Apparently "middle of the road" = he's done some rhetorical gay-bashing in the past and been accused of papering over sex-abuse cases. But he was close to Francis and clearly shares at least some of his foundational views, so it's not some hard right turn.

Because of those three things in the thread title, I sometimes think of "bacon" as things that appeal to a certain set of nerd-bro types who are into Reddit or (back then) The Chive. But it need not be restricted to that particular subculture.

Daniel's definition is pretty good. There's also sort of a "jump the shark" aspect to it: Baconing happens when so many people think they're being cool or clever by being into a particular thing that it starts to become cringe. Once that thing makes it onto t-shirts and greeting cards, it's bacon.
