The non-legal drugs are less responsible for dystopian U.S. than their criminalization, which results in gang turf wars, impure and contaminated product, unknown dosage, crimes intended to make money to buy overpriced drugs, and stigmatization/legal repercussions that dissuade users and addicts from getting help. Drug decriminalization and being able to purchase pure FDA-controlled portions at legal dispensaries would reduce the harm caused by drugs immensely, but that will never happen in our lifetimes because Trump (and every Republican president since Nixon, and some Democratic ones too) needs drug overdoses to help scapegoat Mexicans, Chinese, and "inner-city criminals" (read: scary Black people). Remember how Trump urged Republicans not to pass the bipartisan border bill because that would take away a major campaign issue he needs for fearmongering? Same thing with the "war on drugs". The last thing he wants is nobody dying from drug overdoses.

Didn't an attempt at decriminalization fail in Oregon? What happened? Just bad timing, with covid and fentanyl spike?

Whatever drugs people have been dying of most--Fentanyl or Oxy--definitely adds to the feeling of doom and pointlessness.

I remember a couple few years ago seeing a Big Pharma print ad for some drug that would help you poop if you were all strung out and constipated on opiates.. like, let's not address the actual cause of your pain, but prescribe yet another drug to offset the effects of drug #1

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 17 December 2024 22:55 (two weeks ago) link

iirc there was a super bowl ad for that one.
