It feels like I've spent a significant part of my life in an ebbing and flowing state of embarrassment. Maybe the first time I remember experiencing this state of extreme self-consciousness was in infant school, aged 5, when my mum sent me to school in bermuda shorts and open-toed sandals. Of course nowadays I wouldn't blink if I saw someone wearing this, but at the time I knew deep down that the other kids would find it unusual and probably make fun of me. They did. Then life happened in a similar fashion from then on.
