Dunno if this will be anyone besides me and xyzz but hey.
BFI Film On Film Festival starting soon. I'm seeing a bunch of things, including a nitrate print of Un Chien Andalou from the 1920's (!), which may catch fire so if the BFI burns down you'll know what's happened.

The Barbican queer 70's strand has some very interesting stuff, including India's first queer film and Isao Fujisawa's Godard influenced Bye Bye Love.

Once saw a screening of Rivette's Paris Nous Appartient at the Barbican cinema, back when it was an extremely rare and hard to see film in the UK, and the print of that caught fire right at the end of the film. It was a real 'end of cinema' moment.
Anyway, as a regional cineaste I will follow this thread to see what scraps turn up at the GFT.

Just in time for the consensus to turn against that franchise!
― a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 28 May 2025 08:39 (seven months ago)
Do they actually have a programme for this or do you have to visit half a dozen web pages to find out what's on and when?
― Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 May 2025 08:49 (seven months ago)
Yeah Nickel looks great (apart from the Polanski screening..)
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 08:50 (seven months ago)
chronological film listing is all on that link - one film/double bill per night, open wednesday through saturday from next month
― Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Wednesday, 28 May 2025 08:51 (seven months ago)
Yeah, I was talking about the BFI thing.
― Blake the Messenger (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 May 2025 08:54 (seven months ago)
Its a bit harder for BFI to do a straight chronological listing as they have about a dozen screenings every day across four screens, but I know what you mean..
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 28 May 2025 08:56 (seven months ago)
There's a programme, just have to saunter to the Southbank to pick one up.
― a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 28 May 2025 09:23 (seven months ago)
will be out of town for film on film, was looking forward to catching 'westward the women'. experimenta offerings this time round very disappointing. you'd think the nitrate of un chien andalou playing would stop them playing it a second time. thought there would have been some kind of le grice programme. more excitingly, there's a 16mm 'chelsea girls' screening in the bfs programme for late june that till hasn't been properly confirmed.
don't make it to the Southbank much anymore tbh as the ica has been so reliable.

would indeed be nice if BFI website did have an easily scrollable/page turnable digital copy of the paper programme.

Mondongo was amazing, attended the last screening of it yesterday. Never saw La Flor..

Was hoping to catch something at the BFI tomorrow but the website says it's closed for a "private event". Naturally, the website doesn't say what the event is. Just out of curiosity, is there any way of finding out what's going on there tomorrow, short of actually going there?
― bored by endless ecstasy (anagram), Monday, 30 June 2025 10:14 (six months ago)
Third parties can hire the BFI as a venue, so I'm guessing the answer is no. You might very well not find out even if you went there.

It was v good, particularly the latter.

And Daniel, this is the De Oliveira I was telling you about:

Wang Bing's Youth screening week after next but I am not about :-(
That was my least favourite book to study in high school - thought it was just overcooked sentimental tripe at the time - but would be interesting to see what Oliveira does with it.
Btw J Rosenbaum writes about it in the current Sight & Sound as part of their third "best films you've never heard of" special.
― a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 6 August 2025 07:39 (four months ago)
Yeah it's really to do with what he is doing with the material. De Oliveira should get some sort of retro over here some day.

Fighting Spirit festival in Stratford again this weekend. I'm catching Super Courier, a tribute to Hong Kong action from Kazakhstan.
LFF programme out, not too much that's exciting me but would like to flag up a restoration of Mortu Nega, the first film produced by Guinea Bissau, detailing the independence movement.
― a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 12 September 2025 10:56 (three months ago)
I have never been to LFF (me and booking things is lol). That looks good.
― xyzzzz__, Friday, 12 September 2025 12:52 (three months ago)
As for the Daney week @ ICA I saw Pialat's film on Van Gogh. There was a talk given by an academic, which is probably necessary and yet it was the usual fairly boring affair.
