I get made redundant sometime next year (and it's looking earlier by the minute) and I'll get a small but not too small pay out, I want to go away for two months. Where do I go?

filey

gareth, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The dole office.

Martin, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Redcar.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An alien planet, or if that doesn't pan out you can try a gravel pit somewhere in Surrey. The two are pretty much interchangable.

Pete, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The boozer

Nick, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does the least helpful suggestion win a prize?

Nick, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, and I have to say that you Nick are winning, you see I've always wanted to see Redcar, I've been to Filey though and it's a dump.

cabbage, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete, now I've got an image in my head of Ghostface Killah and RZA transformed into Jessie style Dorking eccentrics, inviting passers by to check out their gravel pit.

Nick, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That song is about Blakes 7 fandom.

Tom, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Check out my disused quarry, a mystery in deepest Surrey.

Pete, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ToesCanTalk = genuinely witty contributor to forum. Anyone would think he spent his time writing for the radio, not throwing bloody darts at the wall.

I once worked in Redcar and during lunch breaks I'd often stroll along its seafront, an icy wind driving in from the North Sea on one side and ICI's huge chemical complex spewing out pollutants on the other. See picture of this charming place:

Get the Eurostar to Paris, then get down to Andorra, then on to Barcelona, then back up the coast into France toward Marseilles, get on a train to Milan, then back up north to Zurich, make your way to Luxembourg, go through Germany to Hamburg, then up to Denmark, find the bridge to Sweden, Stockholm, Oslo, Bergen...boat home. Don't know about the logistics, but should last two months and be quite educational and fun. Could cost a bit.

this link should work:

scott, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

damn, it keeps putting a space between the 'i' and 'r' of 'yorkshire'. take that space out and it'll work. hope it's worth it.

scott, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mmmm, nice one Jel, I've been to a few of those places and love them, especially Barcelona and Bergen. The best deal I've seen so far is seven hundred quid for the following route: london - Bangkok - overland - Bali - two stops in Australia - two stops in the states - back to London.

tropical beaches and vast metropolises (sp?)

cabbage, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do the trans-siberian express. Just cause I'd love to and I will enjoy the trip through the power of vicarious telepathy. Or some kind of satellite linked VR headset.

Nick, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmmm, not sure about the trans-siberian, but I may well try the GAN, th train that goes from Perth to Sydney in 3 days, it's the second longest after the TS. Either that or the train that goes from Seattle to LA, the coast starlight or whatever it's called.

I do like the idea of a VR headset though.

cabbage, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Edmonton. It is really a pleasent city and you have the most glamorous of guides.

anthony, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a friend who got made redundant, he was going to move to the British Virgin Islands. Then he decided to move to Torquay. Now he is living in South Shields. So be careful.

Emma, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hear Chesterfield's nice in the early Spring?

Tim, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...but the question mark suggests you're not very sure about this

Nick, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes. Well spotted, Nicky.

Tim, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chesterfield itself is very rarely nice I must say, the countryside around it is gorgeous though.

Emma just described possibly my worst nightmare, I've got to make this happen!

cabbage, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

stay at home and rent videos

Geoff, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim, you've just made me feel small. I think the problem was the concept of Chesterfield being nice in the early spring didn't seem totally preposterous to me. I guess maybe I was thinking about the countryside.

Nick, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, Nick. Didn't mean to.

Tim, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Liar.

Ally C, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come to LA and gorge yourself on proper Mexican-American food. Well, *I* think that's one heck of a vacation.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

st petersburg russia

ambrose, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nathalie, Tuesday, 21 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My advice? Afghanistan, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Algeria, or East Timor. Anywhere but Paris. Send me a postcard.
