Okay, so we're all going ice skating uptown the first week in December. When's good for you? Daytime or evening? Weekday or weekend? Are you busy celebrating Finnish Independence Day on the 6th?

Hey! I went ice skating when I was in Nude York! And this was ages ago! You lot so copy offa me innit! I bet you are going to go to a bar afterwards too! And then get ID-ed but you are underage in America so you have to secretly sip your GRATE FRIENDS chocolate vodka instead! O what larks, o what larks.

Who has their own ice skates? YEAH!! Who can do spins!!!

Londoners - we should go ice skating too! LETS GO! STREATHAM ICE ARENA!!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I would suggest a bar afterward but I don't think the New Yorkers on the board are really into that sort of thing.

When are you coming back here, Sarah?

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it when they're skating in home alone 2: lost in new york and daniel stern steals, like, a guy's scarf.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 25 November 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I would suggest a bar afterward but I don't think the New Yorkers on the board are really into that sort of thing.

Heh.

Jen (nstop), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will only go ice skating if we can drink beer WHILE ice skating.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I am busy celebrating the fifth anniversary of turning 21 on the 6th.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 25 November 2002 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I get chilly anyway so I would nominate a Saturday or Sunday afternoon for ice skating.

haha Londoners, try, but you can never match the montage of adorable pastimes the NYCILXORs have engaged in this fall.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Saturday afternoon works for me. And I for one encourage drinking on the ice.

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

We are very twee. And seXXXy.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Count me in. Wherever. Whenever.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you going to wear Shakira's porno pants?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Saturday or Sunday afternoon sounds good to me. Last time I went skating was maybe five years ago, so this should be interesting...

Jen (nstop), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm basically counting the minutes 'til ice skating so count me in. And afternoon day sounds good since the ice'll only be that much whiter.

Andy, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 05:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Skating at Somerset House would be MUCH better than skating at Streatham ice rink!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Ho ho, he was a sk8r boi...

Actually Matt you are probably right! But the only ice skating hem-hem VENUE I have sampled in Lunding has been the Streatham Palais. Have you been to Somerset House?

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing can beat the queens ice rink in Sheffield. It's like Phoenix nights on ice.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

They are also having a rink at Marble Arch this year.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always wanted to skate in NYC, some sort of lousy romantic fantasy I have. And I'm sure the skating at the frog pond in Boston would not compare....right Ally. Maybe I'll take a road trip and just skate around body checking everyone who hates Boston.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

A rink at Marble Arch?? Crikey!! That could either be really good or really rubbish depending on how it's handled. Where did you find out about that Rick?

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

By walking past the hoardings at Marble Arch every day!

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been to Somerset House for day trips and Orbital gigs and stuff, but not to the ice rink last year. But it looks luvverly. Look!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

my alma mater! It looks so pretty.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Hooray for us! We are going skating!

Shall we say Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7?

And perhaps some of you non-skating slaggards would like to meet us for hot and/or alcoholic drinks afterward?

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Saturday afternoon a go then? It should be.

Any thoughts on specific whens and wheres? I haven't skated here before so don't know rink particulars...

Andy, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I would love to ice skate on Saturday afternoon. Hmm, how about 1 o'clock and people can straggle in later at their own risk?

Paul, we are talking about the uptown Lasker Rink, right? What is the approximate cross street for the entrance?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

1 oclock, a bit early to coordinate with afternoon drinking? what say you to 2?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

What time are we having post skate drinks?

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

hey rosemary i have a good book for you! all about '66!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh boy!

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, yeah: rink location? The only place I've ever skated in NYC was the rink at Rockefeller Center, so I have no idea where this one is uptown.

Jen (nstop), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 05:24 (twenty-three years ago)

2's a better time for me if it's the north-end Central Park rink we're talking about (or any other rink for that matter).

Time to clean out the flask...

Andy, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 05:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll come, but I won't be able to join you until about 3.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 05:46 (twenty-three years ago)

We could always make our meeting time 3-ish...

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 05:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Lasker Rink is what I had in mind. It is cheaper and much less crowded than those other rinks.

It's located near where Seventh Avenue hits the top of the Park at 110th Street. It's right by the 110th stop on the 2/3. If you like, we can meet at a cafe or something in the neighborhood and then all head over together. The Park View Hotel is on Lenox, right by the rink, and I think but am not sure that they have a little cafe area.

I don't know how much skating stamina you all have; mine is somewhat limited. I imagine that drinks will be required not more than a couple of hours after we begin. Thus, 2:00 pm or even 3:00 sounds to me like a good start time, especially if we plan to drink till dawn again. People can start arriving for post-skate drinks at 7:00, but we will have a good head start on them, and eventually win.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 06:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Alas, the 5-plus-hour endurance skate will have to wait 'til another time...

And Paul's plan sounds ace. I'm no help for picking a cafe/etc. in that part of town though.

Andy, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

You know what song always reminds me of ice skating? Steve Winwood - Valerie. It's because I went on an ice skating date one time in grade eleven and the guy I was with (who turned out to be nothing more than a heartbreaking scamp) was all "Hey, they play good music here!" and voila - memory burn. I know none of you care, but I can't sleep and every time I see this thread title I can't help thinking "Valereeeeeee" ...aighhh...

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Kim, you have exacted your revenge, because every time I read the word "Valerie," the Richard Thompson song sings itself in my head. Two sleepless souls now, you with your Winwood, I with my inane rhymes.

I used to go to this same rink with my sixth-grade class and the DJ would play Thriller -- the whole album -- over and over.

Zanny's, on 108th and Columbus, is a fine cafe.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 07:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay! Are we meeting at the rink or at some Park View/Zanny's-type place?

Paul, I respect your authoratah. Tell me where to be when.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

For those who feel frightened, dizzy, and desperately alone uptown, the expedition will assemble at Zanny's at 3:00 pm. Zanny's is located at 108th and Columbus. Here is a map (not exactly to scale), with train stations in brackets:

----+---Broadway ---+-------[1/9]

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Darn it, that didn't come out at all! Let me try again.

Meanwhile, anyone who doesn't need company and/or may be a little late should just meet us at the rink, whose location I explained earlier.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

How about this:

----+---Broadway----+-------[1/9]

    |               |         |          W

ooh, it looks like Nethack. I will hunt around in my closet for Frostbrand.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

so...my pal Catherine sez it's OK if we crash her house party after post-skating afternoon drinks; she lives in the LES, has very cool friends and a great apartment. anyone who's still around say 9:45ish should make the trip (I will lead the way)....

also, we'd be wise to stop at a liquor store on the way there and pick up a bottle or three for the occasion.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 December 2002 06:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my -- Matos extends afternoon drinking spree well into the evening, well done!

Will Michael Daddino and his pompadour be making a turn around the ice?? Or do greasers not skate?

And what about Geeta? Now that we're getting closer to your neighborhood?

Any other NYCers who are being deathly silent on this issue?

Tracer "Rock Star" Hand?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 December 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I never could skate, but then I don't live in NYC :/

WHEN IS THIS?

jm, Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a party at my new place in LES on Saturday as well. It's a birthday party for my roommate, however, and my place is quite small, so not everyone could come, but some could! (you can draw straws if you like)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 5 December 2002 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Jimmy the Mod: It's this Sat at 3 directions upthread! Yancey: You know the ILxers are all of one and one for all, maybe we'll visit in rotating shifts from friend of Matos's party.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 5 December 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i am down for the polish new year's shindig.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
Is ice skating still legal? Should "we" go again? In quotes cos I didn't go to this first one?

Allyzay, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the rink in Central Park is open, even though it was like 80 degrees yesterday.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I know! That is quite odd. But we should totally go. I don't know how to ice skate so someone will have to help me though.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sooo going to Imperial Palace this New Year's.

Annouschka (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, helping beautiful women learn to ice skate is what boyfriends are for. Or something.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh. Yeah, I guess so.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 4 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

We need to engage in more adorable fall pastimes again.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've decided I'm going to drink more sherry this season. It's part of my plan to become '60s suburban bourgeois. Would anybody Fancy A Sherry?

Annouschka (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I will definitely join you in becomong 60s suburban bourgeois.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously it is ice cold.

Like my ass will be when I slam it repeatedly into ice.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

No, your ass gets red after that... y'know... like after a spanking.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You are ruining this wholesome activity you know.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Baby, the only two things I do well are Hockey and Fucking, 'coz they're the two most fun things to do on a cold day...

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Do we have a problem?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

But what of the ice skating?!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That's pretty!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, I could use some sherry.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This was a FAP? Oh. Nevermind...

New ModJ, Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Should we try the rink at Riverbank State Park this year?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 5 December 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

While in London we tried to go iceskating but the rink we saw was plastic! PLASTIC!!!

Carey (Carey), Friday, 5 December 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Riverbank is covered, should we go to Wolman this year instead?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 5 December 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, WE ARE DOING THIS!!!

When is good? I was thinking the weekend of the 20th, maybe the 21st, Sunday? I have not many clues as to where the best place would be. But I have a skirt to wear, so I am all set.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Wollman v Lasker?

Wollman is bigger, but more crowded (maybe). Lasker has better music (after dusk).

I'm tempted toward Wollman because we went to Lasker last year, but maybe we should stick with a good thing?

That weekend sounds good, Carey; G. can document with photos.
