What's happened to Des?
He's doing Sports Mastermind, but he reads everything (questions/autocue) in a singular monotone and a blank face!
Is he all over?
― Mark G, Thursday, 17 July 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)
It is odd how Hansen was called Hanson and Lawrenson was called Lawrensen (a Scandinavian-looking formula, come to think of it) when this thread started.
It's a good question about Desmond. I haven't seen Sports Mastermind, though. I am touched somehow by the thought of him going back to the BBC, as he did for radio.
― the pinefox, Thursday, 17 July 2008 10:10 (seventeen years ago)
Des is very, very strange on Sports Mastermind. Utterly robotic.
― Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)
Exactly.
― Mark G, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)
Des was so fucking awful as a Countdown host
― The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)
It is nice to see Lynam returning to his first love, public service broadcasting, after being cruelly forced to work on ITV for huge pots of money.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:30 (seventeen years ago)
He's gone the way of Wogan
― Tom D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:30 (seventeen years ago)
Wogan, Lynam, Motson, Westwood: fuck a media personality being "in on the joke" of why they were popular in the first place.
― The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago)
Des for DeadPool 2009.
― Upt0eleven, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know, but does that mean you think he's going to die next year? If so, that sounds a very unkind thing to say, about a figure many of us like.
I don't know your Westwood, but I would always prefer a Lynam in or out of his joke to most other broadcasters.
― the pinefox, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:36 (seventeen years ago)
I would count myself most definitely amongst "many of us", but still think he's looking a bit doddering and senile and would therefore not be a bad bet. if one were to partake in that kind of thing.
― Upt0eleven, Thursday, 17 July 2008 11:38 (seventeen years ago)
I think you might be alarmed by the Lynam on display in Sports Mastermind, PF. Perhaps he's just settling into the format and he'll get better but something seems wrong.
― Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)
yes i was puzzled by this too. Lynam sounds like had a stroke recently or was really really ill in some other way. he's been replaced by a robot clone, and his tone was a lot higher and more urgent. strange.

― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)
Well, if he had had a stroke, he woudn't rattle off the questions and/or the autocue like he did.
I didn't see the 'between rounds' chat that othernewsbloke does on the 'real' mastermind, so maybe that came over more 'natural' I don't know.
― Mark G, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:36 (seventeen years ago)
It would be hard to be less natural than John "So You're Interested in this Subject That You Just Answered Questions On for 2 Minutes Are You?" Humphrys.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)
so, was he?
― Mark G, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)
(I did mean "more natural than Des' reading of the questions I've started so I'll finish out)
― Mark G, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:39 (seventeen years ago)
hm, is any of this New Old Des available online? I must look.
― the pinefox, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)
xxxpost
Look at those fingernails, no way does he make his own shoes.
― Billy Dods, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)
My husband also wondered if Des had had a stroke, I thought he just had a bad cold and an aversion to the style of Mastermind (he was also terrible on Countdown). Whatever, he is not a very watchable host. I was quite tickled to hear a reference to Half Man Half Biscuit on Sports Mastermind the other night though.
― ailsa, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)
Sport Mastermind: 2008: Episode 1 is no longer available. Programmes are available for a limited number of days after broadcast. Why?
Why, oh, lord, WHY???

WTF Des, you're supposed to be a professional, you can't get all huffy and sulky because you don't like the format or whatever. He's no Michael Aspel that's for sure!
― Tom D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)
Bruce Forsythe disagrees with you.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 17 July 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)
Not huffy or sulky, Tom D, just kinda upsettingly old and feeble.
― Michael Jones, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)
Forsythe is a proper entertainer tho
― blueski, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

watching it on TV is cheap.

― The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)
You've heard of public courses?
it's true that you can toddle off the the local par-three course, rent a few clubs for a tenner or less, and have an enjoyable hackaround, but you can't get good at golf without serious financial outlay AFAICT
― Just got offed, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)
You can get talent spotted and taken up and sponsored by your local club
― Tom D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)
It is no doubt different in Scotland tho, I imagine there are more and better public courses and no notion of it being an exclusive sport
― Tom D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)
But to own clubs in the first place speaks of having a certain financial stability...they're a luxury, at least until you can put them to good use. I guess you've got a point, but it's not a game anyone from any background can just take up at a moment's notice.
Yeah, it probably is very different in Scotland.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:46 (seventeen years ago)
But to own clubs in the first place speaks of having a certain financial stability
So does owning turntables or a decent guitar and amp set-up.
― The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)
True, although I'd imagine if someone showed a bit of aptitude on a mini-amp, that would be the time to channel resources towards obtaining a better set-up. A good friend of mine is a guitar whizz from a deprived background, and he now spends most of his wages on musical equipment. I don't know how expensive turntables are so I can't really comment.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)
People save up! As I remember it, people just cobbled together as many clubs as they could, from whatever sources they could, and just battered round the local course - there was one just up the road from me
― Tom D., Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:52 (seventeen years ago)
That's probably a cultural pastime in Scotland, as you said, Tom. It isn't remotely like that in London, or even in the rest of England, as far as I know. The golfers here are generally the ones whose daddy takes them to the club.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
Cricket is becoming the bloody rich man's sport here mind with the prices of attending international matches. Bloody ludicrous. I've only EVER been to 5th days of Tests, never anything else. Isn't worth it.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)
We got to play golf in PE in my (very poor and small) high school where I'm from in Fife. Then again that's Fife, where there's at least one municipal course in every major town.
― treefell, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)
Golf as a recreational activity may be a middle class pasttime, but as a sport its nowhere near.
― The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 17 July 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)
I guess John Daly stands as a prime example. As does Ian Poulter. Oh wait no, he's just an Arsenal-supporting North London wideboy like Phil Tufnell.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 17 July 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)
Des L. grew into the Countdown role after a slow start! Or maybe I'm just nostalgic for the days of anything-but-O'Connor.
Hacking balls around a park with the single iron you own is a pretty common pastime for west of Scotland teenagers. I guess that, as Tom D. says, by the time they're grown-ups they've managed to cobble together something resembling a whole set of clubs.
