself

Here's something: Epistemology of the Obvious: A Geometrical Case

fwiw, the patent process skirts around this by acknowledging that the obviousness that precludes a patent is not a universal quality, but that the invention to be patented should not be obvious to anyone 'well-versed' in the area where the patented device or principle would be applied.

That sounds very much like, "I may not know pornography when I see it, but I do know this gang of perverts..."

re: Geometrical Case, that sounded pretty promising! I will pursue some non-obvious means to get the full extract...
