How could we improve the ILX Welcome page?

Welcome to ilXor.com.

ilXor.com is organised as a set of message boards, which can all be accessed from the front page. In addition, there is a site new answers page, which gives you a view of all the recently updated threads from the entire site.

If you want to post, then you'll have to register, which you can do from the menu bar above. Once you are registered, you can customise the site new answers and questions views to suit yourself from customise site new answers. This lets you show or hide certain message boards, and colour them to suit your preferences.

What else might be helpful information for prospective new ilxors?

• On the 'banner' menu that shows up at the top and bottom of most pages, select Boards.
• At bottom of the list of boards, select Flat List of Boards.

• You've arrived!

I think it’s fine and I don’t think changes to the text are gong to sway new users to join or not join. They will join based on whether they enjoy the threads or not, and feel like they want to join in (or tell people off, or troll, etc).

There could be a sentence to the effect of “we welcome new users” but I wonder if that’s true.

The registration approval might be offputting to some, but some others might read it as “I’m glad they won’t just take anyone”.

I’ve been here 20+ years and have no idea how to make a poll or how the bookmark functions work. It took 5 years before I realized there was more than ILM and I can never remember how to post photos. ILX, truly a land of mysteries.

Is there an ‘about us’ page outlining the history or an FAQs. Whatever those may be.

Apart from the FAQ sounding like it was redacted in 2001 and being kinda cute, I'm glad it specifies what POO/OPO means. Took me ages to figure out that one and TS.

Who runs this shop?
There are a group of board moderators who are responsible for the day-to-day administering of their boards. They are headed by Pashmina, who is the ILX Moderator.

One thing I'd really like is a listing of current moderators. I'm always unclear on who the mods are here, outside of two or three.

We did attempt to update the FAQ a couple of years ago but then my focus shifted and I never finished it - I am a terrible person with a terrible brain, sorry.

Ilxmail will send an email to a user using the address they signed up with. It's accessible via the user profile (if you click on someone's display name you get there). It'll appear as an email from robot AT ilxor.com and say "username sent you a message" or something like that.

One thing I'd really like is a listing of current moderators. I'm always unclear on who the mods are here, outside of two or three.

Those two or three are it. Stet (UK based, co-wrote the code with Keith) is sitewide admin, emil.y (UK based) and I (US based) are sitewide moderators. There are a few other ilxors with mod powers but who have withdrawn from the position. We could use a few more mods, but speaking only for myself it's not like I spend a lot of time working on ilx issues. When crankiness starts popping off wherever, I go look at the Most FPd Posters and Most Recent FPs pages to see if any bans are likely, then go about my bizniz.

He was, but it's been years since he's posted or modded unless he's here under a different username.

Trayce, the time difference wouldn't matter at all - we'd love to have you. Is the email connected with your account still current? Let us know if you're interested and I'll shoot you a message (or just send me an ilxmail, mine is still operative).

The time difference will be a plus--having coverage for as many time zones is a good thing, you'll be able to keep an eye out when others are asleep.
