Predictive text message quirks. Also discuss Anna being the bomb.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

What were you trying to write. Anna is a bum?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

No, if you write "anna" on a predictive text phone, it comes up as "bomb". Also, Heather comes up as "heavier", which is very apt for one of my friends.

lol p xx, Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a medium capacity nightclub in Nottingham, things you never knew huh?

(thanks Graham)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

THE zero article

I hope anna never ever explodes.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

It doesn't half annoy me having to go through sub and rub before getting to PUB which is a far more important word, obviously.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Pint = Shot = Riot!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

seems like a natural progression. to some people, probably.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

FAP? I know a rub pub on a nuclear sub.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a bomb on the board? (and once it gets over 50 posts...)

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Once it gets over 50 posts you know Momus is on the thread.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Aren't you supposed to be able to teach it? Like, after a while it'll know you want 'pub'.

The thing that bugs me is the words it MAKES UP.

I type 'umpteen': I get 'unquedo'
'daphne' gets me 'fargod'
'belting' produces 'celtimi'

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Eyeball have you got the dictionary set to English?

I would think by now the fucker would have realised I meant pub...but no.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

of -> md -> me = 4 presses to get "me". mind i was the daft one to teach it "md"

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. It understands English most of the time. It just has a load of other words in its brain as well. Are the words I got real words in a different language? I'm pretty sure 'fargod' isn't. Does no one else get this?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I get unqued? darine celti? (? where it wont let me type anything else until I tell it what I mean)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Eyeball you really must stop belting Daphne umpteen times - thats what your phone is trying to tell you

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

coal -> anal -> cock

(for telling friends I'm in Famous Cock pub, obv)

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I've no idea how it decides to bring up one word before another - it's not by the number of uses, otherwise pub would have been the automatic choice months ago. It is also very annoying that you can't delete words from the dictionary - I accidentally stored grandce a couple of weeks ago and it always brings up that instead of grandad. In spite of it all, it's still faster than pre-predictive text texting.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

if you can't make your phone stop using 'grandce' you should start using it. I'm sure your grandad grandce wouldn't mind too much.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have predictive text, but have noted that if someone should forget to add the final letter to my name, they end up addressing me as 'Rabid'...

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

suzy - puzz

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzypus! [Insert picture of obese cat with Suzy head and tank treads Photoshopped on.]

Word collisions upthread had me imagining a version of "Speed" in which Momus was on the bus.

Anna's, you know, pretty cool, I guess. [Shuffle feet.]

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco you come out as Occiran which sounds much cooler!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

But Tom, that's practically just "Nabisco" backwards!

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

C'mon, everyone, talk more about how cool Anna is.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like threads that go on about how great people on ILE are, unless they are about me.

Nokia's dictionaruy confuses me too. I used to think that when you got nonsense words it was because they were composites of others (eg 'mickid' when I'm trying to type 'nickie') but then I tried making a composite word all in one and it didn't work. Maybe there are secret words that only Nokia knows about.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Where have you been N? I was so worried.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Shut up.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you find R*chey?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, he is working as a JMC rep.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Anna is fantastic, cute and interesting and she tells me stories about meeting pop stars on whom I have crushes, and makes me like them (well, only Kelis so far) even more.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I always get 'book' instead of 'cool'. As a result a friend and I actually say 'book' in person.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The first four letters of one ex-boyfriend's name spell 'knob' - this never fails to amuse me.

Lara, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonah? Jonathon?

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonathan.

Lara, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Others:

Brian = Asian
Ciaran = Charco
Janelle = Landlle
Nickie = Mickid

(Nick already mentioned the last one but I'm allowed mention it again cos she's *my* sister)
