Apparently "middle of the road" = he's done some rhetorical gay-bashing in the past and been accused of papering over sex-abuse cases. But he was close to Francis and clearly shares at least some of his foundational views, so it's not some hard right turn.

It's standard Fox News stuff, but it seems notable to me that the pope's brother has shared racist and sexist memes about the Obamas and Kamala Harris, for instance. My mom was very Fox News when she moved full-time to her condo on the Gulf coast, but she ultimately sold up and moved back to Minnesota because she said she saw far too many white snowbirds being horrible/racist (including slurs out loud) to people in service industries.

My brother and his family couldn't get out of Florida fast enough when their teenager came out as a non-binary bisexual. My dad's cousin and his family who also live in Florida (originally from Alabama) have always been openly anti-Hispanic and somehow Florida seems their natural home to just sit hating their surroundings and finding people to agree despite, y'know, the entire history of Florida. And, indeed, of Alabama. Except the cool cousin who upped sticks again from Florida and moved to Mexico.

xps A close friend has family who moved from the Carolinas to Florida. The ones who moved there first are good people and AFAIK still are. Their parents moved in with them when age-related problems for both got really bad and I can confirm they were horrible chuds long before that.

Because of those three things in the thread title, I sometimes think of "bacon" as things that appeal to a certain set of nerd-bro types who are into Reddit or (back then) The Chive. But it need not be restricted to that particular subculture.

Daniel's definition is pretty good. There's also sort of a "jump the shark" aspect to it: Baconing happens when so many people think they're being cool or clever by being into a particular thing that it starts to become cringe. Once that thing makes it onto t-shirts and greeting cards, it's bacon.
