Search (songs) Isle of Islay, Get thy Bearings, Hi its been a long time, Colours, Wear your love like heaven, Ferris Wheel, Barabajagal, As I recall it.
Destroy: Lalena, Mellow Yellow, Atlantis (the song that soundtracks Billy Batts' murder in Goodfellas), cosmic wheels (sic?), a lot of the dross on FAFTAG.
Also, how much do Momus and Stuart Murdoch owe to Donovan's lilting, fey vocal style?

Destroy:... lot of the dross on FAFTAG
I disagree, but not too strenuously.
The songs on A Gift From a Flower to a Garden are meant to be slight, a kind of nursery rhymes for adults. Some work better than others, but there's a good percentage of listenable ones. Yes, there are far too many faux-innocent songs about tinkers and gypsies, but there are many of them that succeed as lyric poetry. The flute accompaniments on the simpler arrangements are often quite charming and the imagery on the better ones, such as The Lullaby of Spring, hide their complexity behind their simplicity. You just have to listen discriminatingly to separate the lyrical wheat from the whimsical chaff. I'd say a good half of AGFAFTAG deserves a Search more than a Destroy.

I wish he'd pronounced Islay correctly though, he is supposed to be Scottish after all.

Those sides are called "For Little Ones" which suggests they are for children - though a lot of them don't sound like children's songs to me. Fuck writing songs for children anyway.

that was part of british psychedelia. Pink Floyd/Beatles/Traffic did the trippy nursery rhyme thing too.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 26 August 2017 17:48 (eight years ago)
They didn't actually write songs for children though, Donovan did it (or claimed he did it) on two albums.

It's a happy place, that's all. You know, it was just... We were trying to write a children's song. That was the basic idea. And there's nothing more to be read into it than there is in the lyrics of any children's song. „
— Paul McCartney, 1966
Paul on "Yellow Submarine". which yeah i know is kinda cheating since Donovan contributed to it. he also said the same thing about "All Together Now". "Hey Jude" was written for John's kid Julian and John wrote him "Good Night" for a lullaby.
it was definitely an influence. songs like "Matilda Mother" "See Emily Play" and "My White Bicycle" adopt that childlike view. you can hear it in some "Incredible String Band" songs. there's that Lewis Carroll influence. comparing "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" to "White Rabbit" is a good example of that US/UK divide. one is a pastoral fantasy while the other is all dramatic about post-adolescent disillusionment.

Didn’t expect the solution that he proposes at the end there. Not sure how givin him some of my love could help global warming

Though I guess subtlety has never really been Donovan’s thing.
