Oh my word. It actually is real.

Now, the basic gag with Police Squad, going back to Airplane!, was that Leslie Nielsen was a slightly stuff, old-fashioned character actor who found himself having to deliver silly puns with a straight face while chaos happened behind him. Which was funny because of the contrast between his inherent gravitas and the puns. Whereas Neeson is just intense and brooding. The puns will just come across as off-putting and out of place.

It's produced by Seth Macfarlane, so my hunch is that most of the jokes will consist of references to things rather than actual jokes. There'll be a short scene where Neeson gate-crashes a concert held by a copy of Lady Gaga, but - hilariously - she sings badly and looks stupid. His boss will by played by an actual who dresses up as Robert Oppenheimer and is reluctant to send the Police Squad on the case because he feels he has blood on his hands.

Drebin will dress in a yellow sports suit and accidentally get a pair of mops glued to his hands, and it'll be hilarious because he looks a bit like Wolverine. Etc.

God help me that trailer made me chuckle

Nielsen is one of the few actors who can mug wildly and play super broad without it coming across as tryhard - whereas Neeson has been funny before but there is some flopsweat there that is a bit of a comedy killer for me. Trailer had two solid jokes though, so who knows?

I took my kids and we loved it. Did we think about it ever again 10 minutes after leavin the theatre? No but seeing it with a big group of people is very fun. And yes of course their favourite part was "the dog part"

It's not a movie made for discourse because much as it goes for political satire at times it is all just silly jokes and they land, perfectly self contained.

I do find myself thinking back on gags days later and chuckling, tho.

Yeah, stuff like that, "I already have chairs at home" etc. never gets old for me. This movie was a hoot, definitely worth seeing in a theater with a crowd. My personal favorite gag (which was also a keen bit of satire) was Drebin being forced to watch ads on the CCTV feed

I was a bit worried that this was going to lose the tone of the original movies/Police Squad show, but was pleasantly surprised that it retained the abject silliness. my only complaints were a few 'Family Guy' moments (and yes, I know Seth MacFarlane produced it, but he was thankfully didn't direct or write the screenplay). for instance...

opening scene was totally wrong, like portraying Drebin Jr as a badass cop who singlehandedly defeats all of the bank robbers flies in the face of the rest of the movie and series, where the Drebins are bumbling buffoons.

AND

the Buffy Tivo joke was stupid, went on too long, and 'Buffy fan' jokes were old like ten years ago

the ending didn't go quite big enough for me, I was hoping for a full on 33 1/3rd over the top ending, but overall those were my only quibbles. I'm glad they avoided excess cameos other than where it fit.

also Pamela Anderson scatting was great

the entire sequence of Frank Drebin's bodycam footage had me cry-laughing

and the "did you get all that?" sequence

my kids couldn't believe that it didn't end with drebin going ham on the MMA fighters

drebin being a badass fits with neeson's baggage, it was a good change imo

I'm less enthusiastic than most of you but I'm glad they had the sense to keep this thing at 85 mins.

I don't think that was a Buffy fan joke so much as a DVR joke, admitidely a very niche proposition but as someone who once lost a buncha TCM because the box had to be "upgraded" I appreciated it.

the one joke I was convinced was going to develop and then they did nothing with.

they have Busta Rhymes in interrogation and they say he has a huge 'rap sheet' and I chortled, expecting there to be a second part of the joke, but there wasn't.

I did absolutely love the Chekhov's Balls. honestly it was a much needed good time after having a bit of a rough weekend. I want to rewatch the first 3 now.

oh and Paul Walter Houser's physical injury slapstick during the AI car sequence and the subsequent prison escape....see, so many good scenes to choose from.

The "Drebin as badass" is a direct callback to the opening of the first or second Naked Gun movie iirc, these should not be films that value characterization

The coming attraction trailers—for Aronofsky’s John Wick wannabe, a stoner comedy with Keanu Reeves as an angel, and the Running Man remake—may have left me with PTSD though.

i never get tired of those gags, similarly in Waynes World 2 when Wayne is naming all the bands booked for Waynestock based on the band names he sees and then says "An old man fashioning a kayak out of a log"

I appreciate how you can do the absolute dumbest bits imaginable and pull them off, as long as the rest of the movie doesn’t break the illusion. Everything’s real dumb here, folks!

So wrong on so many levels

so many dumb throwaway bits that they just drop back in at the end, like chekov’s machine gun

I couldn't get past the first 5 minutes of this movie but got to admit I just lolled heavily at that quoted line.

Almost as good as the previous films' bits:

"She had a body that could melt a cheese sandwich from across the room"

and

"She had the kind of legs you'd like to suck on for a day or two."

"She reminded me of my mother, all right, no doubt about it"

"Frank, snap out of it. You're lookin' at her like she was mother, for chrissakes."

The arse line is phrased even better in the film, and also plays harder as the twist on a sillier gag — it’s something like “Her body was put together in all the right ways. Head. Shoulders. Knees and toes. And the type of bottom that would make any toilet beg for the brown.”

I laughed so hard at this, particular the first half hour. Just proper physically shaking with laughter. I loved the old ones and it's in their spirit but with some modern twists.

the whole Tivo/Buffy thing cracked me up, especially after I learned Liam Neeson was like "what the fuck does ANY of this mean?"

The infrared scene with the dog etc was not sophisticated or whatever but it was so funny.
