haven't decided which one is my favorite (tho the aujla family is the leader in the clubhouse).

of course scorsese's living room looks like that!

So many of these just look like fancy waiting rooms

von Furstenberg and Scorsese disqualified for having portraits of themselves

At first glance I like Chloe Sevigny’s

Colson Whitehead's room was the first to grab me.

At first glance I like Chloe Sevigny’s

yeah, me too.. it looks like she couldn't give a shit that the new yorker is coming to photograph her living room, zero tidying up

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 5 May 2025 20:33 (one month ago)

Voted Chloe S. because i covet that Rita Ackermann painting.

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Monday, 5 May 2025 20:34 (one month ago)

tough call but I gotta go with the Aujlas, can't beat an interior designer for um interior design

runnerup Sarah Sherman

wtf: "con artist"??

I understand why TVs are meticulously cropped out of every shot, but anyone without visible books is immediately disqualified

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 5 May 2025 20:47 (one month ago)

everyone seems so sad & dejected to be in their own living room. narrowing it down to non-frowning book owners I guess I'm split btw Sevigny and Laila Gohar.

Voting Sarah Sherman as I have the exact same sheet of Wacky Packages, framed in my living room as well.

henry s, Monday, 5 May 2025 20:56 (one month ago)

I'm a disgusting savage then

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 5 May 2025 20:56 (one month ago)

more than half of these are really self-conscious / showy or exhibit exhausting taste especially for a living room, which begs the question what is a living room for, and surely these are filling different functions for the owners.

my personal favs are:

colson whitehead's actually looks inviting and private.
i have a soft spot for steinhem's. the bric-a-brac is beautiful. lovely colors. idk it just feels really pretty to me in a pure sort of way.
aoc's is very aoc and good i think.
i like ratajkowski's, strong taste statements but still lived-in

the ones with minimal or unstructured furniture are exhausting for me in a different direction - furniture is good.

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Monday, 5 May 2025 21:05 (one month ago)

spike lee's feels like a barnes and noble.
the investor's sucks obviously, so does agnes gund's - how a room with so much tony modern art in it can feel so depressing idk, it's surely an achievement.

i assumed grandchild prison. but as a man with an 11-month-old whose living room is basically a play gym, i would think that.

many of these folks are surely rich enough to have a fancy "living room" for entertaining and a separate "family room" for actually hanging out

gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Monday, 5 May 2025 21:23 (one month ago)

which would also explain lack of tvs

gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Monday, 5 May 2025 21:24 (one month ago)

Gravitated towards comfort: Sarah Sherman, Colson Whitehead, AOC. I could relax there.

Resident Neutral (WmC), Monday, 5 May 2025 21:27 (one month ago)

xp and for some it's obviously an extension of their work.

of the semi-private ones i like whitehead's, it's very "gentleman bachelor" in a comforting kind of way.

the williamsburg comedian, i should like that sort of thing in theory because it's the closest to my own living room experiences, but something about it feels date-rapey to me lol.

five six seven, eight nine ten, begin (map), Monday, 5 May 2025 21:31 (one month ago)

Conceptually, the Dare guy's was the most immediately appealing — a couch big enough to lie down on, and multiple stacks of books on the floor — but the couch looks uncomfortable. Whitehead's couch is much better; I could work from there. Mostly, though, looking at all of these places just reminded me that even if I had a ton of money I wouldn't want to live in New York. I'm convinced that if you showed me a full floor plan for at least half these places they'd be smaller than my apartment.

hopefully the dare guy just moved in. maybe he bought the couch for this. same vibe with the restauranteurs. you know they don't spend much time there.

the only one that repulses me on a taste level is vickie paladino's. close in spirit to my mother's get-everything-from-tj-maxx ethos. some of these people are so monstrously rich i can't detect anything else going on.

Most relatable/can actually imagine having that living room: AOC and Laila Gohar/Ignacio Mattos
Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, I like it edition: Chloe Sevigny, Gus Wenner/Elle Fanning, Agnes Gund
Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, I hate it edition: Scorsese, Soros/Abedin

Voted for: Whitehead (honorable mention to the restaurateurs, that room looks cozy as hell but yeah not particularly lived in)

henry s, Thursday, 8 May 2025 18:31 (one month ago)

I think part of why I like Chloe Sevigny’s is that it shares elements with my own living room: low furniture, red
couch, un-hung artwork

Josefa, Thursday, 8 May 2025 22:49 (one month ago)

Maybe we should run a "livingrooms of ILX" thread haha.

henry your living room rules, nicer than many of the tasteless megamillionaires in this list

Emhoff’s giant stack of books annoys me - like clearly you’re never going to pull out that Murakami book (the only one i can identify) because your Jenga tower would collapse!

Also i want higher res pictures so i can better judge Emhoff and Sherman and Dare guy’s taste in books. I do like the vibe of Sherman’s place though.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 9 May 2025 01:04 (one month ago)

The painting in my house is more than 11 feet wide and is 8 feet tall! Fortunately it is composed of two canvases that are bolted together. If you look closely there is a seam down the middle, so it was easy to get into the house.

Dan S, Friday, 9 May 2025 02:14 (one month ago)
