aiui UK potato crisps are little more than delivery systems for a wide variety of flavored adulterations; the potato component could just as easily be a communion wafer and produce the same eating experience. whereas an American tortilla chip consisting only of masa, oil and salt can stand alone and still be enjoyed.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Saturday, 15 February 2025 19:39 (nine months ago)

I think that’s correct, which is not a slight on UK achievements in potato chip/crisp flavoring

I have never understood Ready Salted crisps.

I saw a video clip on instagram this week which purported to be from 1981 and had people from I think Newcastle-Upon-Tyne trying new flavours of crisps like prawn cocktail and pickled onion - they weren't into it tbh but also like - that can't have been 1981 right? I vaguely remember 1981 and we had all those crisps already. I remember my mum writing a complaint letter to Hedgehog crisps because she found a metal washer in a packet of crisps and they sent us a whole box of them. that was probably about 1982 tbf

visiting, Sunday, 16 February 2025 04:32 (nine months ago)

Not so long ago, a little sachet of salt was about as flavoursome as things got for the humble potato crisp, but in recent years things have changed. Crisps are now available in all manner of "exotic" flavours - smokey bacon, prawn cocktail, pickled onion, roast chicken... the choice is overwhelming.

That's Life! sent Paul Heiney out to meet members of the public, armed with some of the latest crisp flavours. Is the public's palette sufficiently sophisticated to identify any of these extraordinary new crisp concoctions?

Clip taken from That's Life!, originally broadcast on BBC One, Sunday 15 March, 1981.

while i love a fresh corn tortilla chip (and a frito tbrr), there is a dish which some vietnamese restaurants here in the US call beef with fried potato, and the places that make it with potato chips (crisps) rather than french fries (chips) -- i mean, there's few things as good as that. plus i just love a good jalapeno cheddar kettle chip with my sandwich

Nobody has answered my question.

trm (tombotomod), Sunday, 16 February 2025 05:49 (nine months ago)

I've googled it and apparently this means nachos but with crisps instead of tortilla chips. so the answer is obviously no, we barely have any Mexican food in Europe, let alone bastardised US adaptations of it. I have never even seen crisps laid out on a plate in an organised way, either they are in a packet or if you're fancy a bowl.

Yeah. I mean ngl lately I'm becoming militant in my preference for tahini sauce over humus, but not when it comes to dipping chips. for sure one of my favorite summer meals is tortilla chips with a little bowl of hummus and another little bowl of Andalusian gazpacho, both for dipping.

idk where I stand on potato vs. corn. I think Darragh is basically right (about corn chips from the USA, not capitalism) and I'd rate restaurant or homemade tortilla chips above the bougiest kettle crisp on earth... but def potato chips over commercial corn chips from the supermarket, which is what you get here most of the time. I also have an embarrassing fondness for the 'mystery texture' varieties like hot fries/munchos/monster much/hoops

xp

I parboil the wedges for 4 mins from rolling boil or longer if they are biggies in heavily salted water. Then dip them in a bowl of light olive oil mixed with Cayenne/Smoked Paprika/Cumin/Turmeric. Then 14 mins in the air fryer and onto a tray to be warmed up again in the oven, close to when whatever else I'm cooking is ready. It's probably unhealthy but I heard some sous chef on yt saying the key to good mashed potatoes is going heavy with the salt during the boiling, and I have been applying this to wedges as well.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 17 February 2025 14:27 (nine months ago)

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 17 February 2025 14:31 (nine months ago)

i just cut up potatoes into wedges and put olive oil, salt, pepper on them and throw them in the oven at 400 until they are browned on the outside and soft on the inside. i mean they are usually done when they are brown on top. easy peasy. sometimes a little cayenne and paprika sprinkled on top.

_I'm a bit bothered by how many ILXors are having religious revelations lately. I've never seen that kind of thing end up well.

― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo_

I'm not gonna say never, but yeah, that can cause problems, particularly if the religious revelations relate to an inherently patriarchal religion like Christianity. I'd like there to be a thread where I could talk about the way religious trauma continues to affect me without immediately getting some #NotAllChristians response, but I do have to think about look, is it worth the effort.

_We tried. I think ilx has gotten less sexist, less homophobic, and more...conscious, if you will. But a lot of women disappeared off the boards in the process. I've taken long breaks where I was barely here, I'm sort of just coming back from one of those bc I have more free time now. But a lot of the time I scan threads and there's nothing I care about or have an interest in.

― Ima Gardener (in orbit)_

I mean, I think it has been successful. I've learned a great deal by listening to women and, well, not-men here, and I do value greatly what I've learned. And that does get taken for granted, I think, and always has been. There are fewer of us now, and we're older, but I think there is a great deal of value in women our age to still be able to talk in the company of men our age, men from a generation who weren't necessarily inclined to listen to women in the first place and who are, disappointingly, often less inclined to do so over time.

_If I cared that much I should try to start threads that would attract input but that's too much work and I don't want to put myself out there as a culture leader, I just want to participate in lively discussions & sharing thoughts but I don't get that here much any more._

It's the expectation. The fewer women there are, the greater the expectation, the greater, honestly, the burden. It's choosing to be A Woman - a "culture leader", I like that phrasing - when one wants to be just, like, a person, and be treated as a person. People perceived as cis white men have that privilege, and everyone else just doesn't. Being just "a person" means choosing to not respond to the casual patriarchal bullshit that a lot of guys just _don't_ seem to notice and bearing the weight of that. At some point it gets easier to just _not_.

-

Anyway. I'm up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, like usual, and I've been thinking about the Pelicot case, and I guess I do want to talk about my own experience as a SA victim, and how, to me, it does exemplify, did happen because of, patriarchal beliefs about consent, and that it reflects an experience that is just.. the _norm_ for women, and _not_ the norm for men. I've spoilered it for content.

[Hidden text. Tap to view]

I hope it's OK for me to talk about it (and I hope the spoiler tags worked!) It's important to me. When people talk about "rape culture", that's what it means to me. What happened to Gisele Pelicot is awful, so much worse than what I went through. I think her speaking up is important, though, because in some sense she's NOT unique. That the same beliefs and values that allowed all those men to do the things they did to her enabled my rapist to do the things they did to me, enables men in general to sexually assault women in general, not as an exception, but as the norm. I wish more men understood that. I wish more men didn't take that as a personal criticism, as me saying that men are somehow bad or evil as a result of their gender. They're not. Men sexually assault women, I believe, because they're not merely permitted, but actively encouraged to do so. So few of them will acknowledge that or admit it. Even if most men don't understand now, well, I think some will listen and learn from what Gisele Pelicot has to say. From what we have to say. If I've been able to listen to women and learn from them, I believe other people can.

Mailing Addresses: Seven, including a house that we lived in for a year to fix it up for my parents and the PO box that we got a few weeks before we became homeless and have had ever since. (It's due this month, and I hope I can figure out how to pay for it.)

I live about 300 miles north of where I graduated high school.

No, I don't own a home (unless you count the RV we live in that my brother-in-law signed over to me just before he died because my husband's nephew was making noises about taking it over and kicking us out). Probably never will.
